There has been a bit of discussion recently about Huguenot ancestors - how about a dedicated section for this topic? It's an area of genealogy which generating increasing interest and I'm sure would be well used.

Good idea Billie
Finding it very hard to trace any of my lot.

Excellent suggestion Billy - might help me track down mine.

Excellent idea. I have been told by other family I have Huguenot ancestors.
I also find it difficult to go through all the Rootschat threads covering Huguenots.
If not a dedicated section maybe "upper management" can link the threads together for us.

Some months ago emailed the Huguenot Library, in London, through their web site http://www.huguenotsociety.org.uk asking what the best way forward was regarding my possible Huguenot ancestors and I got a very helpful reply, and they also did a quick look-up. My surname did indeed appear in their Quarto Series, which are transcriptions of original documents published by the Huguenot Society of Gt. Britain & Ireland, and the volume numbers, together with a list of publications and various information sheets were posted to me. Unfortunately I do not live near London, which makes it difficult to check out these documents.
The Society produces a twice yearly publication, Huguenot Families - £5 per year subscription, and also a CD covering the first 10 editions of this publication at a cost of £15. I bought the CD and it contains a lot of interesting stuff but it takes a bit of wading through and I have to say I have not found much to help me as yet :-\

I too don't live near London. Would be a long trip across the pond to visit the library.
As I said in a previous post I believe (through family lore) that I also have Huguenot ancestry. I am thinking of e mailing the Huguenot Library to see if they can confirm / deny my family Huguenot connection.
In regards to the CD, I was wondering what kinds of "interesting" stuff / information is included? Do you think the CD is worth purchasing?
Thanks for your thoughts.

This thread was really useful http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,113939.0.html
Liverpool Annie was particularly helpful :)

Hi yn9man,
For starters I would certainly email the Huguenot Society - I found them really helpful.
Regarding the CD - it contains volumes 1-10 of the Society's magazine in pdf format. Volume 1 consists of 32 pages. It is very scholarly in tone and assumes that you already have a good knowledge of the Huguenots - why they left France, Edict of Nantes etc. and as I mentioned it takes a bit of wading through :-\. Each volume contains a list of Huguenot families who originally made the move from France to the U.K. and in some cases these contain quite a lot of information about the families but there is no index so they are not name searchable. There is a 'Research in Progress' section and a lot of interesting articles which give an insight of what life was like, for example Vol 1 contains an article on the Huguenots in Faversham Kent and gives a list of names, also it mentions some of the Huguenot marriages in Fleet Prison.
As to whether it is worth parting with the £££s - it is not much use if you simply want to confirm you may have Huguenot ancestry but if you are interested in Huguenot history and sources then it is useful. I have yet to find any mention of the name I am looking for, but I have not yet found enough time to wade through it all :'( :'(
Hope this helps :)

HI Maggie -
Thanks for responding to my post.
I don't have a good knowledge of the Huguenots. I have just started reading articles and researching Huguenots via the web. My Huguenot knowledge is very basic. As part of tracing my family I am trying to learn as much social history as I can. It has been an eye opening experience. The Huguenots are just another part of that social history.
I doubt I will find a specific reference to my family but one never knows.
Thanks again for taking time to reply to my questions. Much appreciated and good luck with your research.

Hi again yn9man,
I understand what you mean as I am also on a learning curve with the Huguenots. If it would help, if you could let me have your potential Huguenot name, either here or in a PM, whilst I am looking at the volumes for my people I could watch out for yours :)
As I said, there is no index so there is no quick way but I can keep my eyes open for any mention.
The best of luck in your hunting.
Regards,
Maggie

I have Huguenot ancestors: Noquet, Poulain, Silk, Nials, among others. I would like a separate section too. :-*

Hi Maggie,
My learning curve is what one would say "extremely steep". :)
The surname I am interested in for the possible Huguenot is JORY. I have also have seen it spelled other ways such as JORRY, JORIAY, JURRA, JURY.
Thanks for "hunting" for me. :) :) :)

Hi yn9man,
I cannot promise it will happen quickly but I will watch out for any mention of JORY and alternatives.
MrsLizzy - Would you like me to keep an eye open for your names also? As I said in an earlier post, there is no name index so it's a case of wading through it all starting with page 1, volume 1, but as long as you are not in any rush I am very happy to look :D :D .
Regards,
Maggie

Hi maggie -
Keep forgetting to mention what a great looking dog you have in your avatar.
My Dad believes (thinks) that the original spelling of Jory was probably JORET. When pressed for reasons he remembers his grandmother mentioning the family name but doesn't have any specifics.
Thanks again for "watching out" for the Jory surname and various spellings.

Hi yn9man,
I have passed on your lovely compliment to Kallie and she says thanks so much ;D. Like I say under her pic - she knows HER roots back to the 'nth' generation!
If I get chance this evening I am going to attack volume 1 of the Huguenots - probably more interesting than the telly - so keep your fingers crossed that I find lots of useful references to the Jor(y)(et) and Sim(m)on(e)(a)(i)t(t)(e) names :-\ ::) :-\
Maggie

Thanks Maggie that would be lovely! Give Kallie lots of kisses from me, won't you? My mum has a collie named Callie - after an online friend of mine in Florida who does a lot of dog fostering and became our Callie's sort of godmother - or should I say "dog" mother?? ;D ;D

Hi yn9man & MrsLizzy,
Here is an update on the Huguenot Hunting 8)
I have gone through Volumes 1-6 and so far and yn9man, I am sad to report that I have not come across any mention of JORY or any of the derivatives. Perhaps I will have more success in Vols. 7-10 ;)
MrsLizzy - I have had a bit more success with Poulain, Noquet and possibly NAILS and I will send you the details in a PM.
Regards,
Maggie
