I have started a new article on Wikipedia about Rootschat. It is editable by anyone, so if you think of something ood to put in, don't hesitate to do so.
The article doesn't belong to me as it is copyleft - which means it is in the public domain.

Great! Wikipedia is a superb project, although the "anybody can edit it" set-up means that it's not exactly authoritative.
-
Even so, it is great to have this article in Wikipedia!
Goodonya, XPhile!!

Hiya Xphile2868,
This article seems to have disappeared :D I thought I would provide a Link to Wikipedia, I then saw your mention of the article so clicked on the address above and was startled to read this message:-
Rootschat
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wikipedia does not have an article with this exact name.
Start the Rootschat article or add a request for it.
Search for Rootschat in other articles.
Look for Rootschat in Wiktionary, our sister dictionary project.
Look for Rootschat in the Commons, our repository for free images,
music, sound, and video.
Look for pages within Wikipedia linking to this article.
It was a bit like standing in the crowd watching "the King wearing his new clothes" :D No doubt there is a simple explanation.

I googled "Enochlau" and got to this link,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Enochlau
my interpretation from the postings there is that maybe you can ask why the topic is deleted - perhaps Enochalu is some sort of moderator?

Thanks Newbie,
Do we know why ??? Are we allowed to contact the Wikipedia people to ask their reasoning for deleting Rootschat ???
Newbie, I read your message there and you are correct in saying Enochlau some sort of Moderator...an Administrator in fact. I have posted a message to Sarah. I would like her views on this matter as I think the least Enochlau could have done was to post an explanation for the deletion.

I had a read around Wikipedia and it seems that websites are not considered "notable"
There seems to be a voting process by which the fate of entries is decided, but I failed to find one in this case.
Maybe a case could be made for reinstatement? They seem to base "notable" on Google hits in some instances, and Rootschat would certainly qualify in that case.
A ;)

I knew someone knowledgeable would sort it out! ;D

Enochlau appears to be a "Sysop" (ie a Moderator) but I've been through his logs and there is no indication of a deletion for a Rootschat entry.
However if you search Wikipedia for Rootschat you find a link to the homepage listed under genealogy
Volunteerism
Volunteer efforts figure prominently in genealogy. These efforts range from the extremely informal to the highly organized.
On the informal side are the many popular and useful message boards and mailing lists regarding particular surnames, regions, and other topics that are maintained on the internet to facilitate queries and responses. RootsWeb.com, and RootsChat.com for example, have hundreds of them. A mailing list subscriber can send a request for help by e-mail to the list address, the mail is immediately distributed to all the subscribers, and anyone who can help will e-mail a reply to the list. On the message boards, this exchange occurs entirely online. Not only can one get an answer very quickly, merely following the conversations is very educational too. These resources are used by experienced and inexperienced researchers alike.

Falkryn,
I used the link given , wikipedia then says it can't find rootschat, and to look for it in the deletion log, (which is a link)
and I found the deletion there.

Hiya Falkryn,
I am lost :-[ I looked at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Enochlau and discovered Enoch Lau is an Administrator on the English Wikipedia. Is Enoch a "Sysop" (ie a Moderator) as well as an Administrator ???

Could we not put Rootschat there ??? I hope I am allowed to refer to W________ as W________ :D

Hi Christopher
There seems to be a voting process by which the fate of entries is decided, but I failed to find one in this case.
the above was from Arranroots posting I thought we could all get to vote to put Rootschat back on. I think in the deletion log I looked at there was a case of Enochlau putting a site back on , but I'm not sure.
Newbie ???

Is Enoch a "Sysop" (ie a Moderator) as well as an Administrator
It would appear that on that particular site Sysop,Moderator and Administrator are combined in the one role.
re Enochlau's deletion of Rootschat ..... he does not appear to give any reason in the user talk section .... possibly because no one has asked .... and there does not appear to be any reason given elsewhere.
Although I have not seen the original article I cannot believe that an article about Rootschat and its community would contravene any of the criteria given for an article to be deleted.
-
I tried searching for 'rootschat' in http://Wikipedia.org , the online encyclopaedia that is written entirely by volunteers.
There's no rootschat entry yet - how about it? Anyone can create an entry, or modify one, but ideally an entry should be written by someone who knows a lot about it - Trystan, perhaps? Details of when it was started, by whom, rootschat's objectives, usage statistics, etc.
It is an encyclopaedia, stating that "Wikipedia has a neutral point of view, which means we strive for articles that advocate no single point of view." i.e. it has to be purely factual, not praising rootschat, for example. Also, statements like 'the most widely used discussion group' would have to be backed up with a reference.
I find Wikipedia to be an incredibly useful and reliable source of information, at work and for my private interests. I try also to contribute articles, or improvements of articles, whenever I have a few minutes.

Hi David,
there was an article about RootsChat in Wikipedia a while ago, but it then got deleted.
Don't know why, but .... if we do another one, we'll need to find out why that happened first, or we could get deleted again.
Bob
Update
I've merged this with the original discussion about the deletion.
-
Ive now posted a question on Enochlau's talk page, asking why it was deleted.
-
I seem to remember that Paul E - was getting us all to sign a petition for it not to be deleted !! ::) ::)
-
All 30,000 of us ???
-
My mistake .... that was Censuswhacking !! ::)
The prospect of an entry for 'Censuswhacking' in Wikipedia being deleted on the grounds that it is a neologism seems to be emerging.
You can have your say on the subject at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censuswhacking
Rootschatters can still . entry!
cheers
Paul

Iv'e requested a copy of the deleted article to be retrieved, so that the validity of the decision to delete without any discussion can be reviewed. See:
See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_review/Content_review#Content_review
I have also notified Enochlau of my intent to dispute the deletion:

Enochlau now suggests we write a new rootschat article, "but this time putting in statements that reflect the notability of this website". He refers to guidelines relating to articles about websites. The website should either have been referred to in the media, or have won an award (see below).
Does anyone have a list of media reports regarding Rootschat - newspapers, TV, specialist magazines, books, etc?
# The content itself has been the subject of multiple non-trivial published works whose source is independent of the site itself.
* This criterion excludes:
o Media re-prints of press releases and advertising for the content or site.[4]
o Trivial coverage, such as newspaper articles that simply report the internet address, the times at which such content is updated or made available, a brief summary of the nature of the content or the publication of internet addresses and site or content descriptions in internet directories or online stores.
* This criterion includes reliable published works in all forms, such as newspaper and magazine articles, books, television documentaries, and published reports by consumer watchdog organizations.[5]
# The website or content has won a well known and independent award, either from a publication or organisation.[6]
-
Yes, why haven't we won an award yet - which ones can we have?
:D
-
I made a list of articles a while ago, where RootsChat has been mentioned:
RootsChat in the Public Eye
http://surname.rootschat.com/lexicon/rc-media.php
Is this the sort of "referred to in the media" that he means ??

We have just the thing here..

I hope the BBC is classed as reputable! Should be I pay enough for it.

;D
Whoops sorry Bob - RC is taking ages to do anything today - though it is probably my connection!
-
I've just created a new article on Wikipedia, which I think has what they want. If not, then I'm not sure what will.
It has links to news reports and external government sites so I hope it qualifies.
Please edit away to your hearts content and hopefully it will remain up this time

Excellent!
Maybe someone could add something about the founding of rootschat, voluntary ethos, the software speciifically developed for it, etc.
-
Yes, well done - I added the word free - after all that is what makes up special (among other things!)
;)

I've added the list of contents from
RootsChat in the Public Eye

Might be a good idea to add it here first, before going public with it.

What about all the research the guys did for this .............
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/4268066.stm
can we mention this too ???
-
At the most we could mention it, and give a link to the topic, but . . .
Did RootsChat get any official recognition in the media for that ???
If we didn't, then it's a "good job, well done", but it's not "in the public eye" :(

Hello
My name is Emma Robinson and I am the grand daughter of Flight Engineer J V Robinson. My father, my sister and I are flying out to Holland in a couple of weeks for his funeral and I would just like to say thank you for all your hard work and efforts for making this possible. I've just been through rewriting and wikifying the article, so it's more in the Wikipedia style. That should keep them happy about it this time I think.
It's important that anything people add should be written in a non-point of view style, otherwise they get cross and view it as an advert.
-
I just thought of something else .............. Prue's Victorian Photos !!
http://victorian-photos.rootschat.net/
Don't know if you want to use that .... but I think it's a wonderful gesture that these photo's have been donated and displayed ...... !!
Annie :)

Thanks EmPers,
it's looking a lot better :) :)
