Is anyone researching the Mavor family from Dysart? I have quite a lot of information and would be interested in hearing from fellow Mavor descendants. Also anyone who knows of a link between the Dysart Mavors and those in the north east of Scotland.
-
good afternoon my friend, big big welcome to rootschat, should you need any help with any census lookups, please feel free to ask, had a wee looksee for the 1841 census and noticed that all 18 mavor's where all living in dysart.

Thanks Joe, yes there are a lot of Mavors and all the Dysart ones are part of one big family apparently! A lot of unravelling to do, and I'm looking forward to working back to pre 1855. The only other Mavors I'm aware of are from the north east of Scotland, and a few in Edinburgh and Glasgow. I'm curious to find out if they are linked from way back.

hi pal, if you give us what you have so far, we might be able to help

Help would be great! Haven't got the tree in GEDCOM, its all on paper at the moment so whats the easiest way to share information? I could begin by giving you my starting point; George Mavor married Isabella Currie in 1795 in Dysart, they had (at least) 6 children, one of whom was David Mavor (my G-G-G grandfather, born 1807. He married Rachel Mitchell. I would be interested in the 1841 census to fill in some gaps, and would like to know more about George and Isabella. Thanks for your interest Joe, looking forward to hearing from you!

Hello 'oldbear',
I wonder whether you have searched on the Fife FHS site at
http://www.fifefhs.org/
If not, a search for MAVOR (and also the alternative spellings MAVER and MAVOUR) brings up quite a few hits including, in interments at Dysart St Denis, the following:
"CURRER, ISBEL: sp of George Maver, mason, Dysart; 7 July 1819"
Apologies if you've already done so.
JAP

Thanks for that JAP, I have had a look around the FFHS site and got a list of St Denis interments but not that one! I appreciate you taking the time to look it up and I'll try the alternative spellings.

now for the dundee connection, i think your george senior (david's father) was born 24/2/1764 dysart, he was the son of robert, and there seems to be a robert living in dundee, which i assume is the brother of george.

had a wee look at the link provided by jap, and i am sorry but i have to agree with jap, i think the mavor family are mason's, even george senior.

Thanks a million Joe, you've confirmed the stuff I have, and the Dundee connection is very interesting - a different direction for me to follow! Your interest is much appreciated.
The Mavors were all stonemasons, there were loads of them in Dysart and were involved in a lot of the building in the 19th century - I found a website which listed the contractor employed to deepen Dysart harbour in the 1870's as David Mavor & Son. Quite interesting for us as descendants of these builders! I now need to research original George's siblings as I have Mavors which don't seem to belong anywhere - I've a feeling they are George's nieces and nephews. I live in Fife so if and when I can get the time i will visit the library and trawl the OPR's. If you turn up any more info I would be delighted, and thanks once again.

CAme across this exhange when searching for Mavors. I just discovered a Mavor in my family tree, from Crail, around mid 1700's. Although in some places the name is recorded as Mawyer. Did you get any further with your research?

Hi, My name is Gerald Mavor Bell and i,m from Northern Ireland, I have been looking at my family history in general terms but its interesting to read that the name MAVOR is so well documented, If i can be of any help please dont hesitate to contact me. Kind Regards Gerald
-
Hi Gerald, nice to hear from other Mavors. It's not a common name in Scotland, the majority seem to be in Dysart, Fife and the north east of Scotland. Are your Mavor relations originally from Scotland?
Ruth

Hi Oldbear,
Yes as far as i can make out my family on the paternal side came from Strathmiglo in Scotland origionally. My Uncle name is Rosslyn Crawford Bell and as far as i have been told the name Rosslyn comes from The Earl Of Rosslyn somehow. I can only accurately go back as far as my great grandfather who lived in Bangor in Northern Ireland and died in 1926. His name was Francis Bell.
I cant be sure when the first Mavor went to Northern Ireland or Ireland as it was before 1921. i suspect it was around 1850 onwards,
Thanks for getting in touch,
Regards Gerald

Hi,
If it helps at all I have Mavors in the distant past in my family tree - my GG Grandmother Mary Syme married John Mavor in 1893 in Cupar. Mary had 1 son who was 1 when she married John - & there's nothing to indicate that he is the biological father - so I don't have any direct blood relationship to the Mavor family.
From what I can see Johns parents were George Mavor & Margaret Black who married in 1894 in Kinghorn.
Not sure if that helps to add to your research!
