Title: Macswans from Duirnish Inverness
Post by: yorkshirerose on Sunday 04 March 07 23:31 GMT (UK)
I have a Finlay Macswan born 3rd January 1890 in Duirnish Inverness to parents Donald Macswan born 1865 in waternish Inverness and Barbara Nee: Munro born 1863 in Duirnish.
I am trying to find the death of Finlay but guessing it must have been after 1956 because I can't find him on Scotlandpeople.gov.
I also can't find a marriage for him....I know he had a son called Murdo but at the moment can't find anything on him either.
Any help would be appreciated
regards
Rose

Hi Rose

You won't find any birth records on line on SP for son Murdo, cut-off for births is currently 1906.

In respect of Finlay's marriage, there are two coming up between 1905-1931 (1931 is the cut-off for marriages on line at SP):

1. 1919   MCSWAN   FINALY   and MACKINNON   ANNIE   @ ST ROLLOX   GLASGOW CITY/LANARK   644/08 0201

2. 1908   MCSWAN   FINLAY   and MCLACHLAN   SARAH   @ MUCKAIRN   /ARGYLL   529/00 0001

I used a wildcard * for Finlay (Fin*) and as you can see No.1 is indexed as Finaly. Hopefully, if you know wife's name, one of the above will be the correct Finlay's MC.

Regards.

Monica

Thankyou Monica, will keep those 2 entries. My hubbys sister is asking an aunt about Finlay as we don't know his wife's name.

I recently moved to duirinish parish on the Isle of Skye.  If you find out which part of the parish your ancestors came from (BIIG area FEEEW people) I could go and look in cemetaries/take photos etc.

I too have an interest in MacPhies/McPhees from Duirinish.  I have Neil McPhee bc1789 who married Marion MacDonald 18 Mar 1823 Duirinish.  Neils father was Norman MacPhie (Crofter).

Still happy to check cemetaries etc as offered above but anyone with problems researching in this area I recommend you looks at http://www.skye-kin.co.uk/

I met this lady a few months ago - she has done extensive research on the families in North Skye and may well be able to help.

Hi Rose

Probably no connection, but I have recently been researching my great uncle (Murdo McSwan) who was killed in action on 22 July 1915 (I think his 21st birthday), having served with the 5th battalion Cameron Highlanders.

He came from Durinish on the Island of Skye and although it is stated that he enlisted in Glasgow, it is thought that this is unlikely as the battalion was raised in Inverness.

Just a reminder that there is a 'Duirinish' on the mainland between Kyle of Lochalsh and Plockton.

Cheers.
