I'm looking for an Albert Victor Chummings, Born Highworth, Swindon. Wiltshire. England
in 1875.
I have a marriage to Olive Barnum 21st Sept 1907 in Detroit Wayne, Michigan.
Any clues to when he arrived in the US and date of death would be most appreciated.
Thanks
Tony

I have Albert and Olive crossing the border from Canada to Detroit on Sept. 6, 1913. They lived at 130 Wesson Street, Pontiac, Michigan. AT the bottom, under seaport and date of landing, he says Quebec, June 1903, SS Lake Champlain. I will look around further.

I have just found his WWI draft registration card. He lists his middle name as Edward here and wife is Olive. They live at 149 Wesson in Pontiac and his birthdate as 26 Jun 1877. It is very hard to read and I can't get the occupation.

I have him in the 1920 census, a widow, living at 149 Wesson Street. It looks like he came over 1892, but there is something written underneath, I think another date. Maybe it is 1892 to Canada and then a date to America. He is a laborer, I think in a foundry. He has a 20-year-old son, Joseph, born in Canada who is a laborer for automobiles. He came to US in 1914. There is also a servant, Ida Nowlen?, 41, widow, born Michigan, living with them. I'll see if I can find hiim in the 1930 and any record of death. Did you know about the son? He must have been married before in Canada.

He's still around in 1930 ;D, married again :D. He is living at 20 Michigan Avenue in Pontiac. He's an inspector of automobiles, owns his home (worth $4K) and a radio. He came to America in 1913 and he isnaturalized. His wife's name is Matie A, 39, born Michigan to German parents. I thught for sure he would be married to Ida. He was first married when he was 19 and she when she was 36. I'll have a look around for Joseph also.

I have found Joseph in Pontiac in 1930, married to Alta E, 30, born in Michigan. They have no children and have been married for about 4 years. Says he came to US in 1905 and he is naturalized, he does something with tools in an auto factory. Alta is a co-partner in a general insurance company. Hmmm.

Interestingly, I have found death records for Joseph and Albert's wife Matie.
Joseph H died 28 May 1975 in Pontiac Michigan. His birthdate is 30 Jan 1900.
Matie birthdate is 24 Sept 1890 and she died Sept 1978.
There's a Mary E. Chummings born 15 June 1899, died 17Apr 1984 in Pontiac and I wonder if that isn't Alta from the 1930 census.
I can't find Albert's death, but I would assume he died in Pontiac. Here is the link for the public library:
http://www.pontiac.lib.mi.us/
You might be able to get a nice bit of info about the family if they were there a long time and Joseph's wife owned a company there.

I only just now stumbled across this thread.
I have Olive Barnum, b. July 2, 1882, Ingersoll, Ontario, d/o Aaron Barnum and Ada McGowan McKay.
She married
1. Henry Barber Sept 22, 1899 in Middlesex Cnty, Ontario, and
2. Albert Edward Chummings September 21, 1907 Detroit Michigan.
They returned to Ingersoll for a few years, but moved back to Detroit Michigan September 24, 1913. She d. October 13, 1918 from Nephritis (kidney failure?).
Albert re-married Mattie. All three are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Pontiac Michigan.
I have not seen any details on children. If you would be so kind to share I would really appreciate it.

Hi abcweir
Thanks for joining this thread. The time from the original post doesn't really matter, the reply is always gratefully accepted. It does, however, leave me in a quandry.
I had a private response from a member of the Barnum Family who gave me Olive Barnums parents as
Barnabus Barnum 2 Apr 1846-24 Jan 1907 of Ingersoll, Ontario and Eliza Ellen Snider 1856-1883. They married in Ingersoll on 24 Dec 1872.
Albert appears to have had two children
Mary Chummings 15 Jun 1899-17 April 1974 who died at 4805, Pontiac Michigan
Joseph Henry Chummings 30 Jan 1900-28 May 1975 born in Ingersoll died at 4805 Pontiac, Michgan.
Josephs SSN was 369-07-7698. His was registered for service in the U.S. during WW1. Card #2827-1972C21-2-6.
If your interest lies with the Chummings Family (who were really Chammings) I have a wealth of information I would willingly share.
Alberts Father was my 2x Gt Grandfather.
Thanks for your reply

Tony,
I am a descendant of the Barnum's, through Olive's uncle William Henry (my Great Great Grandfather).
Olive was married twice, the first time to Henry Barber (Sept 22, 1899 in Ontario), but this marriage ended (no idea whether he died, or the marriage broke up) before 1901. In the 1901 census she was living with her parents with a child Joseph H. Barber, b. Jan 30, 1900 (obviously the marriage was a "shotgun" wedding). In the 1911 census for Ingersoll, Olive, Albert and Joseph (Chumming) are living on their own, but no Mary Chummings.
So Joseph H Barber and Joseph H Chummings are one and the same, but he was s/o Henry Barber. There is no record of a Mary Chummings in the Canadian census returns.

Hi again
Thank you very much for the additional information. It certainly clears up my confusion over the dates of Albert and Olives marriage and Josephs birth.
I suppose that because Joseph took the name Chummings he may have been formally adopted by Albert.
This is the address where I got my original Information regarding Olive, which records her as a Grand daughter of William Henry Barnum.

Thank you once again for helping me with this Family

Tony,
Did you see the entry in the 1901 Ontario Census Return (Oxford South, Ingersoll, B-3 Page 8)?
At line 25 there is
WILSON James E., b. July 10, 1872, Ontario, English, CofE
his wife Lucy, b. July 19, 1875, Ontario
daughter Marie T. b. Sept 1, 1896, Ontario, and
CHUMMINGS, Albert, b. July 19, 1875, England. His occupation is Soldier and his relationship is "cousin". He came to Canada in 1893.
By the way, Lucy and Marie T show up in the 1910 census returns for Detroit. Lucy is living alone and is recorded as "divorced".

Hi Bruce
Yes, thank you I have that info, I notice it also says he is with his 'cousin'
Albert arrived in Canada aboard the Dominion Line ship 'Sarnia' 30th Sep 1897. His occupation is shown as Labourer, which is understandable as he worked as a steam hammer operator in Swindon.
So I'm not sure where he became a soldier.
He made one return trip to England 25 Jul 1925 and gave his address as 18 Cricklade Road, Upper Stratton, which is just outside Swindon, where his remarried mother lived.
Thanks for your information
