Dear Rootschatters, Hi there. I'm sure I will get some help here. :) I've just started seriously researching my spouse's Maori ancestry, and it seems that there is a bit of a naming pattern but I can't quite work it out yet.
A lot of the women seem to have the same surname, and that name keeps popping up in all their children's middle and first names. And then there's the people with just one name. Oh boy.
Any clues?
Also, could somebody please let me know re etiquette of tracing Maori ancestry. I know being an Australian that there is respect for not showing images of Aboriginals and/or Torres Straight Islander peoples.
Kind regards,
Alison from sunny Queensland, Australia.
SURNAMES: MINARAPA, MARENA (or MARRINER), Cook (Kuku), Tanapo, including STANAWAY (Captain John James Stanway 1817~1874) & Clark and many more.
This website below is of particular interest to me ... family genealogy 'Tides of Time' about the family of Capt. J.J. Stanaway, an early pioneer of the Kaipara Harbour of New Zealand.
http://www.myrasplace.net/tides/fam00675.htm
And it seems there is a book on the life of Capt JJ Stanaway in the Whangarei Branch Library.

And luckily there is information available on MINARAPA, some MARENA and quite a few STANAWAYs at http://www.familysearch.org.

Hi Allycat :D
You have probably already found this, but a friend of mine who is Maori told me about this resource a while ago. It might be useful:
http://library.christchurch.org.nz/Resources/Maori/Whakapapa/
Thought this one from maori.org.nz might be helpful too:

P.S. It might be worth posting on one of these forums, I notice they have a "Whakapapa - general questions" one under the "Finding Whanau" heading:
http://www.maori.org.nz/papa_panui/fhome.asp

Dear Prue, Thank you for that. I couldn't remember how to spell Whakapapa. Oops. And other site will be really helpful.
Q.What can I do, living in Australia, if I would like a photocopy of library book (or certain pages) of life of Cpt JJ Stanaway as mentioned previously?
Note: I did a global search of rootschat for STANAWAY but it seems that no-one has done any lookup requests on this surname or this part. fellow. And he was born in Camberwell, Surrey, England. I've checked familysearch.org and they just have his birth, with no parents listed. Also checked http://www.surnamenavigator.org for STANAWAY world-wide.

Hi Al
You may find something at the Auckland City Library which has some material online. You don't need a library card no. to search the categories with a little koru icon next to them.
History & Genealogy Digital Library (http://www.aucklandlibrary.co.nz/findyoursubject/digitallibrary/historyandgenealogydigitallibrary.htm)
These are the results of a search (on Local history, arts & music category) for Stanaway, John James. If you click on the catalogue no. you will see that you can request a copy of the page for a modest fee:
Search Results (http://0-www.aucklandcity.govt.nz.www.elgar.govt.nz/dbtw-wpd/exec/dbtwpub.dll?AC=SEE_ALSO&QF0=Descriptors&QI0==%22Stanaway,+John+James,+1813-1874%22&XC=/dbtw-wpd/exec/dbtwpub.dll&BU=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aucklandcity.govt.nz%2Fdbtw-wpd%2Flocalhistory%2Flhamadv.html&TN=LocHam&SN=AUTO3888&SE=618&RN=0&MR=20&TR=0&TX=1000&ES=0&CS=1&XP=&RF=Reportweb&EF=&DF=Displayweb&RL=0&EL=0&DL=0&NP=2&ID=&MF=&MQ=&TI=0&DT=&ST=0&IR=49253&NR=0&NB=0&SV=0&BG=&FG=&QS=&OEX=ISO-8859-1&OEH=ISO-8859-1)
The very last result from a book called Early Northern Wairoa is written by my great grandfather but I'm afraid I don't have a copy of it! :-[
Good luck with the search. :)
Cheers

Hi Allycat
Just reading through this thread....
I did a quick on-line search of my local library and couldn't find that book, but looking at the link you provided;
http://whgnzsg.orcon.net.nz/library.html
It's not a public library, but the library resources of the Whangarei Branch of the NZ Society of Genealogists, which made me think that this "book" may only be a small publication.
Suggest you contact the Whangarei NZSG and ask them for Exact Title, Author, publisher, ISBN (if it has one), etc.
If you can get this info, someone may be able to get their hands on this publication for you..

Hi there, since I have started researching my whakapapa I have found that my grand parents surname have change over the years.
eg.
my grandmothers maiden name is Reti,
her father used Reti as well,
his father used Hoani (Reti was his first name)
his father used Waimango (Hoani was his first name)
So we have gone from Waimango to Reti. It was quite common for the children to use their fathers first name as their surname and so on.
If you ever get to have a look at the Maori Land Court, quite often they used alias! another one of my ancestors made it hard for me to find as she used Puataka or Ngakai as her surname but we only ever knew it as Ripikoi! Puataka & Ngakai were parts of her parents full name. And just to throw me off guard Ripikoi was the name of her brother.
Hope this is of some help.
Cheers ???

Wow Koromo, there certainly is lots of information out there re Cpt JJ Stanaway. Goodness. I was at those website links for ages yesterday, and I forgot to thank you. So thank you.
Dear Bren, thanks for your suggestion re contacting Whangarei branch of NZSG. Shall probably do as you say when I next get the chance to telephone New Zealand. My two young sons keep me rather busy.
Hi there Azzarian, Your information was also of some help to me. It does somewhat explain what has happened re names of my spouse's Maori ancestors. I think it is a tip to search for the first name as the last name and vice versa.
Is there a website link for Maori Land Court?
Thanks to you both.
Alison from downunder.
