Births Mar 1879
Stokes Margaret St. Geo. East 1c 417
Marriages Mar 1908
STOKES Margaret Cecilia St. Giles 1b 659
Since there is not a birth registration for a Margaret Cecilia Stokes you may want to obtain her marriage certificate to check the details for her father unless you are absolutely sure the 1881 census family is correct - especially since the family seem so difficult to find after the 1881 census.

Thank you all for your help, I will have to get the birth cert as my father, now deceased, told me that Margaret's father, his mother, was at first in the Royal Irish Constabulary, then transfered to the Met. The Met refused to transfer his pension rights and he took his case to the House of Commons and he won. But the family think his name was John, my Dad always referred to him as his favorite uncle John. I even have a photo of him in uniform.

Now you've mentioned these extra details, yes I'd agree that the marriage Cert is needed.
The above family jumped straight out with the right name and YoB and District, but it might be worth delving deeper based on the facts you have....
how did you establish the West Ham area as a location ?
Keep us posted !

Thanks Valda, I will have to get the marriage cert as the only info is from family knowledge Margaret's parents are shown to be John Stokes and Marie (unknown surname)

guess you missed my last posting ...
How did you establish West Ham as the 1881 likely location ?
-
Hi Newfy,
West Ham is where my father and myself were born, Dad was was living in Canning Town and went to school there. My Grandfather Benjamin Edwin Knight was in the Royal Navy and met my Grandmother Margaret C. Stokes there. Why they got married in St Giles I don't know. My mother tells me that the Stokes were from Ireland, but I don't think they were Irish.
-
Cheers for that - seems pretty logical then.
There may have been a 'family connection' to St Giles I guess. My g*2 Grandparents were in Walthamstow, but both his marriages were in Bow ... and it wasnt the brides home either ?

Brilliant Valda, I'll be able to get his records. Dad told me he served on the Camperdown, a cruiser, when in 1893 Rear Admiral Tryon (an unfortunate name in the circumstances), ordered his Captain to form the fleet into two columns, dispite being told that the vessels were only 6 cable lengths apart and 8 were needed, Tryon insisted the order be carried out and his flag ship was run down by Camperdown, he went down with his ship!!!!!!!

In case it is of interest, there is mention of a John STOKES (Met) police constable 313 H stationed at Shadwell (The Times 30 Jan 1907) ............. as a witness.

Thanks I'll look into it

Can I just say the Stokes family in the 1881 census at the beginning of this thread is nothing to do with Margaret Celia Stokes.
Margaret (from that census) daughter of Henry & Charlotte Stokes married George Wallis.
Henry & Charlotte Stokes are my G-G-Grandparents :)
