I don't know whether you have come across George Spencely who married Margaret Stephenson from Terrington, Yorks on 28th Apr 1823.  They had a daughter Charity.  Margaret Stephenson is a sister to one of my ancestors.  I found their details on the 2% 1851 Census for Ganthorpe (on the internet), living with Margaret's father David, who is my gt gt gt gt grandfather.

Please let me know if you think he may be connected.
I am interested to know what happened to Charity.

Ceejay.

Thanks Mike,

George Spencely was age 50 on the 1851 Census and living at the Brick and Tile Works at Ganthorpe.  His birthplace is given as Hutton, Yorks.

I have the 1851 Census index which tells me that there is a Joseph Spencely born at Ganthorpe aged 26 - I think!
I will transcribe the entries for all the Spenceleys with the Folio refs and get them to you for the weekend.

Best wishes,  Ceejay.

Somewhere in my archives I have got the Terrington area parish registers from the 1500s.  Would you like me to find any Spenceleys on there?  It may take me a little while but I would be quite happy to let you have the info.

Hope this all helps!  Do you have any information about Charity's mother Margaret Stephenson?  Also, who did Charity marry?  I have tried to look up the marriage on the FreeBMD site but to no avail!

Best wishes,  Ceejay.

Yes please, any Spenceleys are gratefully accepted.

I only have the record of Charity's entry in the index but you could get a copy of the certificate from the register office with those details.

Mike, do you have Joseph Spencely who married Elizabeth Sherwood in Lastingham in Yorkshire in 1833, by any chance? I have 4 children born in England and the names of 2 born in Canada. I am trying to puzzle out the marriage and children of 1 daughter, Jane, b about 1839, who seems to have married somebody named Potter and then George Barry. I'll explain the mystery if it is of interest to you.

My great, great, great grandad is Joseph Spenceley, and he was born in 1824.

I'm wondering if it if his name on the 1851 Census - it would put him at the right age.

I'm having trouble finding out who he was married to and any further info.  I was led to believe the spelling of the last name changed around this time.
Joseph had two children that I know of: Hornsey & George Spenceley.  George (b 1863, d 1908) married Eleanor Fanny Idell in 1894.
George and Eleanor had one child that I know of: Joseph Earl Spenceley (b 1897, d 1963).
Joseph married in Catherine Prest in 1913 and had 9 children I know of including my grandmother Veronica Spencley (b1914).
Any help tracing this back further would be appreciated.

This family tree is way too familiar.

My Mother was Catherine Eudora Spencley born Jan, 1918.  she had a sister Veronica "Ronnie" and at least 6 other siblings, Raymond, Tommy, Jim, Elizabeth, Arthur and George.  Their parents were Earle Spencley and Catherine "Kate"Prest.  Earle's father was George and his father Joseph.

Are we cousins?  If you think so we need to get in touch.
