Hi
Any idea where in Kent?   The IGI on www.familysearch.org has several Henry Swans baptised around that time and as it is not full coverage there could be many more. Have you found him in a census?  If you can quote that it might help.  If you have a marriage certificate that will give his father's name which will be very helpful.

The only info I have is from his death certificate in Australia.
It says he married an Ann Tuff Golding on 12/7/ 1855 in what looks like Kewington but I guess this is either Kensington or Kennington.  1841 census in Kent  and 1851 census says he was in Middlesex If it was him. One family tree on the net says his mother was Jane Swan(Clark) But again I am unsure if this is my Henry. Hope this helps

Hi

There is a marriage Ann Tuff GOLDING to Henry SWAN in the June quarter of 1856 registered in the Milton (Kent) registration district (includes the village of Newington near Sittingbourne) ref. 2a 867.

The date would be a bit out (June quarter covers April, May, June) and 1856 instead of 1855 but perhaps the person registering the death wasn't too sure of the exact date.  Given the names, it does look pretty certain that it's the correct marriage.

A copy of the marriage certificate should give you some more details ie. father's name & occupation (assuming he wasn't illegitimate) to help confirm what you have already and help you move forwards.

I think getting the marriage certificate would be a good start.  You can search all BMDs free at www.ancestry.co.uk   Choose the complete version and then you can search each quarter.  However - the only Henry Swan marriage I could see in that year and quarter was in Farnham and I could not find a corresponding Ann Golding, or Ann Tuff.  Just realised you might mean 7th Dec not Aug 12th but can't see him then either.   However it is always possible that the person registering the death got the year wrong so to do a wider search would be well worth while.
Yes - the marriage is registered in Milton, Kent in the April/May/June quarter of 1856.   ref 2a 867
You can find it on the FreeBMD site and on ancestry.co.uk

Many thanks for all that have helped me. We took the risk from Australia and ordered Henry Swan's and Ann Tuff Golding's marriage certificate. They were married in Newington on 12/6/1856 in Newington parish, Newington.  It was registered in Milton. Henry's father was Samuel Swan (a labourer) and Ann's father was Edmund Golding ( a farmer) Henry and Ann were both aged 28 so born abt 1828. Even with this info I am still unable to find either Ann or Henry's births. I hope someone can help. Maybe info from a census to find their mother's names?
Thanks

Hi Shauna
Think I may have found them in 1861 with daughters Ann, 4 and Eliza 8 months.  If this is the correct family then I will try to trace back in 1851.

Here is the family in 1861
Bill Street, Strood
Henry Swan Head Mar 35 Ag Lab b Kent Milton
Ann Wife Mar b Kent Chatham
Ann Dau 4 b Kent Strood
Eliza Dau 8 months b Kent Frindsbury
Ref RG9 474 160

The ages of the daughters fit in with the marriage date but Henry seems a bit old and Ann a bit young!

Thanks Barbara
This isnt them as they left in Dec 1856 to go to Victoria, Australia. Which is where they had their children( Frances 1858, Samuel 1859, Jane 1861, Jesse Ann 1867, Henry Richard 1869 and Rhoda 1872). I think they were both possibly with there parents in 1841 or living separately if this can be found.

Right - then I may have found the Swan family in 1841 in Bredgar.

Samuel Swan 55 Ag lab
Jane 50
Henry 13
Mary Ann 8
All born in county

Will check for them in 1851 but I think Henry is not at home. Who were the witnesses on the marriage certificate?

In 1851 Henry is at Church Farm Stockbury in the household of the farmer Henry Bing.

Henry Swan Servant 18 Farm labourer b Kent Bredgar

Samuel and Jane are still in Bredgar

Silver Street, Bredgar
Samuel Swan Head Mar 67 Labr on Roads b Kent Bredgar
Jane Wife Mar 60 b Kent
Richd Son Unm 41 Farm Labr b Kent Bobbing
Edward Son Unm 25 Farm Labr b Kent Bredgar
Bredgar and Stockbury are neighbouring parishes.

Barbara

Edit.  Sorry missed Jane's birthplace of Stockbury.  Samuel and Jane are still in Bredgar in 1861. There is a note which loks as though by now samuel is deaf and blind.

In 1851 there is an Ann Golding age 22 a visitor with the Head of Household Ann Golding age 83 - at least I think it could be - at Newington, Milton   I did not note the reference as I then went on to look at 1841.
Checking that family in 1841 we have
Ann Golding 72 Farmer
Ann Golding 17
Hezekiah Spittle 50 farmer (he is son in law in 1851)
William Golding 20
Edmund Golding 11  all b in County
HO107/475/2 F6 p5
Assuming that the youngsters must be grandchildren then there is a possibility that there was an Edmund son of the older Ann (and even husband) who has died.
Worth a look anyway.

1851 HO107 1627 F351 p20 Newington
Ann Golding wid Hd farmer of 140 acres emp 9? lab b Newington
Hezekiah Spittle son in law wid 60 Farm bailiff b Borden
Sarah Golding son's widow 55? serv b Halstow
Ann Golding single visitor 22 serv b Newington
Edward Pepper serv single 20 farm servant b Bobbing

If you look at the IGI on familysearch there are a couple of Golding marriages and one is for Edmund to Sarah Ellis in 1828.  Another is Jonathan to Martha and they turn up in later census too. Agian, worth a look.
Ages for Ann are not quite working out but they were often wrong.

And here is the Tuff connection.
Marriage Ann Tuff to Thomas Golding 12 Nov 1788 Newington
IGI batch number M019686

If we assume that this is the Ann who is still alive in 1841 and 1851 then you need to look for a death of husband Thomas.  I wonder if he left a will?

Good morning. You 2 have been very busy while I've slept. Great sleuthing and many thanks. The witnesses at the wedding for Henry and Ann were Hezekiah Golding and Augusta Caroline Eclipse Golding. I have found them as brother and sister in Bobbing ,Kent with dad Hezekiah Golden and Susan Ann (mother) I think Ann also had a brother Hezekiah as I found a Hezekiah Tuff Golding b abt 1836 (no details) an Free ancestry.com The ages are confusing as Ann said she was 28 on the boat so b abt 1828.
Also on the boat was Edward Swan b abt 1826 and Richard b abt 1811. I did find a Henry Swan b 23/12/1827 with mother Jane(Clark) on a Public member family tree entry. This could be him if you think his father Samuel married a Jane?

My last reply was rushed as I was on my way to work. The Swan Family you found seems to be correct . Well done. You both are pros at this. I'm a little bit confused with the Golding Family however, especially with the Hezekiahs.

The Goldings need a bit more sleuthing.  Hezekiah Spittle died early in 1861 - before the census.  He is the son of Charles and Elizabeth Spittle and marries Ann Page Golding in 1815 - see www.familysearch.org     She dies in 1838.   That makes Ann Page Golding the daughter of the Ann found in the 1841 and 51 census.
Hezekiah Golding born c1801 appears in several census and his son, who is Hezekiah Tuff Golding, is in several census years too.  He marries at least twice.  Once to Frances Hughes in 1858 then in 1861 he is a widower but by 1871 married to Emily.  Augusta is also widowed young.
I don't think HTG is Ann's brother but a cousin.  However you would need to get certificates to prove this.
They are obviously all connected but you need to be sure of the various relationships.     If you can get the film of the parish records to search at your nearest LDS centre then it might be very helpful.
I belive there may be marriage transcripts for Kent so it might be worth asking for a look up on  them.   Have look at www.genuki.com and see what they list.
There is another Hezekiah Golding living in Cambridgeshire - as it is an unusual name you may find they link up further back.

Hello Andrea and Shauna
The Richard and Edward on the boat tie up with the 2 sons I found in the 1851 census living with Samuel and Jane.
Ooops - have just seen you have posted again. Will read and help out if possible.

As the Swan family seems to come from Bredgar and Jane from Stockbury you may be interested in a CD available from the Kent Family History Society which covers both parishes - CD19. See
http://www.kfhs.org.uk/
These parishes do not seem to be covered by the IGI.
Alternatively you could check whether the LDs have filmed the PRs.

Sorry Shauna
LDS - Latter Day Saints.
If you look on the family search site
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Home/News/frameset_news.asp
click on "Library" and then "Family History Centres" and you should be able to find your nearest LDS centre.
The LDS have filmed some parish registers that are not on the IGI.
You can check by clicking on the link to the "Family History Library Catalogue".
If you want to view a film and you need to contact your centre so that they can order it if necessary, there is usually a small charge I believe.
Hope this helps.

Hi Alta,
I have a possible birth for Henry 23/12/1827 not confirmed.
I have not found anything on Samuel Swan ( b abt 1785) or his wife Jane (unknown). I would be most grateful if you can add anything to my findings.

Bredgar records has Henry Swan bap Dec 23 1827 to Samuel and Jane - no marriage in Bredgar . Samuel was bap Bredgar Jan 18 1784  -to Samuel and Elizabeth . A Samuel Swan married Elizabeth Clark Nov 9 1783.
Henry's older brother Samuel  also went to Australia. Send me a PM if you would like further info as his story has been recorded .

Hi Alta, Thats fantastic . Your info confirms Henry's birth and parents and gives me his grandparents. Unreal!! I did not know he had an older brother Samuel so would be most interested to find out his details and will send you a PM. It is interesting that you said Samuel's mother was a Clark as I saw someone's post on ancestry.com that said Jane was a Clark also. Maybe they got the two confused.
Many thanks

Hi Shauna, I realise this is an old post and you may already know all of the following.
However as I was born at Tunstall, I have researched a lot of the village folks history,s.

Your Henry Swan was one of twelve children born to Samuel Swan Born c 1790 died 22/4/1861 and Jane (nee Clarke) born Stockbury Kent 1790 died 13/10/1876. Both buried at Bredgar Kent.

You may already know that one of Henry's Siblings - Samuel Swan born 1811 was a naughty lad and was sentenced to "be transported beyond the seas for the term of his natural life" (transported to Australia) by  Kent azzizes following his trial on 10 March 1834 for Stealing Five Bushells of Wheat value 30 shillings and Two sacks of Wheat value 4 shillings .from his employer George Baker a Farmer of Tunstall (next village to Bredgar). As there were four witnesses and his records describe him as an illiterate protestant farm labourer it would appear he maybe wasn't as clever as he thought.
Apparently, according to data on the internet, he did very well in Australia where he married  and sponsored quite a few of his relatives to emigrate and settle there. Your Henry being one presumably. Samuel died  aged 69 at Sale, Victoria. on the 11/12/1880:

Hi Roger,
Thanks for your reply. You are correct I have discovered a lot since my initial post. Samuel Swan was born 17/11/1811 Bobbing. He was the 2nd eldest of 12 although others think he was the eldest. His 3 brothers Richard, Henry and Edward went to Australia as well as some of his nephews. Had Samuel not had the convict stain on his record he would possibly have been even more recognised for his achievements. He died quite a wealthy man.
Cheers  :)
