Photographer's A King, wonder if it's one of my lot ;D

Suppose the syllable "king" would transliterate well into Chinese, as it's a syllable that sounds like it would fit well in the Chinese language.

Or would he have just translated the word king into the Chinese word for king, if there is one (they had emperors, but did they have kings)?

Any guesses, anybody?

Cheers,
China
BTW Mudge, no luck finding the photographer for dating, sorry

Could the photographer be "A HING" rather than King?  A chinese name, probably what the chinese characters say (not quite as exciting as "All the nice girls love a sailor"!!)

Hi Prue,

Kind of unusual to find a Chinese businessman using an initial, maybe? Didn't/don't they use a full name like Wing Wong or Ping Bao, AND, the family name comes first in Chinese anyway. Also, having perused page after page after page after page after page after....Sorry, got kind of carried away there...<ahem> as I was saying having looked at a lot of the name King in census page handwriting, I think it's "King".

China ;D ;D ;D

I only did it cos I know Mudge likes special effects, I actually thought everyone would hate it as not really in keeping with the period of the photo but it was fun!  ;D ;D ;D

Just seen this - four years late. You probably know by now that it isn't 'King', it's 'Hing'. Could mean something like 'rising' or 'elevated' or 'prosper'. Another use: Go Hing means happy.

BTW, Cantonese for 'king' is Wong (written as saam waak Wong, i.e. three horizontal strokes with a single vertical line in the middle.)

I think I've found your photographer. His full name (maybe in fact his business name) was Tung Hing.

You'll need to scroll through the link (below) a bit and look closely to find him.

I'd bet money that this is our fellow. It's a shame that most of the really talented Chinese photographers  of the period have been ignored by history. You'll read how westerners on a visit to Hong Kong and Shanghai in the 19th C. sought out these esteemed photographer guys, whose reputation carried around the world even back then. A bit like how the really great tailors of today here in Hong Kong are well-known by the cognoscenti in New York, London and so on.
The article is really worth a look all through. PM me if you can't make the link work.
