With regards to the John Alfred Cartlidge you posted, the only Census I can find him on is the 1881 Census which stated that he was born in Tunstall Staffordshire in 1855.I am very curious with him naming his daughter Edna.

More please!!!

My relatives are buried there and as I'm in New Zealand, I'd be very grateful for pictures of their gravestones.

Next time you go in there would you mind looking for Huntingdons and Pyes please?  My grandmother lived at Hall O'Coole at Aston, just outside Nantwich and I know that there are lots of rellies buried there.

Also the photo of the inscription telling of the cholera epidemic....unfortunately a leaf obscured the date of the epidemic.  Please could I send you on yet another errand.......

Thanks again Sarah,  :-*

**29/06/07**UPDATE

Hi All,

Since my last post, the Barony Road Cemetery has sadly fallen into a degree of decline   Local press has reported that the only person who voluntarily cut the grass etc, a local elderly man has retired and since the graveyard is not council owned there seems no responsibility for it's upkeep at the moment as St Mary's Church (Nantwich Parish Church) doesn't own it either.....

Today it is overgrown, has unstable or damaged gravestones, and has suffered litter from local youths using it as a drinking den, more disturbing is the graffiti in the area containing cremation memorials and a few WW2 memorials (1940's - 1990's)

I'll attach some photos taken earlier today which sadly show the decline compared with my photos of last year....

I'll update with developments as I hear them and hope this unique, old little cemetery can be saved from demise.

Sarah :)

How bizarre is this!!  I was just browsing through this topic as I saw it had been updated when I spotted the photograph of the grave of John Procter and his second wife Mary.  She was previously married to James Pennell who died in 1861.  Even more curious is that I have a photograph that is believed to be of this couple.

It's sad to see how quickly a place can decline if it isn't looked after.   :(

Hi Jean

How bizarre!! What a co-incidence!!  ;D .... seems strange if not a little spooky to see a photo of people whose grave it is!!......I have no relations at all buried in the cemetery but feel a connection to it as its been the view from where I live for the past 8 years!!

Sarah :)

Post by: Chrissy13 on Monday 02 July 07 22:41 BST (UK)
Hi Sarah,

That is SO sad to see the graveyard in such a state.  Methinks there'll be some other motive behind it all-  like the council trying to say after a while that no one cares about it, so they may as well use it for building........

What do you think?

My ancestors, as you know, are buried there.  It was so good to receive photos from you of their graves.

I am bemused that no one has taken over the care of the graveyard.  Surely the council has some responsibility by law?  Or if not, then whoever owns the land I bet has signed some agreement that it is looked after...... or am I just wishing??

Thanks again Sarah for taking time and great care in sending those superb photos.  You are a star!

Chris

Hi

I might be quite wrong about this, but I seem to remember that the burial ground at All Saints was transcribed - many years ago - and indexed with a map giving the precise location of each stone.  This would make finding a relative much easier.  I know someone who I am certain has a copy of this document, and will ask about it.

My grandfather was buried there (in the family plot) in 1998.  Isn't there some kind of law which prevents development within 100 years after the last burial?

It is very sad indeed to see it in such a state.  The old churchyard at Wybunbury is in a similar state, if not worse.

Yes, All Saints cemetery at the Barony was transcribed by the Cheshire Family History Society a few years ago - it has been published and is for sale or can be viewed at the centre at Alsager. It is very comprehensive - but of course only for those graves with headstones.

They have also done Wybunbury but this is not ready for publishing yet.

I have visited the CRO this week and they have the original plan of the 'new' part of the Cemetery (since 1886). This shows the numbered grave plots although newer ones have been squeezed in since then.

They also have the 'official' graves register which is quite useful but has not been properly completed over the years and there are lots of gaps - I guess less than 30% of graves are registered.

If Margaret provides names and dates I am sure one of us locals would try to find the grave for her.

Hi Le Sap,
For the SCFHS try their website at  http://www.fhsc.org.uk/

They also have a research room and library at Manchester Metropolitan University at Alsager (at the old college site) and you can look at the records there or purchase various books and cd's, including the All Saints MI's. It is open on Mondays and Wednesdays.

It was fascinating to see the grave of John Steventon as that is my maiden surname.
I have only bare bones of family links at present but hopefully I will be able to fill some gaps.
I am a descendant of Edwin Steventon.

hello Sarah,

Tanks for keeping me in mind.  If it helps. John Ravenscroft Billington who rolled over in Sept Qtr 1912 married his wife Ann at St Mary's Gt Budworth.   She died <1895>  Ref: CAT/64/63 Cheshire West approx 17 years before him and there may be a clue there as to burial whereabouts. The couple were from the Monks Coppenhall district. There were five children registered under Crewe.

Good Luck I would be quite happy if you waited for the weather to warm up before venturing out.
Merry Christmas.
Ray.

We live in France, so don't get to Nantwich very often. Would it be possible to find any Cartwrights, especially from the 1870s?

Thanks Sarah,

That would be nice if you have the time.

The Cartwrights would be William (Dec 1873), Thomas (Oct 1875), Samuel (1877), Sarah (Oct 1893), and possibly in the new cemetery, William (July 1916).

I'm also interested in Owens and Edges, in case you come cross any. (I know where my grandparents' graves are - Jane 1964 and Joseph 1973 - but others may be a revelation).

Thank you very much!

Neil

Its been a while since I've taken photos at Barony Road Cemetery so while the sun was shining off I went ..... to find that it looks like   somebody's attempted to bulldoze it ???..or an over-enthusiastic grass cutter has been about .......unfortunately there's a few more toppled and broken headstones but signs of tree-felling so maybe it's just the start of a tidy up program.......see what you think.....

Hi

I have been forwarded to yourself from Kathb in the hope that you may be able to help, I am looking for a death / burial for John O'Hara... I have two John's in my tree one was born c1790 but I can't find a death for him and the other (his grandson) was born c1839 and died in 1916, also Andrew O'Hara b. 1820 and d. 1847.  I wonder if you would be so kind as to have a look for me, 80% of my relatives were born in Nantwich and I was born in Crewe but I now live in Lancashire so it is a bit difficult to get there now.... I wish I had started my family history before I moved it would have made life a lot easier!!

Thanks in advance

Hi
I noticed at the start you said that knowing when people died is helpful because of how the cemetry is set out.  whereabouts would i go to find people buried between 1920-1960ish?  i am looking for Fred and mary stockton buried together and thought that i might try and find them this week

Hi Vicky,
Burials of that date are much more likely to be in Whitehouse Lane, although there are some in the Barony.
Have you checked the registers? Anybody buried in Whitehouse Lane will be in the registers held at Crewe Cemetery Office and will give you the grave number - they are easy to find but make sure you ask them for the right register.
If they are in the Barony they should be in St Mary's registers in Nantwich Library - but will not give a grave number. That date in the Barony will not follow the plan but may be fitted in anywhere. FHSC have transcribed them all and it may be worth you looking there first.

Vicky,
Yes, the road opposite Sainsburys is White House Lane - the cemetery is up there 200yds on the left.
I think you probably have to join FHSC by post - but I am sure you could go to Alsager as a visitor - they are quite helpful. It is only open Monday and Wednesday but not every week - have a look at the FHSC website at www.fhsc.org.uk

Vicky,
I was in Crewe Cemetery Office today and had a quick look for you.
There is a Mary Stockton buried 16 July 1958 aged 81 in Whitehouse Lane grave 468B. But I could not see a Fred Stockton (although it was only a quick look).
If you want to have a look 468B should be in the block to the left of the old chapel - but I do not know if there is a headstone.

Hi Sarah

I've just found your wonderful thread and wondered if I could take advantage of your offer.  Is there any chance you could look for some Ravenscrofts for me when you are out and about?  Reading your thread I think they may be in the Whitehouse Lane one - they are John Thomas Ravenscroft, his wife Lilian and their daughter Florence.  I'm sorry but I do not have the dates they died but John Thomas was born 1872 and was over 80 years old when he died so it will be 1952 or after.  We're hoping to visit Nantwich in September and would love to visit their graves.  Thanks very much.

Hi Sarah,

What wonderful pictures you have taken , but so very sad about the state of the Churchyard. Could not believe the names on the first gravestone that appeared - had to quickly get my files - and yes  John Alfred Cartlidge was the father of Eliza Gertrude Annie Cartlidge who married my gt. uncle Albert Pearson ( of 48 Welsh Row ) on the 21st October 1903, at The Parish Church Acton.

Should you  ever see any Pearson graves on any of your visits to the Churchyard I would really appreciate it at to date I have " lost " 3 generations of the Pearson family who are buried in Nantwich - all of the names are listed in the Burial Records for St Mary's Church Nantwich, starting with Thomas Pearson buried 5th April 1868, his wife Mary buried 18th October 1885, Rose Pearson 3 February 1920 aged 32 and Priscilla Pearson ( my gt grandmother ) 15th March 1922 aged 71. The address for the Pearsons from the 1880's was 48 Welsh Row Nantwich, so had thought that maybe they might have been buried in one of the few old graves that I believe used to be at St Mary's but no records seem to be available.

Thank you once again for such amazing pictures, quite made my day

Susan

Hi Susan,
Burials of that date will be in the Barony.
The last burial in St Mary's churchyard was Joseph Clarke on 20 July 1849. After that date they would be in the Barony. There are some records of the old Churchyard held by FHSC at Alsager but I do not think they are complete.

Whitehouse Lane opened in 1875 as the Nantwich General Cemetery and so since then there were 2 graveyards in use. I think the rule was that any burial through St Mary's was at the Barony and any other at Whitehouse Lane. Note that All Saints Chapel in the Barony graveyard was an annex to St Mary's.

Peter

Thank you very much for all of the information re the cemeteries in Nantwich, it is not easy trying to find a family grave when I do not live in Cheshire, let alone Nantwich.

Were there any graves at all at St Mary's Church Nantwich I wonder

Many thanks for your help, will just keep trying.

Hi Sarah,

Thank you very much for the website - it looks from the date on the plaque as if it is unlikely that members of the Pearson family would have been buried at St Mary's. Church.

Have just left the family history research too late, no great aunts or uncles around to tell the family stories mores the pity.

Look forward to seeing more of you wonderful pictures,

Susan

Hi!

Wonderful photos!

I am researching the family history of the Robinson family, David Robinson 1798-1868 and his son John Robinson 1826-1894 - the Robinsons were Nantwich shoemakers. I see you are listing Robinson graves in the Whitehouse lane cemetary and wonder if you could give me details. I do not live in the area but am hoping to visit Nantwich later this year and if the graves you have photographed belong to my ancestors it would be nice to know where to look.

Many thanks.

Hi Gillm,
Sorry about that but hit the wrong key and posted it before I had finished. Try again:

5 Nov 1868 David Robinson, 69, Beam Street
4 Oct 1870 Sarah Robinson, 70, Beam Street

Whitehouse Lane did not open until 1875 so these must be in the Barony Cemetery. I have not found them yet but will keep looking when I am there.

Hi

I noted GillM's reply further up this thread, reasearching John Robinson etc.

I've recently discovered some of my Robinson ancestors in Nantwich (shoemakers also, living next door to John Robinson and possibly related) and wonder if they are buried in this cemetary?

I'm looking for Henry and Eliza born about 1826 & 1830 repsectively, unfortunately I don't have dates of death.

Any help appreciated :D

TIA

Hi Paul,
I have not seen a grave yet for your Henry or Eliza Robinson either in the Barony or Whitehouse Lane cemeteries.

I think I have nearly all Robinson burials from Nantwich St Mary's and have not seen them there either. Will keep looking for you on my travels.

I do have a couple of things on Henry and Eliza:
Nantwich St Mary's burial: 3 June 1852, Ann, dau of Henry & Eliza Robinson, aged 5, Hospital Street.

Nantwich St Mary's marriage: 22 Mar 1846 Henry Robinson m. Eliza Williamson.

This Henry was the son of David Robinson and Sarah Hockenhull and these are related to Gillm - so you may get some more help there.

Peter

Hi Peter,

Fantastic information, sincere thanks  :)

I think Henry & Eliza had their first son in about 1852, the year that Ann died. Is Hospital Street their residence? Is this info from the parish records?

I've just heard from Gillm via email so resources will be pooled!

Many thanks again,

Paul

Hi Paul,
Bit more about Henry and Eliza:

Nantwich St Mary's baptisms: children of Henry & Eliza Robinson:
18 Aug 1851, James
15 Mar 1853, Anne Eliza
19 July 1864, Henry
1 Oct 1867, Frank
24 Aug 1870, Blanche

All in Hospital St except last one Blanche who was in Millstone Lane.

More on the marriage of Henry and Eliza:
Henry's father is David Robinson of Beam St. Eliza's father Thomas Williamson of Welch Row. Witnesses were John Robinson and Anne Williamson.

Hi Sarah,
Any chance you could look for Nixon's?
The earliest one is...
Thomas... DOB ?...Died...1846
Mary........1759...............1859

George....1803...............1855
Jane........1801...............?

John........1834...............?
Rachel.....1836...............?
Sorry but at the moment I havn't found the missing dates, I am coming up to visit in June so some pointers would be very helpful.
Thomas, George and John, Cordwainers, and they all lived in welsh row I think, maybe wood street (George).
I have John down as living at 145 welch row and I am led to believe he was the John Nixon who built the houses at Nixons Row?

I hope you have something to go on,
Much obliged,
Ken
