Hi lee

I know you have tried everywhich way to find info about your Grandad on RC  ;D

It just occurred to me, has anyone on your family applied for his service record?

Wendi  :)

no but that is what I need to do but can't really afford to at the the minute. I have found a good website which tells what all the ribbons mean and by turning them into greyscale I should be able to guess roughly what they mean.
thanks for both your helps anyway.

This is what he could have possibly won.

Lee,
The India Service medal 1939-45 was only issued to Indian troops, so he wouldn't have had that one.

If he qualified for some of the other stars, he should certainly have the 1939-45 Star and the War Medal

Also, the medal ribbons would have been worn in a strict order (the order they're given on the website you found), so that might influence your identification.

Africa, Burma & France and Germany Stars would not be an obvious combination!

Neil

On further looking Lee, I don't think the France & Germany Star is likely either.

Neither the Royal Sussex nor the Royal West Kent Regt appears to have battle honours for NW Europe 1944-45. Tends to suggest they weren't there.

Africa, Burma are possibles though, along with Italy.

I was going to suggest the one you have labelled France and Germany could be Italy.

My Dad has the Africa, Burma and Italy stars.

Modified - on the other hand, there is a report on
www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar/stories/93/a2436293.shtml
from a soldier in the 4th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, No 6402232 about getting away from Dunkirk.

Yes I put nearly all the ribbons on so others can compare them on there photos.
I think that my grandad would have received the Burma, Africa The Europe one and Defence
not so sure about.

Service at Dunkirk didn't qualify for the France and Germany Star.

The Star was "For operational service in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, or Germany, between 6 June 1944 and 8 May 1945. "

Thanks for clarifying that, Neil.

That makes it likely that it's the Italy star, then.
