Title: Hilden Baptism
Post by: jax on Saturday 24 February 07 17:22 GMT (UK)
Hi all

I've just had a message from a contact (who had seen that I was looking for Amos Hilden, my great great grandfather) who said that he had once seen a baptism for Amos Hilden on a Kent site, but cant remember where as he isnt very good with the internet etc.

I have been looking for Amos Hilden for a long time (possibly in Kent or surrounding areas) I am told by my family that he was a gypsy.  But i cant find any birth, marrige or death registrations for him..

I've also been told that gypsies didnt tend to register births etc, but did have baptisms - can anybody confirm that please?

And - does anybody know where baptisms are listed? My main problem being I cannot be sure of his birth date (somewhere between 1840s - 1880s) or which county!!!..  this is feeling like a lost cause..  ::) - I have tried googling in the info I have, but no luck yet...

All help or information greatly received

There are some Hide, Hider, Hilden, Hilder, Hyder family records on The Weald of Kent, Surrey & Sussex site:

http://theweald.org/a11.asp?QId=80904050&astart=184999999&aend=999999999

There are 3 Amos HIDERS mentioned but they don't look like travellers.

http://www.hastingleigh.com/hast-parish-baptism-part2.html   has several Hilden baptisms for travellers

Look down the list of mother's maiden names and all the ones in Blue are travellers after 1860.
The Rector waived the baptism fees for the travellers and over the next 20 years or so.
Till the new Rector reintroduced the fees again.

Amos Hilden ch.27 Nov 1868 to John Hilden and wife Ann, who were chair bottomers from Church Oakley.
also son William Hilden ch.15 Jan 1872 , by which time the parents are based in Canterbury.
and son Thomas Hilden ch 22Feb 1873 , family still based at Canterbury.

I have seen Eldon spelling for the same families. Might be worth bearing in mind if you can't find a Hildon/Hilden spelling.
