Title: Attleborough
Post by: Maggott on Tuesday 13 February 07 20:33 GMT (UK)
I'm researching the Smith (!) family who lived in Attleborough from the early 19th century - Samuel, Edward, Robert & the rest.  They were carpenters & some of them moved to London in the 1860s.  I wonder of anyone else has come across them - Maggott

Hello Maggott and welcome to Rootschat, if you can post some details of Samuel, Edward and Robert etc, like dates of birth and where born, really as much as you can with the name like Smith.  we can take a look around the 41 and 51 census for Norfolk.

Hi Patrish & thank you for your welcome.  C41 & 51 give the Smiths as you would expect - settled down with their own families.  The mystery are the 'old folks' - parents Samuel & Sarah.  On C51 they give bithplaces as Attlebrough & Norwich respectively.  So was he s of William & Mary Smith bap 1787 & was she the Sarah Pigg who m Samuel Smith in Norwich 1815?? I've been brick-walled on this for years, so here's hoping... Maggott

As this is all pre census and registration the only way to find out is either the IGI or checking the parish records, if the births could be found of any of Samuel and Sarah's children it might give the mothers maiden name but not always in the early records.   Can you please post the reference for the  1851 for them so that I can take a look.

Patrish.

I have sent a PM, But is it possible that both Samuels Smiths mentioned on the 1851 are father and son. as it seems they are both Carpenters.
Looking through the Attleborough registers on CD of Attleborough there are many many Smiths in Attleborough. so reallly need a little more to go on..
You need to start from your family connection and work back to the 1851 to gain which one of the children you are related to..

regards

Samuel son of Samuel Smith ( carpenter) & Mary, May 27th 1787.....

Hi Blue Spirit & thank you for your message.  I've found IGI s bit too vague for this one - too many Smiths in Attleborough, & the transcripts of the records don't (I think) give mothers' maiden names for the period I want - I went cross-eyed reading the print version.
My ancestor was Edward Smith - in C1851 moved to Watton with his new wife.  Samuel s of Samuel & Sarah is his older brother, & I think he continued (?with the family business) in Attlebrough.  Younger boys went to London  Samuel Sr died in the workhouse - from the sound of it he had a stroke.  I'm ok from there on but what, oh what was Sarah's maiden name?? Or, indeed, the maiden name of Samuel Sr's mother???

Sorry Maggott but since I am new to this I was unable to reply to your personal message about the Hedges so I have resorted to replying by this method. You said that Thomas, James, William and Job were all brothers and were the sons of William Hedges. The problem seems to be proving this although the evidence to date seems to suggest that it is true. What evidence do you have to support this?

Peter

The only one i could find which might fit in is below, but that depends on birth of younger children.
Samuel Smith  to Sarah Barker  4th Jan 1814  at Larling,Larling is only a short distance from Attleborough,  if this is he and she, let me know as i have the registers for Larling...

Hi Blue Spirit and many thanks for your post -it certainly cheered up a gloomy day.  I was still looking for Samuel's Sarah & up 'til now I'd drawn a blank, so Miss Barker is a find and a half.  Sam n' Sarah's first child was b 1818, so the dates are OK....if you could have a look at the Larling records I should be very grateful indeed.
I learned recently that a Robert Smith of Old Buckenham  left a Samuel Smith money for an appenticeship as a carpenter-dates OK for my Samuel & one of his boys was called Robert.  Not evidence, I know, but worth having a look at.
Many thanks for your help
