This is my last resource to find out my Greatgreatgrandfather Michael McElligott military Id, a gunner in the Royal Artillery in Woolwich in 1873.
This info would help me to complete my family tree. Could someone be able to locate this info for me as it is impossible to go to KEW since I am from Canada.
Thanking you in advance and this is the greatest web for genealogy research.

This National Archives at Kew website might help.
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/
I tried the site & entered Michael McElligott in the advanced search slot, LH side of screen, they have a medal record for a Michael McElligott, WW1 Private, Royal Munster Fusiliers, Regiment no 9596 in docs WO372/12.

Meliora,
Unfortunately Michael immigrated in Canada via New York in 1887. So this would not be my Michael in WW1.
Thanks anyway I know eventually we will find the wright Michael.

Hi Meliora,
I have 2 military ID for Michael McElligott who served from october 15th, 1855 to may 14th, 1879
23790 and 4330 (from the discharged documents)
I have the discharged documents. Is there any other documents / info I can get with these ID?
Thanks for helping

Hello, Alan,
Did you obtain the discharge papers from the National Archives at Kew ? If so, the attestation (joining up) papers are usually attached.
As you have the discharge doc numbers, try an enquiry at the Nat Arch. quoting these numbers, asking for the attestation papers, these usually give details given on enlisting, plus a personal description.
Good luck,
Meliora

Was Michael born in England and also what was his year of birth?
:D
-
No,
Michael McElligott was born in Ballylongford, Ireland in 1833 or 1836. He got married in Alderney on april 21st, 1861 with Mary Leahy. He enter the royal artillery gunners on october 16th, 1855 in Woolwich, England.
Thanks

Have you found the family in any census at all?
-
Yes but nothing before the 1871 census as he was in Woolwich. I am trying to get info prior to the 1871 census. I assume that they should be in the 1861 census in Alderney along with Mary (Leahy) McElligott, his wife and their witnesses Robert Brasil and Mary-Ann Brasil.
Thanks
Alain

1861 not much help I'm afraid. Mary Leahy aged 21yrs, born In Ireland and working as a housemaid on Alderney.
::) ::)
-
Since they were based in Alderney would there be a special census for military people?
Also any trace of the Brasil or Leahy in that census?
Thanks
Alain

Mary is the only Leahy in Alderney in 1861 (as above). No sign of any Brasils (spell var) in the Channel Islands, and no sign of Michael anywhere.
I don't think there would have been a special census for the military. If he was in barracks he would be named there, but as yet can't see him.
