The only other ways are to go to the local registrars office where the death was registered, The archives in Edinburgh or if you are nearer Glasgow - visit Park Circus.

Unfortunately in circumstances like that you may face some problems, especially if your father had a relatively common surname.

If you have a look at http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/bdm.html , this explains the procedure for applying for a copy of the certificate and the charges involved. Over and above the charge for the certificate they can search the records and currently charge £5 for a 5 year search area. (the link helps explain it all)

I see from your other thread that your fathers surname was relatively uncommon - that should make your search slightly easier. If you read the link I have provided it may give you some insight as to the best way to proceed and whether you wish to try and send for a certificate.

Hi Pixie,

There is a birth of a male "Boak*" in 1906 in St Giles , Edinburgh, Midlothian, not your dad, Stanley but maybe a brother.

Andrew Boak married Nellie Jones at St Giles Parish, Edinburgh GROS 685/04 0845,
So not the Nan Scott, we were looking for.

In the 1901 census there are 14 "Boak" in Edinburgh district. Not too many, but would need mor proof before spending 5 credits on the 14.

Still trying!
