Post by: DJFRENCH on Monday 26 February 07 13:05 GMT (UK)
Hi there,
Please may i have some help with Emma Ferris born 1845 (about). I would like to have confirmation of who her parents were.
I know she married William Tollitt(Tollett) in 1861

Thanks for your help.

Hi

I've checked the transcripts and I can't find a baptism for Emma Ferris at that time in Long Wittenham - however on the marriage in 1861, her father is given as William Ferris lab.

Thanks for that Debbie,

i did find an Emma Farris born in Long Wittenham living with her family in the 1851 census. I'll go back to that to see if her father is William- here's hoping :)

In 1861 Emma Farris was a servant in Oxford High Street. William, who my Emma Ferris married, was a journeyman tailor in St Aldates Street so that's maybe how they met.  ;)
the census records after that were not clear about her birthplace and  Ancestry had recorded Long W Han han so it took me a while to find her birthplace.

So maybe i've found My Great great grandmothers family  :)
Thanks again

Hi DJ

I did a quick check of the 1851 census and found the family of William Ferris & wife Sarah - their Emma was aged 15 therefore born in 1835 - is this the one you want?

Well the full marriage entry from the transcripts has

Dec 19th 1861 at Long Wittenham
TOLLETT William f.a. bach tailor of St Aldgates Oxfords s/o John lab    to
FERRIS Emma fa sp otp d/o William lab

An Emma born in 1845 could not have been described as full age in 1861 - so I think we have the right girl (including father William) and she started lying about her age later.

though I have just checked the burial registers for Oxford Holywell - she was buried Oct 1 1875 Emma Tollet aged 30 - so now I am really not sure - burial registers are usually more accurate than census

I found the Emma Farris servant in 1861 in Oxford - she says she is 23 - which makes birth 1838 approx, so she doesn't seem very sure when she was born.  There is a baptism in Long Wittenham for Emma d/o William & Sarah (FAIRISH) Sep 4th 1836 and nothing that looks possible any later - so on balance I would say it is the right one   :-\

Yes debbie,
this is correct she did die very young. William remarried. They lived at 95 and 15 Holywell Street.

Good Luck

You might like this marriage also from Long Wittenham

1813 Oct 31st William FARISH to Sarah Binns

I notices on the 1851 census William says he was born in Abingdon - I have some transcripts for there as well, if that is of interest

Emma FERRIS (FAIRISH) lied about her age. She was baptised at Long Wittenham, St. Mary,  on 4 September 1836. I can give you the TOLLETT family back to abt. 1717, if you are interested.
I presume that you are a descendant of either William TOLLETTand Emma FERRIS or his second wife Elizabeth Ellen LANGSTON.

William's first cousin Ann Tollett, who was baptised at Begbroke on 12 January 1840, married my great uncle Arthur Eli Hazell.
