Title: The 'Economic' Garston Liverpool
Post by: purlin on Friday 23 February 07 13:00 GMT (UK)
Has anyone any information about the 'Economic' in Garston liverpool.  Was it a factory?  I have a relative who according to a diary, worked at the Economic during 1921 he was a plumber.

Looking in the 1925 telephone directories there are Liverpool numbers listed for the Economic Electric Company (in Birkenhead and Warrington), Economic Refrigeration Company in Bootle, and the Economic Tyre Depot in Duke Street. None of the listed premises is in Garston. I also checked 1938 Kellys - by that time the Electric company (they were electrical engineers) had an office in Dale Street but otherwise there's not much to add from that source.  The 1911 phone book lists the Economic Life Assurance Company in Castle Street. and the Economic Supply Club in Fountains Road, and the Economic Cafe in Tithebarn Street as well as the  Economic Electric Company which then had an office in South Castle Street.

Thanks for that information, it would seem that 'Economic' was a popular name at that time then.  Were the kellys directories printed each year?  Presumably they would be printed  a year in leau or so would they? I can only remember Garston for the Gas Works!

Thank you.

I think Kellys is/was an annual publication  - a lookup in Liverpool public libraries might find one for 1921

hi.........the economic was the nickname for a very large housing estate in allerton,liverpool.......my mothers family moved there when it was built...about 1920`s....it was nicknamed "the economic"...because of the economic way in which liverpool corporation constructed the houses.....the majority of people who moved into these houses were large families from garston....my mum had 7 sisters and 2 brothers....10 children and living in a 2 up 2 down in garston.....she said that when they moved to their new house on the "economic",it was like winning the pools.....they all had massive long gardens, which were very often turned into allotments....this estate is still very much in use....its 1 mile from me (i`m in garston)..and i know all the road addresses on the economic.....if you could post the address i`ll probably know it......purlin,......on the edge of the estate was a maintenance depot for corpy maintenance men ,which only closed about 10 yrs ago.your plumber was probably based there.......the estate was probably classed as garston in the 1920`s....but its now classed as allerton.....regards.....allan

You beat me to it, Allan. My mum's friend lived on the Economic (by the Cenotaph, Long Lane). We always thought of the people on that estate as being 'posh', a bit above those of us 'under the bridge'. The rents on the Economic were higher than ours - mum's friend was married to a policeman, so could afford a bit more than we could.

I don't live in Liverpool now, but have heard that one of my son's friends has recently bought a house on the estate, so I expect quite a lot of the property is privately owned now?

Happy Christmas all!
Lesley

thanks for those replies, don't know why i haven't seen them earlier than this!

theres no particular address in the diary, its just entered as 'working at the economic garston'.  never thought about it being a housing estate, just assumed it must be a factory.  one of the firms he worked for was called stotts, don't know if he was working for them at that time or later.  he seemed to move around the country quite a bit on government contract work.

thanks for that information sorry i hadn't seen it before.

regards

Stotts was the electrical contractor who installed the electrics on new Liverpool Corporation housing estates....when I was serving my time as a joiner from 1966-1971 , Stotts were still the electrical contractors...they may still be going...try and look them up on 192.com...you never know...so anyway,he was either an electrician or an electricians mate...regards...allan

Stotts could well have also been a plumbing contractors at the time of the economic construction and later just concentrated on electrics....My MUM moved to the economic as a little girl and she was born in 1927 so I presume we are talking about 1935 ish....over 70 years ago.......did you check whether stotts are still contracting ???...allan

hi allan,  yes your right, we are talking 1930 ish. the diary pages have been ripped out at some time and whoever did it didnt think to save the dates!  but it has to be middle 1930's i reckon.

i havent been able to locate stotts,  they may well have been general contractors i suppose  that would explain it.

Has anyone any information about the 'Economic' in Garston liverpool.  Was it a factory?  I have a relative who according to a diary, worked at the Economic during 1921 he was a plumber.

The Garston Historical Society has a publication on the Economic Housing Estate which is partly in Allerton and partly in Garston. The dividing line being roughly the railway line

I think it should be                          .org.uk and not co.uk

Fascinating reading all this, right this moment!  I am researching my husband's Liverpool tree and have tracked down some Irish.  What a surprise!

Having forked out the exorbitant cost of an image of the 1921 Census, I have found a great uncle of his who was an out of work joiner for ... Economic Building Company in Allerton.  I suppose he was between jobs but still in their employ.

More joiners and carpenters than one can shake a stick at and too many Thomases.  No imagination in his family - or respect for their ancestors, maybe.
