I am currently researching 2 sets of Massey families. One from Alstonfield which I have going back to the 1700's and the other from Norbury. What is interesting me is that both these families keep using the name Bartholomew throughout the generations does this name crop up in your Ipstones family Anna??

My Norbury Massey family have lovely names like Sense and Brey (girls names) that run through them.

I know this is a shot in the dark but I've searched on the internet till my fingers are raw and I have to wait till I can get over to Staffordshire next year to search the parish records.

All the best

Eyyupp Anna,
my family, CORDEN/cordon/cordan/cawden, originate in Ipstones, (Cordon in your footnotes).
I have a note of a Sarah Massey, m. Robert Massey, Lichfield Cath. 11/2/1751.
Mentioned in Will of Uriah Corden, d. Ashbourne, 1793,  also was legatee in Will of Jeremiah Corden.
(Believed sister of Uriah, rel. to Jeremiah not known.
(Not my research, so cannot help further.

Hello Beechbaby, welcome to the club.
I can't recall the name Natrass in my tree, but a lot of the research was a gift, so I'll trawl through it and see what surfaces

good luck,

There's a lot of 'silvers' about!  Don't worry about posting, plenty of people will read it, and the help will flow, as I've already found.

  This to Ango

Hello Anjo,
I am also looking at the Norbury Masseys.  I am interested in Sense's family.  Sense, bpt 1741, married William Orpe, an itinerant Methodist preacher, in 1767.  Online, there are some letters between William Orpe and John Wesley, in which they discuss William getting married.  He left Methodism when he married Sense, though he returned to preaching those beliefs in his later years.  I'm wondering if he rejected Methodism in order to marry Sense, who was not of the same faith. Methodists were not supposed to marry out.  Are you aware of any non-conformity in the Massey family in the mid 18th century?
Carolyn

In answer to your question regarding the religious outlook of the Massey family I would suggest a look at some of Sense's relations. Her grandfather John Massey was at the top of a line that moved from Norbury to Swarkestone and then on to Dunmow and Vange in Essex, where some of the family were quite prominent in the Quaker community. Also there was a movement of Masseys from around the Wirral and Cheshire through Derbyshire and on to Ely, and then to Tilbury in the new world, indicating some form of religious dissention.

My interest, though, is tying John Massey (b.1671 in Norbury, d.1740 Swarkestone) into the rest of the Massey family. Once that is done I can start going out sideways along the branches of the family. As it is I have a direct line back to John.

My direct ancestors are Masseys from Alstonefield/Ilam in Staffordshire. Recently through wills held by Lichfield Diocese I made the connection to the Masseys of Norbury/Swarkestone. The wills are available through FindMyPast. (Bartholomew Massey died 1771 mentions his brother John of Roston and brother-in-law William Marten of Hilton)

I have traced my 4th cousin 4 times removed as Ada Cecile Granville Wright a prominent suffragette. Her mother was Sarah Jane Massey born in Swarkestone.

Would be interested in seeing how the Masseys of Ipstones tie in.

Hi Anna
I think my great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother was Anna Massey. She married Thomas Slack in Ipstones in 1708. Thomas was born in 1680. I don't have Anna's birth year, but I think she died in Ipstones in 1756.
Please let me know if this ties in with any of your ancestors.

I think my GGGGGGM Anna Massey may have been born in Ipstones in 1687 (baptised 1 May). Her parents were Roberti and Annae Massey.

Hi,
I see that this is quite an old post, but having only just found it, I wonder if anyone is still connected.
John Massey 1671, Norbury and Elizabeth Hawksworth, were my 6x grandparents. I wonder whether anyone here found definitive, or even possible baptism for John?
My Dad's great grandmother was Elizabeth Massey, born Turnditch, daur of John Massey 1795 (a Schoolmaster) and Mary Ford. I have found several DNA matches with descendants of the Ford branch, but not so many for the Masseys. I am always looking for more DNA matches and would be interested to know if anyone here has a DNA test online, especially at Ancestry..
I see that there are several Sance and Sense Masseys, and suspect this is a short version of Innocence, as an Innocence Massey married William Martin 1733 in Swarkestone.
I also have Bray and Bartholomews. I have been unable to find the 1771 will on FindmyPast, though I do have a will from Bartholomew Massey of the Lee in the parish of Norbury, dated 1720.
I would be most interested to see the 1771 will.

All the Best
Phil How
p.s. I just found the 1771 will  :)

Hi there Phil,
Just seen your post and the only Sense I see who married a William Martin would have been John (1671-1741) 's daughter. One of the dead end's I have in my family tree is a John Massey, born 1738 in Norbury, who may indeed be the father of your GGGM. Which would make us some sort of cousins.
