Title: MacPherson,Banffshire
Post by: robertmcpherson01 on Sunday 18 February 07 23:53 GMT (UK)
I am hoping for some assistance , I have stumbled across James Macpherson (b) 1821 in Banffshire. (d) 1880 in Ontario Canada. In 1851 it appears he was still in Scotland living in Banffshire. Can one with access look up the census for me. He was married to Agnes (b)1827. Although we concider ourfamilies cousins ,We are trying to tie in with one of the Three branches of the MacPherson Families. Thank you for your help.

If you go to:  www.freecen.org.uk and search the database, you'll find that the 1851 Census of Banffshire has three James McPhersons aged 31, 30, and 29.  The one aged 30 would fit your James born 1821.  He is described as married, born Boyndie, Banffshire, and a Farm Labourer working at Mill of Kinnairdy, Marnoch for the Miller & Farmer, Alexander Innes.

Hello
I also have Mcphersons that I am trying to trace in Banffshire.

I have a Christina/Christian Mcpherson born circa 1801 in Banff according to the 1851 census. She married William Hendry in Cairnie by Huntly in 1818 and from there they moved to Marnoch and then to Aberdeen. She was widowed between 1841 and 1851 but I have no knowledge of how to find out how her husband William died or when this may have happened as I am new to researching in Scotland and believe that public records did not exist at this time.

After 1861 I cannot find her or any of her family but I know that my line came to London ( David Hendry born circa 1841) and settled there.

Any advice on finding out more about this family would be useful and appreciated.

How sure are you that James McPherson was born in 1821 and his wife Agnes in  1827 ?  I only ask because I've now found a marriage between a James McPherson and an Agnes Taylor on 16 Dec 1848 at Inverkeithny, Banffshire.  James appears to be the son of Alexander McPherson and Margaret Simpson, born 26 May 1829 Inverkeithny and Agnes, the daughter of Ernest Taylor and Isobel McKenzie, born 28 Oct 1826 Alford, Aberdeenshire.
The 1851 Census of Banffshire has this:-

Oldmill, Rothiemay.
James McPherson  22  Head  Farmer 54 acres, employing 2 Labourers.
born Inverkeithny.
Agnes McPherson  24  Wife  born Alford, Aberdeenshire.
James McPherson    2  Son  born Fordyce, Banffshire.
Alexander McPherson  1 month  born Rothiemay, Banffshire.
Jessie McPherson  16  House Servant  born Inverkeithny, Banffshire.
Robert CRAN  23  Farm Labourer  born Inverkeithny.

I believe Jessie to be a niece of James and Agnes.
Please let me know what you think.

In the Ontario Canada Census 1871, Wentworth South,
James Macpherson was 42and Agnes(Taylor) Macpherson
was 44. It shows their birth years as James 1829 Banffshire and Agnes 1827. James died in 1880 and Agnes 1884. Their children in 1871 were Agnes b.1855,Frank 1857,Elizabeth 1860 Margret 1863, Mary 1865, William 1866, Robert 1869, Thomas 1870, and Isabelle age 16 months. James died in 1880 and Agnes d.1884. We have historians within the Macpherson association there in Scotland and here in the U.S I plan on contacting them to see what information they may have as well. William Alan. Macpherson (Cluny) of Blairgowrie is a really close friend and cousin to us as well as Sandy and Catherine Macpherson of Edinburgh. But so far all records we have come across have proved to be good. It does sound like we are looking at the same Macpherson Taylor, My GrandFather was Frank . On his U.S. naturalization papers that my aunt  had showed Frank born Ontario Canada 1857, Father, James and Mother, Agnes of Scotland., Language spoken, Gaelic.

Does the census say where Agnes Jr was born in 1855?

I have done a little more research on your McPherson family.  Alexander McPherson  was twice married, 1) 14 Jun 1817, Forgue, Aberdeenshire, Margaret Simpson.  They had 8 children:
Janet 1816
Margaret 1819, Huntly, Aberdeenshire
Isobel 1822, Forgue, Aberdeenshire
The remaining 5 were all born at Inverkeithny, Banffshire:
Jane 1824
Alexander 1826
Mary 1827
James 1829(died 27 Mar 1880, Wentworth, Ontario aged 51)
Francis 1830
I could not find where Alexander's second marriage took place but it was to Janet Barnet (b. circa 1813 Drumblade, Aberdeenshire).  They went on to have 4 children all born at Inverkeithny:
Jessie/Janet 1834
Ann 1839
Helen 1841
John 1843
Alexander (Snr) died at Inverkeithny in 1870 aged 78. He would have actually been 74 as he was born 8 Apr 1796 at Huntly.
James (1829) married Agnes Taylor at Inverkeithny on 16 Dec 1848 and they had 10 of a family:
James 1849 Fordyce, Banffshire
Alexander 1851 Rothiemay, Banffshire
Agnes 1855 (Ontario ?)
Frank 1857 Ontario
Elizabeth 1860
Margaret 1863
William 1866
Robert 1869
Thomas 1870
Isabella 1871

The parents of Alexander (1796) were John McPherson and Margaret Young who married at Huntly, Aberdeenshire on 7 Oct 1788.  John's parents may have been William McPherson and Jean Wilson, with a son John having been born at Cairnie, by Huntly on 29 Mar 1763.
I hope that you are able to assimilate all this, and I wish you good luck with your research.

I have a Marjory McPherson Barclay, born 8/3/1877 in Elgin, Banffshire, her parents Alexander Barclay & Ann Forbes.

Marjory married an Andrew Cardno from Fraserburgh, in January 1907.  They had one children Herbert b 1909, then emigrated to Hamilton Ontario in Canada 1910.  Had 3 other children born in Canada.

Unsure where the "McPherson" fits in,   does any of the above names tie in with anyone looking in McPherson's from Banffshire.

This is the first time I've done this so hope I do it correctly. I've just read this bit
The parents of Alexander (1796) were John McPherson and Margaret Young who married at Huntly, Aberdeenshire on 7 Oct 1788.  John's parents may have been William McPherson and Jean Wilson, with a son John having been born at Cairnie, by Huntly on 29 Mar 1763.
and have to tell you that I'm sorry but John's parents weren't William McPherson and Jean Wilson. Their John married Anne Wilson and never left Cairnie, Aberdeenshire. If anyone wants any information on the Cairnie McPhersons I've quite a tree.

I am hoping you can help.

I am looking for an Ann McPherson born around 1805 Aberdeen. Someone has said that her parents were John McPherson and Anne Wilson Banff but this does not seem to fit in with her place of birth. Thanks
