Does anyone have someone in their history who travelled on the 'John Rennie' ship from November 1872 - February 1873 from Plymouth to Queensland?

Thanks Sue,
I forgot to thank you for posting that link. I was wondering if anyone has an actual list of passengers and the area they came from as I have a complete log of the voyage to Australia from England written by my ancestor. I think they would be very interested to read an actual account of life on board the John Rennie - which landed in 1873.

Hi Diana,
I am helping a descendant of James Henry Uren and Catherine Uren (nee Mill), who were on that voyage, with their family tree. They had an infant son also named James with them on the ship and it is not quite clear whether he survived the voyage. A copy of your ancestor's log of the voyage would be wonderful.
Would you like me to get you a passenger list from the State Archives or do you already have it?
Regards,
Andrew

James appears to have died on the voyage out [29th Nov 1872] as evidenced by his death registration at QLD BDM - 1873/M904. The 'M' signifies a marine death eg he died on the voyage.
Andrew and Diana, these people are distant rellies of mine so any info you may have would also be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to your contact.

Hello Diana,
I have two Ancestors who arrived in Australia on board the John Rennie on 16 Feb 1873. I would really appreciate a copy of your log if it is still available.
Thank you and Best Wishes,
Linda

Hi Linda,
Which two passengers were they? Send me your email and I will send you the diary. It's fantastic.

Hi Diana,
My Ancestors names were William and Susan Bright. They came from Dorset in England. As yet I still don't know their reason for coming, I can only assume they were hoping for a better life in the new country.
I haven't worked out yet how to send my email address to you - I've seen on here that we're not supposed to type it in this box. Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you and Best Wishes once again,
Linda

Hello again Diana,
I've just been reading about the Personal Message system, I will give that a try.
If you don't mind me asking, who were your relatives on the voyage?
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Linda.

I have an ancestor who arrived with his family on the John Rennie arriving in Queensland on the 16th Feb 1873.
His name is John Thomas Huet who arrived with his wife Catherine. They had a daughter who was born on the voyage and named Christine Rennie Huet.
Hope to hear about any information available.
-
Hi Rosie,
I recognise the names - yes I have the diary of the voyage and the birth of Christina Huet is recorded and her name is mentioned. I will write to you via personal message and give you my email address.
Best wishes

Hi Diana,
Do you by chance know if Stephen Perkes (sometimes spelled Perks) was aboard the John Rennie? I'm trying to find out if he was in fact on that ship and also if he traveled alone. Any information or history you could provide would be SO appreciated! Thank you in advance for any info or interesting details.
-
Hi Diana,
I was searching for a possible image of the 'John Rennie' and found your message. My GGrandmother, Elizabeth Hurley, was on that voyage and disembarked in Port Denison (Bowen) on 16 February 1873. She was aged 17 years. I would very much appreciate a copy of your ancestor's diary if you are willing to share.
Many thanks

Hi Diana,
The sister and family of my husband's great grandfather sailed on the John Rennie in 1872/73 ... we would love to read about the journey if you're still happy to send a copy.
They were Elizabeth and Henry Packman and their four children. Do you have full passenger details - we are wondering if her brother went with them. Will pm you.
Many thanks.

There is a image of the passenger list for the John Rennie online at Queensland state archives site.

Thanks Giblet, that's amazing. Found the family but nothing for hubby's great g'father.
Would still love to see the diary though; it must have been quite a journey.

If you have any more interest in the ship specifically, the John Rennie was one of the ships of the Devitt and Moore line which specialised in the Australian trade and remained with sailing ships much longer than most. The archive is at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich and there is, if you can find a copy, a history of the line called Painted Ports by Capt A.G. Course. There is a photo of the ship at the NMM.
Another ship of the line is the City of Adelaide - and there is a hugely exciting project to rescue her and bring her to Adelaide. She is the only remaining clipper designed for the Australian trade, and she and Cutty Sark are the only remaining clippers. See http://cityofadelaide.org.au/

Thanks Graham, it all adds to the background :)

Hi Deirdre,
I've found the Packmans. I will send you all the copies of the passenger lists etc and of course the wonderful diary later when I have a bit of time.
Bye for now

Brill, thanks Diana, I've found out loads about the family once they were in Australia but the diary sounds fascinating thanks.
Found the passenger list from Giblet's post too.

Hi Diana
I have just did a google search on the John Rennie and found your amazing post about an ancestral log of the journey. My Great x 3 Grandfather George Lucas was on the ship aged 20. I would be very interested in the log, if your willing to share.
Cheers

Rosie girl
Christina Rennie Huet was my grandmother. I live in southern Victoria and am researching my mother's family. My mother is the daughter of Christina. My mother is 98 and I am trying to find out as much as I can about her maternal line of the family while mum is still with us. Christina was married twice, my mother the product of the second marriage. Christina was drowned as she missed her footing getting on a ferry in Brisbane and as there was not much CRP etc in those times, she was not saved. My brother was with her at the time. I can be contacted on : email address removed please use the pm system to exchange private details Looking forward to hearing from you. Very exciting all this research. Cheers for now.

Hi Diana
My ancestors were on the John Rennie. They were from Cornwall. The manifest shows them as John and Elizabeth Ressell and their children Stephen, Annie and Arthur. Their surname in fact was Kessell with a K and that is the name they have always had in Australia. I believe they never knew they entered Australia under the name Ressell. If you have a spare moment I would be interested if there is anything about them in your logbook. I have no information about them from the ship's arrival until they settled in Newcastle in 1875. Regards and best wishes, Bob

Hi there I have just started doing full research on my husband's family and have come across the information on here about the John Rennie arriving in Bowen in 1873. My husband's family were the Packman's - I have the passenger information but was wondering if anyone has any further information about the vessell or the actual voyage. Also interested in contact from anyone who may be related to these Packmans.
-
Hi! And welcome to rootschat.
My husband's great great grandfather Walter Robert Leigh was a brother of Elizabeth Packman. Great to make contact with another member of the extended family. Which of their children is your husband descended from?
Deirdre
-
Hi Deidre My husband's grandfather was Daniel Edward Packman who was one of the children born to Henry and Elizabeth Packman once they arrived in Sydney. Great to make contact and looking forward to any further information anyone can provide.
-
Hi, have you found much info? I've found Walter and Elizabeth's parents but it's probably easier to give you info by private message. You need to post 3 messages before you can use the PM facility so reply to this message and then we can chat.
-
Hi Deidre, I am slowly working through both sides of our families. I have not got anything for Elizabeth's parents or her siblings so if you do have information that would be great. I need to work out how to PM but that sounds great, if you are willing to share. I have found a couple of small articles about the John Rennie in Trove but not sure if you have seen them as I think some of the links were on previous posts. I have got a bit further on the Packman side but not sure if that is of interest to you.
Regards, Catherine

Hi Catherine,
You can use the PM facility now you've made 3 posts..... see the link:
http://www.rootschat.com/help/pms.php
Elizabeth's parents were Richard Leigh (1817-1851) and Sarah nee White (1817-1845). Sarah died when Walter, their 4th child, was only 6 months old, leaving Richard with 4 children under 7. Richard died less than 6 years later, having had 2 more children with a woman called Martha - they don't appear to have married, though she does refer to herself as Martha Leigh, widow. It was quite a shock when I first found her in the 1851 census as a 25 year old widow with 6 children aged from 13 downwards :o).
Elizabeth's story seems nice and straightforward, but the same can't be said for Walter ::). I'll PM you later with more details but if you want some insight into the problems I've faced with Walter, and the amazing help I've had on RootsChat, enter Walter Robert Leigh into the search facility on here and you'll find a number of topics in various parts of the UK.
I've just realised that I've been in touch with another descendant of Daniel Edward Packman (or Edward Daniel Packman?) on Ancestry. She may well have more info on both sides of the family.
I have also received a copy of the diary of the voyage of the John Rennie in 1873 which was the original subject of this topic. I'll have to look for it though as it was saved on my old computer!

Hi Diane,
I also had an ancestor on the John Rennie. Her name was Mary J McCormick, aged 16 under the free passenger list.
I would love to know more about the voyage.

Hi Diana,
Looks like this post is everlasting!
My brother-in-law's descendants were on the John Rennie, William & Eliza Hendry, with their two young children.
Would love for any info you have, including the diary.

Hello there,
I've stumbled across this thread and glad to have done so! I believe one of my distantly related ancestors was actually born on this specific journey and had the name Rennie as part of her middle name as a result. Looking at the immigration list it states born on voyage. I would love to know any further details if the diary had some in as I bet it made for quite the news on the ship. Her name was Alice Rennie Gamby, born on 25 November 1872 (I think?) with her father being Elias and her mother Matilda. Many thanks!
