I'd be grateful if anyone can help me with a place name.
I've printed off an OPR for Marnoch and it states that Alexander Milne and Isabel Mackie were in 'Telepeg' or 'Telepass' - I think that's what it says, I'm probably way wide of the mark! ??? I'm pretty sure it begins with a 'T'!!
I can't find it on the map and wondered if anyone had local knowledge and might be able to enlighten me. If not, I'll try and scan the relevant bit and post it so someone might be able to make some sense of it.

Jill,
Hopefully someone with local knowledge will recognise it but in the meantime, Genuki has a list of
placenames for Marnoch here http://www.abdnet.co.uk/genuki/BAN/Marnoch/locations.html
Nothing jumps out immediately but it's worth a look.
A scan would be a good idea :)

Thanks, Elaine.
I hope I'm attaching a scan!!

It's very difficult isn't it? I enlarged it and stared at it for ages but I can only get T or F then ? L ? F?F?
The"L" looks the same as in Isobel and Milne.
The first "F" looks the same as it does for Reidford on the top line. The letter after F could be O or A. .
The letter after the O or A looks very much like the previous F.
Sorry that I can't help more..time for the experts I think :)

It's a tough one Jill. You can find a map of Marnoch at www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk. Click on Get-a-Map and enter Marnoch.
You can enlarge it in stages until you see the farms round about.
The only problem is that unless you have some idea of what the name could be it would be a pretty unprofitable exercise.

I've spent about half an hour going around an OS map on line. I think I might have found a poss at NJ 705 515 -
Tillyfar to the east of Forglen but not sure if it's in Marnoch parish - I'm getting map drunk!

That's really good of you, Gadget.
I've been doing the same but no luck. I can't even find your Forglen on the OS map but it sounds like a possible.
I'll keep looking!

Just to the east of Aberchirder. I'll see if I can get it up on multimap and put the link. OS don't allow that as far as I can see :(

Here it is, I hope:

I think the place you are looking for is TILLYFASS (written on the OPR as Tolefass). You can locate Tillyfass to the west, and slightly north of Aberchirder - prob about 5 miles or there abouts - on a line between Aberchirder and the Barry Hill.
Happy Hunting

Hi Bill
I think the link to the map I gave above shows this.

Thanks for all the help folks.
So, have I got this right? Tillyfar is to the east of Aberchirder. Thanks to Gadget's link, I found Tillyfar.
Tillyfass is to the west and slightly north? I can't find it!! ::)
I've been pootling about with the map since I got in 40 mins ago, and I still can't locate the place!! And I think you're right, Bill. Looking at the OPR, it certainly looks as if it could very well be Tillyfass (what a lovely name!) if only I could find it! :-[ :-[

Hi Jill
Can't find it on Multimap but here is Barry Hill:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/016o/
If you move right and down around that area, it should be there ???

Here is the map link - http://www.nls.uk:8080/StyleServer/calcrgn?cat=Maps&item=/74400837.sid&style=maps.xsl&wid=700&hei=500&browser=win_ie&plugin=false# It requires lots of zooming and moving around, but once you find Aberchirder place it to far right centre, and search roughly W by WNW to Barry Hill. It is actually there as North Tillyfass.
Hope this gets you there

Sorry Bill - don't wish to sound ungrateful but I couldn't read anything on that map.
I've decided to accept that it's Tillyfass and that it's obviously in the right neck of the woods and give up trying to actually find it.
Thanks for all your help - and Gadget too.

Found it ;D
Locate Banffshire - pan in to Aberchirder - pan left to find Barr Hill and there it is North Tillyfaff(ss)

Here is a picture of the map - hope it helps

Were you playing Mission Impossible, Gadget? Did you mean it would self destruct in 15 seconds?
??? ??? ;)

Bit concerned about copyright Jill. All maps are subject to it.

Well done Gadget and Bill :)

I couldn't make out what the date on the scan was. The John REIDFORD in it is most definitely in our family tree. Not exactly sure which John he is, with those exact parents. We have several MORISSONs connected to us over the generations since the 1600s.
Also, one of my 4 x great-grandmothers is a Margaret MILNE. She was married to John ROSS. Their daughter Isobel ROSS born 4th October 1809 Forgue Aberdeens, married 20th January 1833 in Marnoch to John REIDFORD born 3rd August 1811 in Marnoch. John died 12th March 1894 at Barmouchy St Andrew's Lhanbryde. Isobel died at Culvie Hill Ordiquhill Banffs on 9th May 1889.
Our first REIDFORDs are found at Corskie Farms Marnoch c1650. I'm in contact via FB with a 2nd cousin of my Mum's (ms REIDFORD) who was born Mary Joss Fyfe REIDFORD in 1968 Banffs.

I see that i the Marnoch gazetteer it says that Knowehead http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NJ5853 is the same as Tillyfaff.
Not strictly correct, because both Knowhead and North Tillyfaff are shown close together on the 1871 Ordnance Survey six-inch map - see http://maps.nls.uk/os/6inch/view/?sid=74426499#sid=74426499&zoom=6&lat=6781.34831&lon=12400.89326&layers=BT - the name Knowhead seems to have migrated from the original farm of that name, which has disappeared, to what was North Tillyfaff.
