Hi, if you are sure they were buried, there are a few: Holy Trinity(Fifield Cl,Nuneaton CV11 4TS),Attleborough Methodist (Park Av,Nuneaton CV11 4PQ) St Mary The Virgin C of E (The Vicarage,Coventry Rd,Nuneaton CV11 4NJ) these are the closest to the Attleborough area of Nuneaton.

We only have one crematorium on Heart of England Way,Nuneaton CV11 6WZ.

According to the 1901 Surname Index for Nuneaton they lived at Gorse Barn Cottage, am assuming it no longer exists as i cant seem to find anything about where that was exactly.

Hope this helps.

Carol

There is also a church as you go towards Attleborough called All Saints, not sure what denomination it is though.

Good Luck.

As Online Parish Clerk for Chilvers Coton I can do look ups for Chilvers Coton church but prefer not to do blanket searches. I will see what I can find over the weekend.
Al

PS. Will also have a look at Attleborough PC and Nuneaton as time permits.

Hi pcjr, have started looking today. Went through Nuneaton Parish Church records from 1901 to 1940 and came up with only the following

Mary Ellen Smith aged 40 of 5, Bridge Street, Nuneaton buried 6 January 1906
Louisa Ellen Smith aged 69 of 52, College Street, Chilvers Coton, buried 19 March 1920. That must be somewhere near.
John Smith aged 69 of Sunnydale, High Street, Nuneaton, buried 31 October 1918.
I also trawled through Attleborough Parish Church burials from the same period without success.
I will check Coton tomorrow.
I would have thought you would have some idea of the years when they died and some clue as to where in the town they lived, havn't you any relatives who you could tap?

I will see if I can find anything out, I know that some of the Smiths ended up in the Stockingford area, but not sure if John and Ellen did. I know that Ellen was born in 1852 and John about the same I think. Will check through when I have more time.  One of their sons, Edden Smith died in the 1950's I think it was.....

The John Smith I sent would have been born in the early 1850s.

just looked at my tree and it was c1854 in Woodsford, Northamptonshire, not that this is much help as they moved to Nuneaton. trouble is, Smith is common enough, but John smith has given me so much trouble lol

If you have all the earlier stuff how come you have been able to trace them without the later?
Anyway, have trawled through Chilvers Coton anf have only found  the following -
Emma Smith, 21, Bracebridge Street, Nuneaton Buried 21 December 1916 aged 76 which is a bit out.
More interesting is
John Smith of 13, Canalside, Bridge Street, Chilvers Coton, buried 22 March 1927 aged 73, this to me is spot on the 1854 birth date, what do you think.

In the Electors list of 1902 the only John Smith listed in Attleborough is of Upper Park Street formerly of Tennant Street.
Anything ring a bell?

my husband never knew his grandparents and we only got their names from his dad's birth certificate, from that we worked backwards but being a name like Smith it has been quite difficult. It does sound like you may have found John Smith, I wonder if they stayed in Nuneaton at all or moved back to Northamptonshire? I did find a few Ellen Smith's in the Northamptonshire area, there's no-one left that we can ask information about the Smith's unfortunately

I appreciate your difficulty, I came across quite a few others by the same name but only sent those nearest to your dates. I will check further Electoral lists and look at Stockingford burials although I believe they only did them to about 1915

The John Smith in the 1902 List of Electors is not your ancestor.
I have looked at the 1901 entry and Gorse Barn Cottage is still extant, or was last time I walked across that way. Nowdays it is called Gorse Cottage Farm and it is situated about a mile from Attleborough village and is at White Stone next to Nuneaton Golf Course. You will find it on the 1890 map on http://www.old-maps.co.uk/oldmaps/index_external.jsp?easting=443500&northing=288500
In 1891 census it was occupied by others from Northamptonshire, i wonder if there as a link. Looking at the children, Edith was born at Hellidon? My ancestors came from there. Was she married in Nuneaton?
I will keep looking, the 1911 census will probably answer a lot of your problems.

John and ellen were married in Brackley, Oxfordshire in 1875, one of their sons Edden (my husband's grandad) was born in Stratford upon Avon in 1891, Wimpstone Whitchurch. I can't look up the censuses but just did a search for his sister, Edith Elizabeth Smith born 1888 in Eydon Northants and see one for 1901 down towards the bottom of the page, says she was born Northants now living in Warks, I thought I had it somewhere but can't find it at the moment! Thanks for your help

So where was 'Edden' in 1901.
The 1901 shows the family as
John Smith-45-Farm labourer-b Woodford, Northants
Ellen Smith-49-b Eydon, Northants
George Smith-16-Ag Lab-b Eydon
William-14-Ag Lab-b Eydon
Edith-13-b Hellidon, Northants
John-20-Ag Lab-b Eydon

have no idea at all!! This was the problem we had, he is nowhere on the censuses!! We only know of him because of ordering his dad's birth Certificate, Edden Smith and Ethel North were his parents, then we ordered Edden's birth certificate and it showed us that John Smith and Ellen Edden were hisparents!!

A mystery then, it is unusual as when a surname is used in families it usually follows another but obviously if you only have the one Christian name on his birth certificate then we must discount that theory. I have often found that when a young lad is missing off a census they are usually found somewhere nearby working and living with someone else, a sort of apprenticeship.
Good look with your further research, Al

Did you have an address on your dad's birth certificate Mintola? I have just spent two hours going through the electors lists for 1914 for Nuneaton and areas around and could not find Edden anywhere! Very elusive character I feel!
Could not find his marriage in five Parishes in Nuneaton either but there were other churches who came under Nuneaton in those days and we havn't got them here, also could have been Catholic or some other denomination or even a Register Office.

My fathers name was George Edden Smith (born 1915) as was his fathers. His father was born in 1884 in Brackley Northants. George seniors parents were John & Ellen Smith they had 6 other children Mary,John,James,William,Edith & Edden.
My mother was also a Smith as her father was my fathers fathers  brother.(Not illegal) although I do not know which of the brothers was her dad and I cannot rememer her mothers name.
My mother lived in Nuneaton with her 2 brothers Frederick & Reginald William John (who was known as Jack)

blueeyes, I just got your messages, you must be some cousin of my hubby's by the sound of it, was your mum Jean? Sorry for not replying to this topic I had not had any messages recently regarding it. There was an address on the birth certificate for Edden Smith, it was something like Wimpstone Whitchurch, which we passed on a recent visit to the Midlands, I am trying to work out the connection, but I have an idea who you may be, do you have a brother who lived with your mum?
