Title: Tracing William Henry WATKINS
Post by: pascoegreg on Sunday 25 February 07 04:17 GMT (UK)
Am trying to trace details and ancestry for William Henry Watkins, born 1811 Southgate, died Southgate 13/10/1854.  Married Sarah Prime 2/5/1835.  Have details for children but would like info on William Henry and his parents etc.
Any help would be appreciated. ???

Hello pascoegreg

There's not much help I can give but for what it's worth here goes.

The registers for the Weld Chapel Southgate for this time frame have been transcribed and put on the LDS site 'the IGI'

Apart from that, according to Phillimore's Atlas for Middlesex, no original registers have been deposited for safe keeping at the London Metropolitan Archives or somewhere similar, they may still be with the incumbent. There 'may' be something at the Society of Genealogists.

Trying to find the parish church for this area is tricky, there is a CofE church St Andrew, but I thinks it's too young, 1904, unless it was rebuilt on an earlier church, there is a Catholic church dating to the 1860's again out of the time frame, and then there is the Weld Chapel.

I think at this time your best bet might be here

http://www.enfield.gov.uk/448/index448.htm

it's a link to the archives service of Enfield council, they may be able to give you more information on where to look next or if they have any of the holdings you are looking for.

Happy hunting.

Thanks Dawn

The family's records have been captured at the Weld Chapel.  I have overviewed the LDS site and extracted the info available.

I have also ordered the relative Weld Chapel film which covers the registers for 1813 - 1875.  Hope other info will come to light.

Following that, who knows!

I will also try the enfield site recommended.

Hi Sue

William and Sarah's daughter Annie born 3/6/1844 is my GGmother on my Dad's side.  Annie went to NZ in 1860s married etc and ended up in Western Australia from 1894, where I am!

Since my original post I did find certain Weld Chapel records via Ancestry and am aware that William's parents are Henry 1780-? and Mary 1781-1845 and that he had sisters Elizabeth 1806-1847, Mary baptised 1813 and Anna 1815-1861.

While I am soldiering on I am missing certain records.  But like those that appeared on Ancestry 'out of nowhere', you never know what will show up.

I am with Heritage and it has failed to throw much at me with regard to Watkins'

Can I take it that Annie and parents emigrated to NZ  Did they all move on to Australia.. there is a mention in a letter referring to relations in Australia - are there any Coleman connections over there ?
Also the Watkins' are supposed to be of Welsh stock, I haven't got there yet  though one son has the name Evan or Evvan  also a story that one of our ancestors had aprox 25 children from 2 wives one of whom was an Indian lady
Do you use facebook ?
