Title: 1851 Census - Whitechapel - Collins
Post by: Liam on Tuesday 23 November 04 17:26 GMT (UK)
Would anyone be able to look up a Daniel Collins, aged about 19, living at 4 Crown Court, Whitechapel in 1851?

If it's not too big an ask I'd love any info for any other Collins who may be lurking in nearby households, that might provide a big clue that will help me narrow down where in Ireland they came from.

I only have a name index for Whitechapel.  Daniel Collins seems to be a popular name in Whitechapel.  Here are some references for someone to check.

HO 107/1545 folio 453  Daniel aged 16
HO 107/1546 folio 295
Daniel age 16 and Daniel aged 20
Danl aged 23 folio 452

Hope this helps

Many thanks for that, hopefully someone will be able to take it from there. I know he was here in 1856 and living at 4 Crown Court, from his marriage certificate. Both bride and groom's fathers were dead when they married so I'm speculating that he and any family were refugees from the Potato Famine and so may well have been in London by 1851.

Any further info appreciated, even if it's a long shot.

Hello, and apologies for the delay in replying,

Yes I am still looking for the information so I'd be grateful for any help anyone could give, even if it's just to rule out 4 Crown Court as a possible address.

Hello,

The most likely one appears to be

11 Johnsons Back Change (Goodmans Fields) Whitechapel

Daniel Collins, lodger, unmarried, 20, Tailor, b. Cork

He is lodging either other folk from Cork, all Tailors.

HO107/1546
Folio: 362
Page: 36

Not sure if that helps  :)

Regards
Jonathan

The age and the birthplace are consistent with the info I have but I'm still short of enough info to say anything other than 'maybe'. Many thanks for your help though, it gives me a 'possible' at least and I'll just have to keep chipping away at it.

Checked all of Crown Court and No 4 is written down 3 times with different families living there?  However more no COLLINS  or BRAIDS.

Many thanks for looking. That does rule it out as Daniel Collins' address at least, and Robert Collins can go on the list of possible relatives too.

To explain the multiple entries, I'd guess the house was divided up by rooms and they crammed in as many as possible. They don't seem to have cared much for fire safety and healthy living conditions in those times, as I expect you know.

Note for the moderator: I'm happy to close this thread now as it's answered my main query about 4 Crown Court.
