Hi, I wonder if someone could help me please???
I am looking for confirmation of a marriage between Alfred Merrall and Daisy Gouge 1916, Cowra, NSW and if they had any children?
Many thanks.

Hi FEK33 :)
you can search NSW BDMs online at
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm
For free!
Marriages go up to 1956 online, but births have a 100 year closure rule so only up to 1906 is recorded online. However, some Rootschatters do have access to later births (I think) so you might get lucky.

Many thanks for your help.
Is there any way of finding out if Alfred is buried in Cowra please?
I am pretty new to researching overseas and any help would be appreciated ???
Many thanks. FE33 :D

Hi FE33,
Cowra is a fair distance from Sydney (even further back then, time wise) - it's unlikely, but not impossible, that Alfred would be buried there.
If you order a copy of the death certificate for Alfred, it will tell you where he was buried. Australian certificates are fantastic like that!
Cheers

Hi Prue, thanks for that. I will order a copy.
I didn't realise that the certificate would tell me where he was buried.
Thanks again. FEK33 :D

The very early ones don't have alot of info, but the latter 1800s and particularly the 20th century death certs do give quite a bit of information. If you are lucky, and the informant was in the know, the cert might give you spouse names, children's ages and names, number of years in the colony (if an immigrant)...of course if they didn't know or weren't sure, you might end up on a wild goose chase! One thing that is almost always correct is the place and date of burial/cremation and who it was performed by (ie. undertakers if any, ministers if any etc.).
Good luck! :D

Hi, firstly I would like to thank you all for helping me out.
I have this morning received a NSW Death Registration Transcription for Alfred Merrall, which confirms that he was buried in the Church of England Cemetery, Rookwood.
What I am confused about is that it states he was not married. According to the BMD's, he may have married a Daisy Gouge, but she did not die until 1966. If they had divorced, would the death certificate say he wasn't married? Also it doesn't list any children and according to the BDM's he may have had a daughter called Nancy with Daisy. ???
Another thing I am confused about is that on the death transcription it says time in Aust Colonies, 18 years in NSW (which would have been 1925), but if he did marry Daisy Gouge, that would have been in 1916!! and his daughter born in 1917! ???
I am sure this is my Alfred Merrall I am looking for as his parents were John Thomas Merrall and Emma Tomkins and he was born in Leicester, England, which is what it states on the Death Registration.
What is my next step please? Do I order a transcript of the marriage?
Thanks FEK33

Hi FEK33,
Glad the certificate arrived and you now have a place of burial - Rookwood is a really enormous cemetery and there is a published CD of transcriptions of headstones available...some Rootschatters own this, so it might be interesting to start a new thread with a request to see if your man had a headstone which was transcribed.
I'm not sure, but I would have thought that the death certificate would state any spouses, whether living, dead or divorced (certainly they always stated the former two) and any children living or dead. Who was the informant on the death certificate? It might be that they were not privy to any of this information, and only gave what info they knew. If he was divorced/estranged, the informant might have had no knowledge of his former family. The only sure way to find out might be to order that marriage certificate.

Thanks Prue,
The informant was a G Loughrey, Assistant Manager Lidcombe State Hospital & Home (where Alfred died). Like you say he probably didn't know anything about Alf's family.
I will post a new thread to see if he had a gravestone.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Fek33,
On my Rookwood cemetery CD there is no Merrall at all there sorry may be some one eles can look on there CD for you to Fek33
-
Thanks OzyBob,
I have posted a separate thread asking for a look up. If no joy there, I have just read another post which gives the email address for Rookwood, so I may email them for the information.
I have also sent a reply to someone asking them to photograph his grave if they see it on their visit. It would be nice to find out the location of the grave for them.
Thanks again.

hello there
just a question or two for you
what does the death certificate say as cause of death please
also when was he born?
regards jenn
-
hello there
I find it a bit odd that gordon alexander merrall is also listed as gouge-merrall on his death details on the nsw bdm's
so had a little look around
and by the bdm's Daisy was married prior to alfred merrall
she was Daisy Doig when she married Raymond G Gouge in 1908 reference no 4572
he died in 1909
so it is possible that there could be children to this union as well
Maybe alfred divordced Daisy?
regards Jenn

Greetings,

Looks like poor Nancy died young.

Thank you - you are all very kind and helpful. ;D
Jenn, his cause of death was chronic myocarditis. He was born in Leicester, England - 1884, Jan quarter, Leicester 7a 202.
Eds - any information about Alfred, Daisy and/or children would be great, thanks.
Debbie - that would explain why no children listed. Would I have to order a transcription to find out where Nancy would be buried or would there be cemetery near Waverley?
Thanks again.
Regards FEK33

Hi Fek33,
There is a major cemetery at Waverley. Has fantastic views over the ocean.
The website is here: http://www.waverley.nsw.gov.au/cemetery/, however they don't seem to have a database of burials on it.

Hi Debbie,
Thanks for the information re Waverley Cemetery. I have emailed them today asking if Nancy is buried there.
Thanks again. :)

Hi, I have today heard from Waverley Cemetery. Whilst they do charge for carrying out a search for grave locations, they did actually confirm the following for me :
"A quick check of the records shows a listing for a N M Merrall (aged 8 days) interred in a common grave 5 December 1917. Common graves were used for multiple interments of infants or for destitute burials. Common graves are unmarked and can not have any memorial stone placed on the site". :(
So I think my next step is to order the transcription of the marriage certificate to confirm it was definately my Alfred who married Daisy Gouge / Doig.
I would also like to confirm when Alfred Merrall arrived in Australia and who he travelled with, as there is still the conflicting information on his death transcription, saying 'time in Aust Colonies, 18 years in NSW (which would have been 1925), but if he did marry Daisy Gouge, that would have been in 1916!! and his daughter born in 1917! ???
Can anyone please give me advice on where I could find out this information? Unfortunately I have no idea when he would arrived in Australia or on what ship, etc. All I know is that he is shown on the 1901 Leicester Census, England.
Thanks.
