Ok call me thick but this is something which always confuses me,
Free BMD has selections beginning Mar then Jun, Sep and Dec ..
1837 online goes Jan Feb Mar, Apr May Jun, Jul Aug Sep, Oct Nov Dec.
So if I order a cert that turns up in Mar Apr May on Free Bmd do I ask for the March Quarter or the Jan quarter when I order from GRO ?

If FreeBMD says June Qtr it means the quarter ending with June. So for ex my grandfather is born in April 1900 but is listed in the June qtr (which includes April, May and June).
I don't think you are thick at all, and really it should say this on FBMD but as far as I can see it doesn't!
Anyway, what ever the qtr given on FBMD, that is the one you ask for from GRO.

My GG-grandmother's death is listed in 2 consecutive quarters on the FBMD. So do I just give the year, volume and page? Or do I explain the discrepancy?

My GG-grandmother's death is listed in 2 consecutive quarters on the FBMD. Anna
I wonder why that is, she hardly died twice ???
I should explain your problem at the bottom of the application form. Or you could look at the index at 1837online and see if it is entered there in duplicate too?

Hello Anna. Unless your GGmother has a very unusual name it should not be possible for her death to be registered twice. I suppose, as she was a lady, her name was not Lazarus? This could be two separate people. I found three people with the same name who died in the same registration district in the same quarter.
You might take a look at this from another angle.

Thanks Gardener - it seems odd that they don't actually make it very clear but heigh ho it keeps us thinking..

My ancestor has an unsusual name Elijah, and his death is down twice on freebmd. I assumed his son had also died. I was going to be extravagant and send for both.!!

It is posible that there has been a mistake in the transcribing ! As far as I know the details are entered, then verified (that is when the names appear in bold......if the quarter is transcribed wrongly....it may come up twice.
If you give me the details I will look it up on the GRO index for you !

Hello Kathy, Did you mean me.
I have Elijah Burrows from freebmd
death September quarter 1842 Portsea Island 7 95
death December quarter 1842 Portsea Island 7 98
Where are you looking for these records? I was going to look at 1837online when I get to checking my Burrows family but if you are able to look for free I would be very greatful

I have a lot of credits on this site....and don't mind doing the occasional search for people !
I couldn't find your Elijah Burrows on freebmd......but on the 1837 gro index...when I checked it out....the correct ref is :
BURROWS Elijah Sept 1842 Portsea Island 7 95
(there is no Elijah listed in the Dec quarter)
Incidentally, as I was searching, I accidently searched births instead of deaths the first time....and found this one, which may belong to you !
BURROWS Eliza June 1842 Portsea Island 22 144

Its easy to assume a name is uncommon, but remember that families often used the same first names across several families of cousins. Elijah may not be a common name now, but it would be entirely possible to have two or three vaguely related individuals with that name. I have one group of three males with the same names born within two years of each other. Of course the other possibility is that two relatives registered the death without consulting each other, one at the end of one quarter and one at the beginning of the next.

But it is MORE likely that it is transcribed wrongly ! I can't tell you how many times I have found the original record, on checking, to be different from the transcription !

Thanks Kathy I will send for that one.
Incidently I just looked again on Freebmd and he is now down 3 times for differnet quarters in 1842. June and December quarter have the same reference. The September quarter is in dark blue. Looks as if someone is having fun on Freebmd. I know it is only a guide and I would look any up before sending for the cert but this is peculiar. I wonder if someone has said something and it has been altered wrongly.
