robert nisbet assaulted his wife ( hamilton snaddon ) and was taken to airdrie prison before removal to gartnaval asylum, then taken to hartwood hospital shotts where he remained until his death.
robert 'went mad ' after a mining accident at the pit where he worked.
could anyone suggest where i could search to find out more details about robert ,ie the pit accident, court case, medical records

A lot depends on when this happened but to start you off have a look at

is the online search facility for the NAS where you might find some of the court documents relating to the case .... although not many survived you may find some precognition interviews of witnesses. (PS This search facility is very slow)

the assault took place in february 1877.
he was in gartnavel in the 1881 census and transfered to hartwood in 1895.
i've yet to find his date of death & burial place.

It may have have been written about in the court report column of the Airdrie Advertiser, worth checking. Available on microfilm at Local Studies, Airdrie Library and if you can't get there the staff will conduct a search for you (for a fee).

I have searched the mining villages website, http://www.mining-villages.co.uk/5.html , but cannot find him mentioned. It is mostly fatalties that are recorded. There was 215 killed at Blantyre on 22nd Oct 1877, any chance he worked there and was suffering from what todat post traumatic stress.
30 Oct 1871 - 4 killed by explosion at Bartonholm
19 Jan 1874 – 3 killed by roof fall at Rosehall
25 Feb 1875 - 3 suffocated by fire at Dalharco Pit, Patna
17 July 1875 - 3 killed by explosion at Drumpellier Coatbridge
30 Sept 1876 – 5 killed by boiler explosion at Fordell
21 Mar 1876 – 4 crushed by pulley at Stravenhouse
23 Jan 1877 - 4 killed in flood at Home Farm, Lanarkshire
22 Oct 1877 - At least 215 killed at Blantyre
5 Mar 1878 - 6 killed in fall at Blantyre
8 Mar 1878 - 17 killed by fire and explosion at Barrwood, Kilsyth
This a list of other accidents, maybe need to know the actual pit.

I just noticed you don't indicate a date, (how did I miss that last night? couldn't have been the wee dram .... ::)) that will make the enquiry a lot more difficult. Try and provide a date. Good luck.

I think we've conversed on this subject elsewhere...
I've found an image of the death registration on my files. Robert died at Hartwood Asylum (or Hartwood Hospital), Shotts on 1 Mar 1908. The death was reported by his son Daniel Nisbet, then resident at Dykehead, Shotts. The cause of death is recorded as Morbis Cordis. His age is recorded on the death certificate as 68 (he was actually 69 - DoB: 5 Aug 1838).
Don't put too much emphasis on the mining accident. The only source I have for that is my late Grandfather (Robert and Hamilton's Grandson), who wasn't born until 1906, and, until I find any corroboration, I'm classifying it as "family legend."

Slight amendment:
A quick recheck shows the cause of death to be Morbus Cordis (unknown duration) and acute bronchitis (7 days)
Death at Hartwood Asylum, Shotts. But the entry also says "usual residence Old Monkland". I suspect that that address is from before he was incarcerated.
