Title: Crilly/Patterson, Belfast, 1928
Post by: tucson mike on Friday 09 February 07 22:43 GMT (UK)
My grandmother Catherine Patterson Fogarty arrived in New York from Liverpool in 1928. I've located the passenger list for her trip. Name & address of nearest relative in originating country is:
"Sister - Mrs. Grace Crilly, 77 Cavendish St., Belfast"
So Mrs. Crilly's maiden name was Patterson if I'm not mistaken.

I haven't so far done any research for Belfast or Antrim, so I'm not sure where to look next in order to find, say, Grace's marriage to Mr. Crilly, or anything else about her. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hello Mike,

I was in the Central Library today using their Street Directories. I'll have a look for Fogartys and Pattersons living in Belfast in the 1920s when I'm there tomorrow.... Cavendish Street is in the Falls Road area  It's located at 125, Falls Road. St Peter's Roman Catholic Church is on the corner of Falls Road and Cavendish Street. That may be a handy clue regarding where to start your search. Lets hope the Fogartys and Pattersons appear in that same area.

Chris,

Well, St. Peter's Cathedral, I see they call it in the article at Wikipedia.org. Looks a bit grand for my great-aunt to have been married in, but who's to say. Thanks for your help.

Hi Mike,

I know its 3 years later but I have just spotted your post when researching my grandmother's family tree - she was Grace Teresa Crilly (maiden name Patterson) of 77 Cavendish Street, Belfast who had two sisters Catherine (Kitty) Patterson who according to my info went to New York and Elizabeth (Lizzy) Patterson who emigrated to Adelaide, Australia.
Their mother Catherine (maiden name O'Kane) died shortly after Grace was born - their father was John Patterson a Sailor (he was known in Belfast as Captain Patterson from Liverpool).

Looks like our grandmothers were sisters!
Contact me if you wish to share information - I would be glad to tell you what I know.

Philp,

Yes, that's a bit of luck. What does that make us, first cousins twice removed? I've sent you email off the list, so we can communicate further.

Best wishes,

Mike Carroll

Hi Mike,

I have emailed you today with some further information about our common relatives.  I now know from your mail that John Patterson was probably a crew member on the SS Britannic in 1892 which sailed between Liverpool and New York.

Perhaps some other members on this forum could suggest the best way of tracing crew member records of this ship and others of its era.

Any other information anyone can offer about the Crilly's of 53 Cavendish Street (1901 census) and 61 Earlscourt street (1911 census) who were listed on the 1901 census as originally from Co. Derry would also be appreciated.

Hi,
There seems to be some confusion about the place of birth. The 1901 census states Co. Derry for the parents and older children as can be plainly seen in Form A. The 1911 census says Co. Kerry for the same people as can also be seen in Form A.
The 1911 census says the couple have been married foe 28 Years, and assuming Co. Derry is correct, I can find a marriage of James Crilly to Annie Elizabeth Doherty in Killowen Roman Catholic Church, Coleraine, Co. Derry on 31 Dec 1882.

Hi Kingskerwell,

Thanks for the prompt reply - I did spot several discrepancies between the  1901 and 1911 census (wife's name Jennie in 1901 instead of Annie - it appears to be a transcription error)- I am quite sure though that the Crilly's were from Co. Derry rather than Kerry.  This means the information you have supplied could prove to be important.

I appreciate your help. :)

Hi,
Another small bit of information, James Crilly, father James, married Grace Teresa Patterson, father John, in Belfast (Urban 1) Roman Catholic Church on 25 Oct 1911.

Thanks again Kingskerswell,

Grace Patterson (Crilly) was my Grandmother and thankfully those details in your last post I do have - it is the next generation back on both sides but especially Grace Patterson Crilly's father John Patterson who is difficult to trace.

John Patterson was a sailor who married my GGMother Catherine O'Kane and lived at Garmoyle Street, Belfast in 1881, Clanmorris Street in 1882 and 177 York Street in 1884 (these are addresses recorded on the birth certficates of his 3 daughters Elizabeth, Catherine and Grace) who is proving very difficult to trace.  In fact the only solid information I have about him is his name appearing on his childrens birth certs - I can't find any record of his marriage to Catherine O'Kane (born 17/02/1856 to Peter Kane and Elizabeth McGrath).  I do know that he worked on liners that sailed between Liverpool and New York and almost certainly was on the crew of the SS Britannic in 1892 when on one trip his children were passengers.

In the meantime I will try to follow up on the Crilly link in Coleraine.

Regards Philip

Hi Philip & Kingerswell,

The records for Co. Derry at RootsIreland confirm the Crilly/Doherty marriage, though the church name doesn't seem to be quite the same. I did not spring for the 5 Euros to see the record yet, I confess.

[Sorry, I had a question here about David Patterson, but it was confused about generations. If you saw it please ignore.]

"Killowen R.C. Church" is St. John's.

Regarding our mystery man John Patterson: He's Philip & my great-grandfather. His timeline is something like:
1847 - born in Ireland, per the 1901 England census (no birth record found yet).
186? - presumably married for the first time; no known marriage record.
1867 - had a son John H. Patterson, born in "Northern Ireland". Year given in 1900 US census for John H.
1878 - married Catherine O'Kane, presumably his 2nd wife, in Belfast.
1887 or thereabouts -- his wife Catherine passed away.
1898 or thereabouts -- married his 3rd wife Annie, maiden name unkown, in Liverpool.
1916 - passed away in Liverpool.

Missing facts include parents' names, the maiden names of  his 1st and 3rd wives, and whether he had siblings.

FreeBMD (www.freebmd.org.uk) shows 1 marriage (1895-1900) for a John Patterson to an Annie in Liverpool and 1 in Wigan. Of cousie "Annie" could have used the name Ann, Anne, etc. on the marriage record which will probably increase the possibilities.
July/Sept.1895 Liverpool district volume 8b page 264-
grooms: John Patterson and James Hannigan
brides: Annie Flynn, Annie Rogers

But searching on the Lancashire version says Annie Flynn was his bride-
www.lancashirebmd.org.uk

You can use both the sites to search for other marriages.

A birth certificate for the son John H. Patterson would get you the 1st wife's name. There's nothing in civil registration index for a John H_ Patterson born 1860/1869 near Belfast but he could have been registered as John (without middle name) or born a bit earlier (birth registration started in 1864).
If John H. Patterson married and died in the U.S. it might be worth checking those certificates if you haven't done so already. Most U.S. states list birthplace (although might just be down as 'Ireland' or 'Belfast') and names of parents (although since John's mother would have died when he was so young he might have given his stepmother's name on the marriage certificate.

Aghadowey,

Hmm, I should have know to try FreeBMD. I didn't know, though, that there was a Lancashire version. Thanks very much both for letting me know about the sites, and for the lookups.

And yes, I also have not checked U.S. records other than the census for John H. I'll have to do that.
