I don't know if anyone can help here but how do I find information on someone who was a Sergeant in the 26th Regiment between the years of 1820 to 1851.
He (John Roberts) is listed as being a Sergeant in the Regiment with his oldest child being born in Corfu in 1836. I am assuming they were in Malta during that time, and my Great Grandfather listed as being born "on the Barracks" and the birth being in the district of Sunderland East, Co Durham. in 1844
I have been unable to find out how you look up someone who was serving overseas in the 1841 Census and on the 1851 - 1871 as Chelsea Out Pensioner.

Hmm,
The 26th Regt (Cameronians) were in India from 1828-1840 ???
Is this info coming from a birth certificate Lyn? The handwriting is clear? Couldn't be anything else?

Hi Neil,
Thanks for replying.
The information I have is from my GGGrandfathers birth certificate, it has stated that he was born 25th October 1844 Barracks and gives his father (John's) address at Barracks. His birth was registered in Sunderland East in the County of Durham.
I have attached a copy of his birth cert. The other information I have has been taken from Census info.

Hi Ryan
If you are only interested in his family tree you will not find much in military records. As they only recorded families, next of kin etc from c1880s.
Most surviving records are on Findmypast. These came from pension departments, (which was originally Chelsea Hospital). Before FindMyPast were given access the records were on microfilm in the National Archives. They were filed according date of discharge and the index up to 1854 is still online.Could this be him? http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C8737384
FindMyPast were given access to the original paper records and so some transcription errors were introduced compared to the microfilms. And I suspect this is what has happened here, as I cannot find his service record.
FindMyPast does have small references to John Kay.

My ancestor was also in the 26th Regiment of Foot around that time.
This history of the regiment might be helpful for you:
