Hi.
Is any one reseaching the McClelland family??
I think my grandmother Ellen Jane was McClelland was born c 1890 ??Co Down.
All I know from her marriage certificate her father was called David.
Thanks Jean.

There are four McClelland family trees for Co Down all in Volume 1 with starting page numbers as follows in 1p8 Banbridge, 1p20 Lisnaree, 1p22 Baron, 1p24 Alexander, This volume is in Blackwood Family history manuscript trees in the LinenHall library, Belfast. Its easiest to visit, however no harm enquiring.
I suggest you ask them for photocopying estimates if they think your knowledge relevant and be prepared to pay the extra for post and packing. However if the material is really relevant when you get it, I suggest a further donation to this unique library that is always needing extra funds. Linen Hall Library,17 Donegall Square North, Belfast BT15GB, Northern Ireland, Telephone: +44 (0)28 9032 1707, Fax: +44 (0)28 9043 8586, Email:info[at]linenhall.com
Have you also looked at Ros Davies website ie freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/
Have you also looked at www.familysearch.com
There will be many more sources.
Also try the Presbyterian Historical Society by letter, as one of their past librarians was an Aiken McClelland who was very interested in genealogy.
Hope this starts you. Jim

I didnt include Ulster Historical Society who has Birth Record MCCLELLAND ELLEN JANE 1898 Co down. Hope that is good news but there is a fee to pay system. Off on other interests, Jim
-
Hi Jim.
Thanks for all help.
I have the Ulster Historical Society birth record for Ellen Jane McClelland born 1898.It gives her father as John a tailor.
I think this Ellen is too young to be my grandmother as when she married in 1918 Selling Kent England it gives her age as 29 and when she died 1954 Strood Kent she was 64.
She lived with us in Strood for 3 years before her death but I was only 5 at the time.
I live in Perth Australia now so not easy to visit Belfast!!
Jean.

Thankyou but I do have that information.
I have my grandparents marriage certificate and I know when they both died!

So who was your grandmother's father and his occupation on the 1918 marriage certificate?
-
Her father had died and it didn’t say.
My grandfather was still in the army!
-
Sorry he was David McClelland.

Sorry he was David McClelland.
So, you may have this, but for others who may read this thread on the internet, the years 1882-1895 were searched and this was the only birth record for an Ellen Jane with father David.
Ellen Jane McClelland born 23 July 1886 at George's Street, Derry. Father David McClelland, a postman. Mother Sarah Heaney.

Yes this is the information I have now but there is alittle confusion as David wife was a Mary Ann nee Heaney with a sister Sarah!
-
I did some more research and Sarah was only 14 at the time of my grandmother’s birth!
I wonder if she was the mother and her sister and brother in law looked after the baby or there was a mix up when the baby was registered!
-
....or there was a mix up when the baby was registered!
The informant was an A Lumsden (of Orchard Row) who might have confused the first name of the mother - Sarah rather than Mary Ann. Agnes Lumsden was a nurse (ladies).

Thankyou so much for your help.
I can’t find a connection to anyone from Scotland but I have 23% Scottish DNA on my mother’s side.
But Agnes Lumsden was born in Scotland!
I only know my mother said her middle name was from her mother’s aunt Jean who lived in Scotland!
Only 4% Irish DNA!
Thankyou again.
Happy New Year from Perth Australia.

Hi I've got James McClelland from county Tyrone Ireland his family also from Scotland Kirkcudbright Scotland
Any dates to go with this?
-
Hi Robert mccelland born in 1633 from Kirkcudbright Scotland my James McClelland from county Tyrone Ireland born 1770 his dad was Andrew
-
Hi Dale John.
Have you found any connection to my McCelland family?
As I said my family must have come from Scotland to Ireland but yet to find who did!
-
Hi not sure yet I've only name like James McClelland and Andrew McClelland and Alexander McClelland all from Ireland and James McClelland 1770 from county Tyrone
-
Hey folks, hopefully some of you will see this. Any of you have any McClellands male relatives that could take a Y dna test? I've taken one and my family are from Newry county Down where i still live today. I've traced back to the early 1800s thanks to some people here but to get beyond that> YDNA will be the biggest clue.
essentially if you test a male Y heir and they match with me then you know for certain we are related. I did have a YDNA match with the surname McLellan and ftdna predicts we shared a common ancestor in 1760 so im just missing one or two generations.

I’m also researching the McClelland family, from County Down.
I’ve come to a bit of a dead end on this side unfortunately for now, only going back as far as John J McClelland (1915-1997) who married Susanna Kearney (1915-1994).
I have Thomas McClelland down as a potential father for John but no other information on this side unfortunately.
-
Hey Jasmine,
I haven’t come across any Thomas McClelland.
I’d suggest if possible to get a Y dna test done on that side of the family if you have any possible candidates. There is around 400 mcclelland testers on familytreedna who have taken tests so you’d very likely get grouped and at least know or have an idea on how to proceed with far out relations to contact etc. it would narrow it down / takes out part of the guesswork.

There's a birth for John Joseph McLelland in 1915 Newcastle, Co. Down- parents Thomas McLelland & Susan Murphy-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1915/01382/1568381.pdf
Thomas McClelland & Susan Murphy married in 1902-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1902/10289/5745114.pdf
By 1911 there are 3 children-
https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Newcastle/King_Street/243438/
You can search the Irish Genealogy site for other children (up to 1921) and GRONI (index only up to births 100 years or more).
John J. McClelland's marriage certificate should list father's name and occupation as well as where the groom was residing at the time.

There may not have been a marriage (marriage wasn't in N.I, Ireland, Scotland or England/Wales), alternatively names are incorrect.
This seems to be Jasmine's tree with a birth image uploaded for John (same one Aghadowey mentioned) but few supporting sources for the McClelland's
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/185559560/person/142430446674
another is https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/3226533/person/112630093479
Seems to be tracing back from the birth of Patricia McClelland Birth 13 Mar 1944 Northern Ireland death 28 Nov 1989 England. Death Bath area.
The starting point should really be Patricia's birth cert from GRONI to confirm father and her mother's forname and maiden surname.
If desired, & suspect Patricia married in N.I. her marriage cert (with locations & father's details) would also be available from GRONI. Both are obviously within the no access from home cut-offs so require a £15 paper cert if a personal visit to their research room is impractical. If details are uncertain for online form filling phone them and discuss as will do a 5 year search and email before generating the cert.

..John J McClelland (1915-1997) who married Susanna Kearney (1915-1994).
There's a Susanna Bernadette Kearney born January 1916 at Ballyvange, Downpatrick. Daughter of James Kearney and Margaret (nee Rice).
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1916/01355/1558959.pdf
Parent's marriage - 4 August 1901 at Ballykilbeg RC Church.

There's a Susanna Bernadette Kearney born January 1916.
Jasmine has both those in her tree linked above, but as I indicated no GRONI marriage index entry for Sus* Kearney to McClelland pre-1950 and daughter Patricia McClelland was born 13 Mar 1944 (N.I.) according to her 1989 English Death Index entry + one or two other siblings also born pre-1950.
If Jasmine responds and updates with info from Patricia's birth cert then we can look further, no point barking further up the wrong tree.
Susannah B Kearney has attached a death/burial of a Susan Kearney 1994 in Carlow!
