I have hoofed about the net a bit and found some info about the regiment itself - history etc. but cannot find a list of names of those who served. Is this possible online? or is there a paper resource one can consult?
Any hint/help in the right direction appreciated.

For those that survived WW1 - the likelihood of finding service records is pretty dim:
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/researchguidesindex.asp
If your research concerns family members, it might be worth your while contacting the main local library for the area in which they were living at the time to see what info, if any, they hold on local soldiers. Details of enlistments were often published in the local newspapers - local workplaces, schools etc. often kept information on employees and pupils, again sometimes published in the local newspapers.
For war graves/memorials see: http://www.cwgc.org
Don't know if this helps as not sure exactly what you are looking for - you won't find complete lists of enlistment for a particular regiment WW1 as far as I am aware.

Thanks. Knew it wouldn't be easy, just didn't know where to start as never done any military research before.

Forgot to mention - probably the most complete record of WW1 soldiers is the medal rolls:
http://www.documentsonline.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
Paying for the actual image probably might not give you much more info than what is in the index but will give medals awarded.
If you soldier was promoted or received any meritous awards then it is probably worthwhile consulting the archive of the London Gazette - fortunately online - though easier if it wasn't a common name. I found my gt grandfather received the Military Medal via this link!
http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/index.asp?webType=0
A tip - if you've not used this before - full names are not always given - sometimes initials only - and sometimes as SMITH A A etc.. and regiments are sometimes abbreviated.
Good Luck

I am interested also in lists of those who served in Boer War, especially Royal Irish Rifles so I was drawn to item. I agree with Annie's recommendation. Through this site you can access shipping lists of regiments going to and returning from South Africa. There are however, no lists of those serving in regiments although you will find names of officers and some others. It is a tremendous source for getting dates and ships for individual regiments.

Archives have War diaries for regiments and battalions
http://www.documentsonline.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
then click on Browse Categories >Other records and choose Military & Defence
Then search or browse within this for the war diaries.
Apparently you can buy them - but you can read them on line I heard - haven't tried that yet !!!

hi , this photo includes a man called john tracey who later died during ww1 in flanders.would you have any details to go with the names?this man was a relative of my brother in law who would love to know a little more about his uncles ,both of them were named john tracey.
regards anne

jonathan, which lancashire regt was he in,there were three, the south, east and loyal north lancs regts.
anne,i have looked at your picture,i can see a man from the manchester regt, one from the east lancs regt and another from the lancashire fusiliers, that means they are men from the 42nd east lancs division, they were all territorial units in this division,i cant find john in any lancashire regt,do you have any more info about him, age, place of birth, where he lived, etc anything that might help, mack
-
Hi mack, thanks for the info' re;photo of lancashire brigade e.t.c.
john was from Dublin ,most likely Rathmines area like younger siblings.
his fathers name was also john(surprise surprise) ::) his parents married in 1874 and as he was their first child i'd say he was born soon after that .it would make him in his mid to late 30s when he died in W.W1.
John is the man on the bottom right of the photo,as you can see not much detail there to help.thanks again, regards,Anne

hi I've been looking through the info that everybody as put on here and was wondering if you can help me with finding more out on frank corbett the only things I know are that he was honourably discharged from the South Lancashire Regiment on the 24 may 1919 if anyone can help with this or even a photo with him on that would be great all the stuff that I've found out about him follows thank you very much:
According to his Medal Index Card he was
13417 Sergeant in the South Lancashire Regiment, later 389023 Sergeant in Labour Corps, so he could have been wounded at some point
Wendi
Description
Medal card of Corbett, Frank
Corps Regiment No Rank
South Lancashire Regiment 13417 Sergeant
Labour Corps 389023
Date 1914-1920
The labour corps was formed in 1917, he could have been transferred if his fitness level had been downgraded, due to wounds (as Wendi says) or sickness or perhaps the need for experienced NCO's

I am a bit confused, where does it say he was discharged from the South Lancs in 1919? His medal index card says he was transferred to the Labour Corps, and he was awarded a SWB (Silver War Badge) which usually means he was discharged during the war itself.
Do you have other information, as there are a few Frank Corbetts. Also, can you provide an approximate date of birth and say where he was from?
Ken

Hi
I don't know if this is still an active thread but I found the Friends of then The Museums of the Queens Lancashire Regiment, at Fulwood Barracks , Preston, PR2 8AA really helpful when I was researching my ancester who died at Pietermaritzberg after the relief of Ladysmith. I only had information from a barely legible marrige certificate and they were really good.
Unfortunately it didn't help me get any further because they could not give me either his birth date or his birthplace.
Hope this helps
Aly :)
