my great great grandfather was an Ezekiel lock son of Matthew and Remembrance lock nee Boswell, Ezekiel married Amy Taylor, I'm interested in Sabra daughter of Ezekiel and Amy Lock born circa 1862 in Ecceshall Staffordshire, The only census record i can find of her is in 1891 living with husband Henry Bishop, is there any one connected to this family. Ezekiel "Zekie" Lock was the father of John Lock who was quite a famous fiddle player and they travelled throughout the county circuit of Shropshire, Herefordshire and Staffordshire

Hello cousin!
I am not sure how Henry Lock of South Cerney, Gloucestershire 1770's is related to Richard Lock of
Ampney Crucis, Gloucestershire 1690's, but DNA testing a Henry Lock male descendant and a Richard Lock male descendant, proves we are a 65/67 DNA match, meaning Richard and Henry are some how related.
Richard Lock and wife Mary Eldridge may have also spent time in Islip, Oxfordshire 1690's.
I find christening records for their children in both places, which according to the map, Islip isn't all that far from Ampney Crucis, and South Cerney isn't all that far from either place.
It is interesting that you mentioned Fiddle playing. My elders are always asking me if I have ever located who has possesion of the family fiddles! My direct lineage apparently had several fiddle players and no one seems to know where the family fiddles are now.
One of my closer cousins, was a steel guitar player back in the 1940's -50's and made it on the radio with his band. So music was a part of my family years ago.
But unlike Henry Lock, Richard Lock migrated to the USA by 1728.

Hi Fandango. My 4th great grandparents were also Ezekiel and Amy Lock. John the fiddle player was my 3rd great grandad. He had a daughter Frances, who had my grandad Len. I'm trying to find a birth record for Ezekiel and Amy but not having much luck. Even looking at parish records isn't bringing anything up. Do you know the exact year they were born? I have 1842 for Amy and before 1830 for Ezekiel, but not an exact yearfor him. Thanks 😊

The book was published in 2016 and other data may have become available since then which could affect the interpretation of the data.

A lot of people have identified Henry & Sarah Lock (née Peters) of South Cerney as the parents of Matthew Lock (the one married to Remembrance Boswell).
This is impossible as Henry Lock of South Cerney was buried there on 20 June 1811, but Henry Lock (father of Matthew) was alive in 1815 when his daughters Sarah and Unity were married, as reported in various newspapers. (I am descended from his younger daughter Lavinia.)
A few days ago, at Doynton, Gloucester, Mr Wilson, a resident near Stroud, to Sarah Lock, a young gipsey girl belonging to a gang then hutted on the common in the vicinity of that town. This happy event was celebrated by the ringing of bells and other demonstrations of joy. A handsome dinner was provided on the occasion at the Bull Inn in Hinton. A Ball followed, at which the whole of the gipsey corps, and the inhabitants for miles round, were present. At eleven o’clock the dingy tribe retired; but not before the father of the bride called for a pint pot, which he filled with guineas and presented to the bridegroom.
Lancaster Gazette, 3 June 1815
SINGULAR WEDDING – On the 24th ult. was married, at Chedworth, Gloucestershire, by the Rev. T. Nutt, Mr George Payne, late of the parish of Terrington, to Unity, second daughter of Henry Locke, a gypsy! An immense concourse of spectators of all ranks were assembled from the neighbouring villages; and during the performance of the marriage ceremony the body and galleries of the church were completely crowded. When the sacred rite was completed, they adjourned to the gypsy encampment, about half a mile distant, the bells ringing a joyful peal. About two o’clock a plentiful dinner was prepared, of which the party partook on the Downs! A great quantity of provisions was distributed to the poor, and strong beer and spirits were handed about in abundance. Dancing and singing succeeded the dinner, and the party did not break up till a substantial supper had concluded the festive day! It is not known exactly what fortune the lady has; but the father offers 500 guineas with each of his two other unmarried daughters, provided they be united to men of good character and householders.
Trewman’s Exeter Flying Post or Plymouth and Cornish Advertiser, 16 November 1815.
Henry's wife Sarah died in 1802 and was buried in Chetwynd, Salop. I don't know yet where/when Henry died.
Henry Lock of South Cerney and Henry Lock the "gypsy" are two different people.
I don't think the South Cerney Locks were travellers. All their burials and baptisms are local and I doubt they ever travelled further than Cirencester. :)

In case there is a faint possibility that you don't know. There is at least one recording of John Locke, it was originally made on a wax cylinder. It sounds beautiful. I often go back to it to listen. I just tried to upload it for you. Unfortunately the file size is too great.

Thank you for the recommendation. I've just bought the book for £9 so patiently waiting for it to arrive. It even had my nanny rememberance on the front 😊.
I'm mostly trying to find some kind of birth or baptism record, just to double check the parents. I have no doubt about them, but learned from a cousin it's always best to check officially. I found out my nan on another side had her grandad as her dad on her marriage certificate, so actually had a whole line for her dad to find. It will be a challenge as I get closer to 1837. They're a very interesting family to learn about 😊

Hi. Would you be able to send me a copy somehow? I've been looking everywhere for grandad Johns recording but only came across a YouTube cover. I want to hear it played by himself 😊. It had been on a music or audio library apparently but their website was hacked a few years ago and it was lost. You're the first person I've found to still have it. Maybe by email if it would fit or a link to it on Dropbox or Google drive if you have that?

I have found a Sarah Lock that died 7th October 1823 in Gloucestershire. Could his mum still have been a Sarah, just not Peters? I noticed a lot of people had Sarah Peters on their trees too so not sure where she has come from 😊

Yes, I think that is Sarah Lock née Peters, widow of Henry Lock of South Cerney who died in 1811.
This couple are not the Romani Henry & Sarah Lock. Someone made a wrong assumption and others have copied it without checking and researching further.
Our Sarah died in 1802 in Chetwynd, Shropshire. "Sarah, wife of Henry Lock, a traveller"
This is not far from Madeley where their daughter Lavinia was baptised in 1799.
I can't post the whole page as the file is too big, but it does say Chetwynd at the top.

No probs. I've messaged you. I played fiddle and I think I've got a viol player in my tree, but I'd be so chuffed if I was descended from John.
Cheers. Jim
