hi,
     Looking for THE  Family OF A JOHN  DONALDSON FROM IRELAND BUT not sure if its Northern or Southern ireland ???
     JOHN DONALDSON b1833/4 IRELAND  MARRIED A CATHERINE? AROUND 1872 DAUGHTER SARAH J bORN iRELAND 1873,ON 1891 CENSUS living in BARROW IN FURNESS LANCASHIRE WORKING IN SHIP YARD ANOTHER DAUGHTER CATHERINE E b 1874 BARROW,

Your best bet might be to get the birth certificate for the child born in Barrow.  That will give her mother's maiden name and then you can search for a marriage to give fathers of both parties.    All English BMDs are free to search online at www.ancestry.co.uk   Choose the full version.

You do not mention the other children who are with them in 1891.  Dorcas, William, Patrick, Mary and another Patrick which seems odd.
There is a birth for Dorcas Donaldson in Jan 1876 at Ulverston ref 8e 824.   That might be worth getting to see if her mother is also Catherine.  I just wondered whether she might be a second wife who insisted on her son being called Patrick too.  That may be a complete red herring or it may be an enumerator's error or perhaps it is a similar name?
I cannot find them in 1881.

hello pauline,could this be your sarah.  BIRTH. SARAH JANE DONALSON 3-5-1872 BELFAST, ANTRIM, IRE.  PARENTS JOHN DONALSON & CATHERINE WATERS. sorry could'nt find a marriage for john.

 i found one birth for a john donaldson. 10-2-1834.  bonneybefore, antrim, ire. parents alexander donaldson & margaret laird. found this from a different scource from sarahs..may not be as reliable.

Could you tell me where you found those Irish details?   I have some Irish folk in my tree but have never found a site with births etc online other than familysearch.

Thanks.  Will let you know if I need help when I am a bit more organised!  I am looking for the family of Thomas Oakley and Annie Pye in Belfast.  I have not yet found their marriage but have various children from 1905 to 1918.
