Hello,
I am looking for the Simpson family on the 1841, 51, 61 & 71 census. The family lived in the Howden area.
I have the following information from a birth certificate of Henrietta Simpson.
Henrietta Simpson was born in Howden in the January of 1847 to George Simpson & Margaret nee Hairsine (Harrison, Harsine) George Simpson was a Plumber at the time.
I know from the Freebmd that Margaret Simpson died in 1852 in the Howden area.
On the 1881 census RG11 4737/110/14 George Simpson, was aged 68, born 1813, born in Booth, a Publican, living with a daughter called Sarah, aged 32, born 1849, in Howden. Living in High Road, Asselby.
When George Simpson died in 1884 his address was the Percy Arms at Boothferry. His will mentioned Sarah, Henrietta (who married William Richard Penrose Dale in 1873) and a son called George living at Airmin also an Innkeeper. No more details of George.
I think George Simpsons father was called William Simpson a coachman & horsekeeper from Booth, but no more details of him as yet.
Any help given will be gratefully received.
Louise

WOW!!
Thanks for all the information. I was reading it with amazement. I couldn't believe I was getting so much information in one go. You have given me a lot to think about. I am going on familysearch next to see if I can find any of the new people on the IGI.
Once again thank you,
Louise

Hi again Louise,
Here are Henrietta and George staying with what could be their grandparents?
1851 census:
HO107/2358, folio 339 page 7
Yorkshire, Balkholme
Isaac Hairsine, head, mar. 67, Farmer of 140 acres, employ 1 Lab,

Ann, wife, mar. 68, Yorks, South Cave
Ann, dau. unm. 26, b. Bellasize
Henrieta Simpson, visitor, 5, Scholar, b. Howden
George Simpson, visitor, 4, Scholar, b. Howden
Pels :)
I have an Ann Hairsine who marries in to my family who I believe could be the Ann aged 26 above.
Ann gives her birthplace as Bellasize, although I have her as being born c.1829/30.
Marriage - George Slingsby UNDERWOOD to Ann HAIRSINE, May 12th 1852, Howden Parish Church.
Known children:
Emily Slingsby UNDERWOOD, born 1853 North Cave, died 1853
William Henry UNDERWOOD, born 1854 New Village
Tom George UNDERWOOD, born 1855 Wallingfen
Henrietta UNDERWOOD, born 1858 Wallingfen, died 1912 Newport (Henrietta married into another of my lines).
I haven't checked this out any further as they are not direct ancestors, but I thought I'd throw it into the mix in case it was relevant. :)
Jo.
Edit - Also possibly another Hairsine link. I have an Esther HAIRSINE who married Dinnis UNDERWOOD May 7th 1866 at Howden Minster. Dinnis and George Slingsby UNDERWOOD were brothers. Esther was born c.1823 in South Cave on census returns. Looking on IGI there is a baptism at Eastrington as follows:
Esther HAIRSINE, parents Isaac and Henrietta, bapt 18 May 1823, Eastrington, and also to same parents at Eastrington,
Ann HAIRSINE, bapt 20 December 1824
Margaret HAIRSINE, bapt 17 March 1817
Mary Ann HAIRSINE, bapt 25 February 1813
Henrietta HAIRSINE, bapt 23 April 1815

Christiana HAIRSINE, bapt 2 April 1821
Rhoda HAIRSINE, bapt 4 May 1827
Emma HAIRSINE, bapt 22 August 1828

Hello,
This is very quick as I am going out to work. I will write a longer message tonight.
My husbands link to the Hairsine family is through Henrietta Hairsine born in 1815.
There is a very good Hairsine website. I will give you the address tonight as I have to find it.
Thank you for writing, sorry for the shortness of this note.
I will be in touch tonight.

Hello,
As I said on my previous post the Hairsine family are on my husbands side of the tree. Margaret (not Henrietta as I previously posted - I was in too much of a hurry to check!!) Hairsine married George Simpson. Their daughter Henrietta Simpson married William Dale, after 2 more generations of Dales you arrive at my husband.
Since making the original posts on rootschat I have found two very good websites. They are:
www.geocities.com/ednobbs/hairsine/dat0.htm
This is run by Murray Reid in New Zealand. He gives an e-mail address to be contacted on, but I haven't contacted him yet. This is the line up from Isacc Hairsine, born 1784 and Henrietta Brittain.
www.geocities.com/ednobbs/
This is a web- site that has a list of parish records for the Hairsines, not all of them directly ours. It also gives a history of the name. It is very interesting reading.
I hope you find them as interesting to read as I did. Thank you for getting in touch with me.

Hello Louise,
Thanks for the reply and the websites.
These Hairsine girls aren't direct ancestors, but I'm very easily sidetracked and am just as interested in siblings of my ancestors and so have collected quite a bit of information.
If you want details of the children and grandchildren of Tom George Underwood and Henrietta Underwood let me know. Also, do you have the Monumental Inscription info for Isaac Hairsine born 26th May 1819? I spotted his name in a booklet of MI's for South Cave and Broomfleet which I have.
I also have another Hairsine reference - Harriet Hairsine, born c.1814/1815 Newport married Paul Pickhaver (brother of my 2xGt-Grandmother). Her baptism is probably 9th August 1814 at Eastrington, parents Charles and Mary Hairsine.
Whilst there's no genetical link between your husband's family and mine, it looks like they certainly knew each other back in the 1800's. :)

Hello Jo,
Like you I am easily sidetracked. I don't follow one line in an orderly fashion, my husband keeps asking why certain people have made it onto my charts & it is just because I have found them while looking for other people & it seems disrespectful to discard them. I like to think they are recorded somewhere, also I have found that by going sideways sometimes I can eventually move backwards (if that makes sense!) & sometimes families inter marry.
Thank you for the offer of information on the Underwood family, but I think they are going a little remote for me.
Sorry, I don't have a Monumental Inscription for Isaac Hairsine born 26th May 1819.
Using the information I retrieved from Murray Reid's website I looked up Harriet Hairsine, baptised 9th August 1814 at Eastrington. I traced her branch of the family up to Abraham son of Daniel Haresine of Brockholes, Drax Bp. 7th March 1713. The line I follow is from Matthew son of Daniel Haresine of Brockhold, Drax baptised 29th December 1708. The families meet up eventually.
Regards,
Louise

Hi Louise,
As you say you don't have the MI for Isaac Hairsine maybe the following will be useful.
Broomfleet Churchyard:
In affectionate rememberance of FRANCES the beloved wife of ISAAC HAIRSINE of Broomfleet who died August 7th 1870 aged 44 years. Also ISAAC son of the above ISAAC and FRANCES HAIRSINE who died Feby 24th 1857 aged 1 year and two days. Also ISAAC HAIRSINE husband of the above, Farmer of this place, born May 26th 1819, died March 5th 1874.
I thought from the birth date that this might be the Isaac who was brother to your Margaret?
Jo. :)

Hello,
Thank you for the memorial inscription, it is Margaret's younger brother & wife.
I think it is their daughter who eventually moves to New Zealand.
Thank you for all you help,
Louise

Don't know whether this will help you at all but I found the following names on a passenger list (bound for South Africa) for a ship called "Indian Queen" which arrived July 1858.
George UNDERWOOD aged 30 (Carpenter)
Catherine UNDERWOOD aged 29
George John aged 9
Mary Ann aged 7
Henry aged 3

Thank you for the information about the Underwood's. I don't know how they fit into my family yet, but I have written it all down & I am going to look at them.
Thank you once again for taking the time to write,
Louise
