Hi Josephine,
It sure looks like the right family. Do you have more details on dates, and who was the ship captain etc...
What a great info.
Thanks

Hi Alain,
The captain's name was John Robinson. The ship arrived in New York on 24 August 1883.
How did you know which ship they came over on and when?
My grandmother knew the year that her parents came to Canada from Scotland and that they sailed from Glasgow but not the ship's name.
Regards,
Josephine

Just as an aside SS Canada became a troop ship in 1899 taking soldiers to South Africa and the Boer War ! :-\

Annie,
My great-grandfather, William Robert Oliver (from Scotland), apparently served in the Boer War. Wouldn't it be funny if he went over on the S.S. Canada?

Hi Josephine,
Simply based on previous info from another branch of the family but dates did not match at the beginning but they do now. The 10 years between John (1863) and James (1873) now makes sense as we just dicovered yesterday that two other sons of Michael passed away one at the age of 2 years and the other at the age of 2 months and this between 1863 and 1873 . So this is new info that I will be looking for to confirmation in our branch under James McElligott my greatgrandfather.
Thanks

I have been trying to get info re SS Canada in 1883 for a long time. I was sure I saw a record (in 2011) of it arriving in Boston in May 1883, but I could never find that reference again. Since then whenever I search SS Canada it usually gives me the SS Canada which I believe is a newer ship, the one later used to transport troops to S.A., the one Josephine (?)provided pictures of. I don't think this is the same SS Canada that was sailing in 1880 -1883 decade. I may be wrong.
But whoever found passenger list for SS Canada in August 1883, can you help me find simiar list for May 1883 arriving in Boston.
Thanks
