Title: MARTINS in cork 1850s/60s Mystery
Post by: Dmartin on Friday 02 March 07 14:36 GMT (UK)
Looking for help regarding my G G/F x 3.  JOHN MARTIN  born abt 1818 Erith, Kent.  He married Emily Buckhurst b1823 ,The marriage was at Chislehurst , Kent. Dec qtr 1844.  I can find them living in Kent ,UK.  In 1851 census, but they then dissappear. His wife Emily died in Cork 5th June 1865  aged 42, but Interned back in Erith,Kent.  So looks like they were living in Cork . They had 3 children in the 1851 census Charles abt 1846, Emily abt 1847, William 1849 all born Erih,Kent. JOHN MARTIN was a Farmer in Kent, 118 acres employing 5 men. JOHN MARTIN reappears in Kent in 1881 and 1891 where he died in 1893.  Can anyone think why they came to CORK ?. I do not know who JOHN parents were. Maybe they were form from Cork. Were they any Landowners/ farmers named MARTIN in Cork Area?.  A elderly relative did some inconclusive research, he seems to remember Place names in CORK, Sheermount Lyre Seat possibly nr Ballincollig?

Longshot i know but if anyone has any ideas or advice/info please  get in touch

You could be looking for Freemount in Co. Cork.  There is also a village of Lyre which is near Nadd in Co. Cork and both of these places might be considered near Ballingcollig, Blarney and Donoughmore.

have you a marriage record for John and Emily ?

A cert should give you name and occupations of their fathers, so you could then search for possible baptisms for them. Also should show John's occupation which might help with why he moved to Cork..

Update  Yes I've got the marriage cert.  John Martin was a farmer . John named other people on his will in 1894 back in Erith ,Kent . Agnes H Clements c1860 who would think is his daughter and John Ebenezer Martin who could be another son although there is no birth records for them in Kent , so presume they might of born Ireland. I have found both parents for John & Emily but no Irish connection.
Irish census 1901 Agnes H Clements 38 Grand Parade Greenmount Cork.
Where should I look for Irish birth records for John Ebenezer Martin and Agnes H Clements c1860 or a marriage record for Agnes ? John Ebenezer was back in Erith at the time of John seniors will in 1894 .
Thanks for any help/advice, hope i've not made it too confusing !

Registration of births started in Ireland in 1864 - so you would need to check for church records for possible baptisms of John and Agnes. What denomination were your Martin family ?

This looks like your Agnes in 1901 - but she's born in England ?

   Clement / Allford / Connor household (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/No__1_Urban__Centre_Ward__Cork_City/Grand_Parade/1109675/)

Have you found Agnes in 1911 in Ireland - what's her husbands name ?

possible marriage for Agnes for the BMD Index on FamilySearch ...

  Name: Agnes Hester Martin
  Registration district: Cork
  Event type: Marriage
  Quarter and year: Jul-Sep 1885
  Volume: 5 / Page: 61

this matches with an entry for a Charles John Clements - i.e. same reference details.

Most of the Martins were catholic from that era.  I haven't  found Agnes birth in England ,even though she states England as her birth on the 1901 Irish census . Don't think she is on any census 1911.  I think my next move should be to get that marriage cert . Thanks again for the link Shane. I would think that is the marriage .

The IrishGenealogy (http://www.irishgenealogy.ie) website has many RC parish records for Co. Cork - mostly for South West county, but also some for the city - might be worth a try..

This looks like Agnes in 1911 - remarried http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Cork_No__6_Urban/Cook_Street/394071/

There are matching references on FamilySearch for Cork 1906 for  Agnes Hester Clements / Martin marrying Patrick Barrett. Cook St is a few hundred metres from the Grand Parade, the earlier address.

As well, have you considered that her birth could have been registered as Anne or another form of this name? The names Anne and Agnes are related.

Thanks to you all for help and advice. Have ordered copy of Agnes Hester Martin marriage cert  (waiting) , hoping i will get at least her father John Martin occupation. Which might lead me to a reason why he moved to Ireland between 1850s and 1870s. Still cannot find  any birth record for Agnes Hester Martin in anywhere .Have tried different variations

There are some births listed around the right timeframe as 'Female Martin.' If any is in the right registration district it might be worth a go to order the cert.

Shows a JOHN MARTIN in 1852 Holy Trinity Parish -Fitton Street.

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Cork_No_1_Urban/
Cook_Street

This shows a Martin family whom I know had a Greengrocer/Flower shop in the 1960's, 2 ladies & 1 gentleman quiet elderly at this time, all unmarried. May be a connection as Cook Street is quiet near Grand Parade that you mentioned for Agnes Hester Clements/Barrett.
