Hi S,

Taken a look at the 41, unfortunately this census does not  give  actual place of birth just the county, there are some that would fit roughly  though. ???

I found this on the 1851 might be of interest.

HO107/2319/126/26

4 Lords Court, Water Lane, Leeds

Joseph Gibson h.m. 30 Waterman b Leeds
Ann wife 30                                          "
Eliza Goodacre dau 12 B Bramley
William Goodacre son  7      "
Thomas Gibson son 1 b Bramley.

Obviously a second marrage for her.

I have just come across a 1841 census with Joseph Gibson 20yrs (not a Mechanic ) living in Bevis Green with a Thomas Mason , Sarah mason nee Gibson (mother ) and Ann Mason . How do I know this is the right Joseph ?..........Sarah Jane gibson wed John Pollard 1873 from Bevis Green and she was there with Sarah Mason ( G/Mother ) in 1861

Now you are asking, with so little info on the 41 it very difficult to know whether you have the right one.    I doubt anybody in 1841 would be a Mechanic, not enough industry around then.

What is the Joseph Gibson occ in 1841 ?  You seem to have found a link with this Bevis Green, so he could well be the right one.

Josephs occupation on that marriage was 'Groom'.   It does not give a place of residence for his father or Margarets - Dolefield is the residence of both Joseph and Margaret

Witnesses were Harriet Blackwell (Blackwall) and William Lingard

1851 HO107/2231/320/19

Living  ????  St, Newton, Lancashire

Joseph Gibson 31 Mechanic B. Salford
Eliza wife 29  ????? B . Derbyshire
Emma dau 3 b Manchester
Sarah Jane dau 1 b Newton.

(Although wife shown as Eliza in 1851 she is Elizabeth in 1861 which is correct).

If this is your family the GRO's own birth index shows that the maiden name of the mother of both Emma and Sarah Jane is Marples.

Joseph Gibson, mechanic, of 2 Marland Street, son of Charles Gibson, mechanic, married Elizabeth Marples, of 29 Watson Street, dau. of John Marples, confectioner on 16/4/1843 Manchester (Cathedral).

In 1841 Joseph Gibson 20, mechanic, is in Manchester living with a James Greenhouse and family.

Joseph Gibson b.23/7/1819, bp.12/1/1823 Manchester, St. Mary, Mulberry St. (Roman Catholic) son of Charles Gibson and Elizabeth Cowkwell. Three siblings also baptised same day:

Elizabeth born 18/2/1815
John born 2/1/1817
Mary Ann born 18/11/1822

A Charles Gibson bc.1780 buried 13/7/1841 Manchester Cathedral which could possibly be the father.

Thanks for your replys Rosie99 and Annette . I assumed they would both be living with their Parents but the mechanic is deffinately not the one . I found Margaret with Sarah Jane I think with a sister around Deansgate but sadly Margaret was dead after the census of 1851. Sarah jane went to live with Grannie in Bury  1861. Again thank you both.

Ignore all of this - did some more checking and Sarah Jane Gibson, dau. of the above, married a James Howard 20/5/1872 St. Philip, Manchester.   Clearly shows her father was Joseph Gibson, mechanic.

So, we go back to 1861 census where Sarah Jane Gibson, 11, is with her grandmother Sarah Mason, widow bc.1800 Leeds.  When Sarah Gibson married Thomas Mason she was a spinster.

I don't believe she is the daughter of Joseph Richard Gibson and Margaret Allen (marr.1848) as their daughter was Sarah Ann, according to her baptism.  JRG states father a James Gibson, joiner.

Things just don't seem to add up.  What information is on the marriage certificate when she married John Pollard?   Doesn't seem to be online.

Annette , I  have assumed Sarah wed James Gibson and had Joseph Richard . James has died and Sarah went on to wed Thomas Mason .

I do have a similar case and on the wedding cert the maiden and late name is written
