I am looking for Eleanor Roberts b c 1825 in Monmouthshire
In 1849 she married John Purmel from Berkeley in either Gloucester or Dursley districts (some confusion of the records I'm afraid)
Her family may have been in Gloucestershire by 41 as she was married in the county
I have her husband inthe 51 census living in Chepstow but not with Eleanor. Maybe she used her maiden name in the 51 census. In October 1852 they were at 36 Long Street, Gloucester.
thanks

Hi Jono
Do you have information about her family - father's name and occupation from the marriage cert maybe?
There is an Eleanor of the right age in Frampton on Severn (not far from where yours should be), but it says born in county. What other censuses do you have her on?
kind regards, Arranroots ;)

p.s. is the John you haved found the one in Horse Lane, Chepstow in 1851? He is a joiner and it says unmarried.
???

I can find a marriage for Eleanor ROBERTS in Gloucester in 1849, but there is no corresponding entry for her "husband". Edit: John Gizzard (?) PURNELL might be on the same page - I see what you mean about confusion!
This seems to be them in 1861, which means the 1851 John could be right.
RG9 Piece 1766 Folio 46 Page 50
John PURNELL H M 35 - carpenter & Joiner - Glos Berkeley
Eleaner W M 40 - Monmouth Risca
Charles H son 8 - scholar - Glos Gloster
Address: Blackfriars Square, Gloucester St Mary de Crypt

Outside chance for Eleanor in 1851 - the surnames on the page are virtually illegible, due to handwriting. It would not be unusual for a servant to be given as unmarried when she was.
1851 census HO107/1955/63/35
Eleanor POWELE serv U 28 - house servant - Monmouthshire
In household of Major William (illegible) in Westbury on Trym

This might be better
1851 census HO107/2466/457/13
Ellen PURNELL Wife Mar 30 - dress maker - Newport Mon
Address: Powell St, Swansea, Glamorgan
She is alone in her household, but since the enumerator doesn't use house numbers it is difficult to say whether she is in a shared household.

Thanks everyone
The problem is with the marriage as we know that John purnell married an Eleanor.
The Free BMd search shows the problem

Looks like the pages 383 and 393 got mixed up
I have already ordered John Purnell m Eleanor King 11 383 and the GRO rejected it.
Can I order a certificate for only John Purnell and will that show me his wife's name?
Thanks for any suggestions

PS yes the John is in Chepstow in 51.
Any luck with finding Eleanor Roberts in 41?

Hi Jono
Yes, you can order the cert that way, no problem.
Alternatively you could order a cert for their son and that would give the mother's maiden name. You could then choose a matching marriage.
kind regards, Arranroots ;)
p.s. don't worry - if we had found the 1841 for Eleanor we would have posted it by now! She is elusive!!

Hi all
I now have the wedding cert of Eleanor and John Purnell. She was living at Back Lane Gloucester in August 1849 and her father was Thomas Roberts, milkman. Can anyone find her in Gloucester in 1841?
