Does anyone know which area would have been called Hadfield Town in Chesterfield? My grandfather lived in New St , Hadfield Town at the time of his marriage in 1929 but I have no idea where that might be. He was born in Chesterfield and after marriage lived in the Tupton area.
Any ideas most welcome

There's a New Street in North Wingfield. That would fit with Tupton.
Hadfield (proper) is near Glossop on the other side of the county; I could not find a New St there, just a New Bank Street. But from what you say it sounds like he was rooted in North east Derbyshire.
Others may be able to help ( a number of us scoured the same area for Woodthorpe the other night). But be warned the Wingfield Local History Site gets hijacked by the nasty Drive Cleaner.

There's a New Street at Grassmoor, again close to Tupton.

Thank you all so much, Grassmoor / Wingfield etc do sound about the right area, I know my great grandfather lived on Sheffield Road and Brunswick St Chesterfield when they moved from N Yorks, before moving to New Street "Hadfield" Town. It is probably a lost nickname for wherever, but thanks alot for taking to the time to come up with ideas.

No, from Ruddington, and prior to that Kinoulton. Sorry :(
-
Now then, I'll throw my stick into the fire :)
This is what I can recall right now but I can't swear on it right now.
I believe I came upon this once & - if I remember right - Hadfield Town is the area at the bottom of Park Road, Boythorpe. It the houses at the flat bottom of Park Rd. - someone named Hadfield built them???
-
Thanks for that, will investigate to see if there is a New Street. Cheers

If the area in question is Hadfield town, then new St is still there

Hi, it's me, from the other 'Bowler' family. I tracked it down whilst doing my Maternal side; even the Local Studies Dept. didn't know where it was.
One piece of evidence I have:
From the books of Chesterfield photographs compiled by Roy Thompson. "John Henry Waterhouse was a professional photographer who lived in Hadfield Town by the Queen's Park".
"Baden Powell Road curves down from the bottom [of the picture] and, as Park Road, passes Hadfield town next to the Queen's Park".
The Queen's Park is at the top. Park Road runs left to right. Hadfield town are the houses which come off Park Road.
The photo was c1939.

I was born in Hadfield Town many years ago. It is next to the The Queens Park.I'm not sure of the origins of the name unless it was connected to Hadfield butchers? The properties were built in 1897 (there is a Year plaque on the end of Park Road nearest the Queens Park gates) and comprises Elton Street, New Street and Park Road.
The area still exists but hasn't changed that much.I have a photograph taken in the Edwardian period showing the Hadfield Tea rooms, which was Watkinson's newsagents and sweetshop when I was a kid (1960's)and is now a sandwich shop.
Best Regards Lord Walton

Before a sandwich shop it was, for many years a newsagents, owned by Barry & Bridget Owen; I was a paper girl many many years ago now ;D

hadfield town is that area comprising new st, elton st and pond st on the southern side of markham road , chesterfield. probably named after the hadfield family that were local butchers and supplied the town with at least one mayor.my mother was born and raised in the "pond houses " and an aunt lived in "hadfield town " until her death.

My late grandmother lived at the bottom of Park Road. She always said the area used to be known as Hadfield Town. New Street runs along the bottom and Elton at up the back of the terraces

I do know that the area around New st Park Rd Chesterfield was at one time called Hadfield Town because a chap called Hadfield had a lot of business businesses around that area. You could try ringing Local Studies at Chesterfield library.
