Title: Ideas on finding Information re Football Association in early 1900s
Post by: deeiluka on Sunday 18 March 07 05:51 GMT (UK)
This is just a long shot, but last night I was given an envelope containing photogaphs, postcards of instructions, and a Middlesex County Football Association Junior badge from a jumper that belonged to my grandfather. I have had his football medals for some time but did not know where he had played - just that he had been quite a good young football player. One of the postcards invites him to play for the Middlesex County team.

I'd love to find out more about the competition in the early 1900s if it is possible.

I have found and read http://www.middlesexfa.com/history.htm
but I don't seem to be able to find anything else online that is of help.

Does anyone have any ideas on if such information is available - and if so, where I could access it.

It's a long shot, Dee, but you could try wading through this - http://www.uknetguide.co.uk/Sports/Football/.  I found some interesting sites on this, but some time ago.  Might be worth a try (I assume you have already google'd  :))

Hi Dee

Try http://www.nationalfootballmuseum.com

In the contact section they have an email address for research, and they hold records for Football Association members from 1880's

Hi Dee,

I noticed this link posted by Gadget a few months ago, to be honest I haven't had a good look through it, but it might be of some help.

Thanks all - I shall have a look at all of those a little later. Much appreciated. (Yes, Julian - I had googled and found the web page of the Middlesex County Football Association and read their history page, but didn't seem to be able to find much more.)

Dragging this thread back out to ask another question, as I'm trying to put together some information for my youngest grandson about his gg-grandfather's football memorabilia.......

One of my grandfather's medals has Lynn Borough on it. I've tried googling it, but all I get is Kings Lynn and then further along the word Borough.

My grandfather grew up and lived in Kings Lynn until he left home as a young man after his mother died, and I suspect this medal is something to do with Kings Lynn....but I can't find anything to confirm that.

Any one know the answer for me please?

It's the medal on the right that has Lynn Borough on it.....

Dee

I take it his name is William Steeles  ???

What is his D.O.B and when did he move from Kings Lynn to Middlesex  ???

Are there any dates on the medals  ???
Title: Re: Ideas on finding Information re Football Association in early 1900s
Post by: deeiluka on Thursday 27 November 08 11:26 GMT (UK)
Yes, Simon....William Gordon Steeles born 28th July 1885 at Marham near Kings Lynn.

I don't know exactly when he moved away from home, but his mother died in 1904 and I have a feeling it was fairly soon after that.

The Lynn Borough Medal has 1904-1905 on it.

The Middlesex County FA medal has Midweek Cup 1908 - 1909 on the back of it.

The other medal has no writing on it at all.

I think Simon's the best bet - he's got a Football Museum on his doorstep  :)

Thanks for trying, Gadget.  :D

I put this aside and have just got it out again, as my 14 year old grandson has just been asked to play under 16s with one of the State Federation Cup teams. He's a kid who needs all the positive reinforcement he can get......so am hoping to encourage him to put all his effort into it.

There's another photograph with trophies with Swifts 1906-1907 on it.

Aaaaha....thankyou Simon.

I have these little postcards that were sent to Will by the Middlesex Association......telling him he'd been selected to play and giving him instructions. Interesting they are.......

He didn't go on with football though....he married in 1911 and came out to South Oz.

Everything seems to be in the years between 1904 and 1909.......

Was your Grandfather a Coach Builder like his father  ???
Title: Re: Ideas on finding Information re Football Association in early 1900s
Post by: deeiluka on Thursday 27 November 08 12:09 GMT (UK)
No.....but as a hobby he painted the coats of arms that used to be on the sides of coaches.

He was a painter and decorator in Oz.

All three sons came to Australia.....their father the coach builder teamed up with a woman after their mother died and none of the sons wanted anything to do with her.  :-\

Roxeth is now a part of Harrow on the Hill, London

The earlier team was called Lynn Swifts, they were one of the best local teams in the area at the time.

The medal with Lynn Borough inscribed was the league winners medal for that season

Hopefully more to follow  :) :)

Sorry, the Lynn Borough medal was awarded to the winners of Lynn Borough Junior Cup 1904-05.

The Lynn Swifts FC were formed in 1896 and is one of the oldest junior clubs in Norfolk.  They were the junior section of Lynn Town FC.

It sounds like they won everything in the area at the time.  In 1906/7 and 1907/8 seasons they won the League with maximum points.

What we need now is someone to pop into Kings Lynn and Harrow libraries and look at the sports sections of the local papers.

I'm not sure how close Ricky lives to Kings Lynn  ??? ???

Just wondering about a way for your father to 'see' some of the photos. Dee  :-\

If I were to select  the ones of your grandfather and the cups  and just put those up - would you be able to print them out/cut around them and stick just those on paper. He'd be able to feel the edges and get some idea of them.

What I'll do is enlarge them to a decent size and then send them to you as individual elements. The detail might be a bit pixellated but he will be able to touch the edges  :)

OK - send me the larger file(s)  - think you have my e-mail.

Very interesting times 1890s-1920s in Football. The problem is that most of the info is on League Clubs only. For the other sides we mostly have to rely on some dedicated fan collecting everything at a local level.

What a great find, dee.
I just hope the names are well placed, not like the one that turned up for restoration with the names all round the edge and lines across the photo pointing to the person...the thought was there.... :-\

I think the names are underneath, Paula....fingers crossed that they are anyway.......

What a treasure.....evidently after my aunt got the CD she went and sorted through some stuff she'd collected after Will's eldest son died last year......and the photos were amongst it.  :D  :D  :D
