Title: 3rd Foot Guards
Post by: clare on Sunday 11 February 07 22:10 GMT (UK)
Hi,  Can anyone help me with any informatiom re;
Benjamin Suggitt,  he was in the 3rd Foot Guards  about 1800 to 1814   he was listed as a sodier living in
Arrow Alley in Portsoken Ward of London,   I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this regiment or how I could find any records, would be interesting to know if he was based in London or went overseas, & what war would have been going on at that time.
I believe the 3rd Foot Guards were formed primarily from the Scot's Guards,

3rd Foot Guards & Scots Guards are one and the same regiment.

1800-1814 was all about the Napoleonic Wars
1st Battn, 3rd Foot Guards were in Egypt, north Germany, Denmark, Portugal & Spain during this period as well England

2nd Battn fought in Holland, Portugal, Spain and the Waterloo campaign in 1815

hi clare
my 4xgreatgrandfathers brother served in the 3rd foot coldstream guards during the same period
i got his  service record from the national archives
this gives such information as
age, birthplace
pyhsical description, hieght hair eyes complexion
trade or proffesion
days served in a particular rank
places of service
demob details
and pension details
mine also states that they served in india gibraltar and malta
my ancester sgt george vardy was wounded at talavera
in 1809
there is a good account of the actions of the guards in this batle
in a new book called TALAVERA wellingtons early pennisula
victories 1808-09by peter edwards  published by www.crowood.com priced at 19.95 , think i got mine from
waterstones
its a very interesting read full of information
one passage of interest is that between 1827/30
the goverment sent letters to all former soldiers asking were they served what battles they fought ,if they were wounded etc
i presume that these would be held at the national archives
either in his service record or seperatly
i havnt one for george as he died feb 1827
i hope this is of some help
best regards gig

Hello Jenny,I am researching the Foot Guards at the moment,at TNA.I will have a look for you  on my next visit, although I can not find any records for the gentleman atm.
Portsoken Street is just north of the Tower of London,so he may of been based there
It will be end of March before I can give you any information.

Just to give you an idea,I got home from TNA yesterday and the soldiers that I found in the 1st Foot Guards do not show  up on the Napoleonic search resources.Which is the case with your chap.
This to me shows that it  is worth a hands on search at TNA.
So please be patient and hopefully in the next few weeks,I will have an answer.
It does take a long time to search, about 5 hours for one year of records, but I will give it my best shot,as it is something I love doing.
Lawrence.
PS Portsoken (mispelling) is a street that i used to drive through every day, sadly, all modern city buildings these days.It is just East of Fenchurch Street station, near the Minories, and im guessing a pretty rough place in its day.

Thank you so much again for the time it is costing you to do this,
so was mine in the 1st foot  and not the 3rd foot

I would love one day to be able to visit these places,  but it must have been hair raising at times for them  to live in the poorer parts of London,  but then maybe they knew no different,   wonder what they would think of our way of life
 Have a good day

He enlisted at the age of 24 in Skewsby Yorkshire...Surname spelt Suggett.
Invalided out of the army in May 1814,due to accidental injury of leg.He would have served in Spain against the forces of Napoleon.
He is described as 5ft 5inches,black hair and hazle eyes, with a brown complexion.
If you write to the Archivist for the Scots Guards at Birdcage  Walk, giving these details, they should be able to give you more info.
also, bare with me,i will find out what i can, over the nxt few months

Sorry to but in on this post but rather than start my own  ::)

I've got the following from "Find my Past" website:

Regimental Index 1806

First Name(s):Benjamin
Last Name:Whistance
Rank:Private
Enlistment Year:1805
Enlistment Month:Jan
Enlistment Day:25
Regiment:3rd Foot Guards
WO25/:876

Can anyone tell me where I might find any more information on Benjamin Whistance, he may be an ancestor of mine.

Thank you

Edit

Someone has given me the following information, and as "my" Benjamin would have been about 40 in 1805, it is more likely that this is the Benjamin above:

Quote
FindMyPast has an Army Service Record for a Benjamin Whistance, born Shrewsbury, aged 22 at date of attestation on 20 July 1815 - giving estimated date of birth of 1793. There are 9 images available

The records on Findmypast are for Benjamin Whistance, born Asson, Shropshire, served 64th Regiment 1815 to 1831. Age on discharge: 37

There are no records for the Benjamin on the 1806 index, serving in the 3rd Foot Guards. The records on FindMyPast came from the National Archives who got them from the departments looking after army pensions. So they only kept the service records of men awarded a pension.

However it is worth contacting the Scots Guards Archives as they may have kept a copy.

Hi Ken,

Many thanks for taking the time to reply.

From what you say it is not the same Benjamin as he'd have only been 11 in 1805; so perhaps the latter is "my" Benjamin. I'll try contacting the Scots Guards Archives as you suggest.

Cheers
