Title: Churches in Hendon, Sunderland
Post by: DavidJP on Friday 26 January 07 20:06 GMT (UK)
Hi all,

My 4x Gt Grandfather John Stephenson is shown on the 1851 census in Northumberland as aged 57 and born in Hendon, Durham. I have now found that Hendon is in Sunderland.

My question is this, what church or churches were in the Hendon area in the 1790's?

I have a few possibles for John's Christening from the IGI for the period 1793/94 but not knowing the area at all i am unable to narrow them down!

Hoping that someone can help me with this.

Many thanks in advance.

Regards

David

Hendon was in Bishopwearmouth, so it would be Bishopwearmouth St. Michael and All Angels.
This map shows the parish boundaries http://aesica.dur.ac.uk/pip/singlezoom.asp?img=p1666&ref1=1813
Depending on exactly what was meant by 'Hendon' there is a possibility that it could be Sunderland Parish church Holy Trinity.

Hi Stan

Thanks very much for your reply. Unfortunately rather than helping me to narrow it down, my being unaware that Bishopwearmouth covered this area means that i now have a couple more possibilities for John's christening, but never mind!

Do you know of anywhere online that I could look at at Sunderland Baptisms and Marriages?

Many thanks again.

Regards

David

Hi have you tried Durhamrecords online resources. They have baptisms for Bishopwearmouth up to 1799 and Holy Trinity 1719 -1812. This may assist.
Good luck

You also have St John's Parish church Hendon, St Ignatius Hendon, St Barnabas Hendon that are C/E Only St Ignatius remains today but Sunderland Local Studies dept of the Central library have these records on microfiche. There were also a lot of non-conformist churches around that are no longer present e.g Herrington St Methodist, Cairo St Independendent Methodist to name but two. The local studies dept is very helpful if you contact them by telephone, if they do not have the records they usually know where they are located.

Fourteen years later & I have finally found out the name of John's father! When I started this thread , I knew absolutely nothing about a second marriage for John. This marriage took place in 1858 and named his father as Peter Stephenson, a Tailor by trade.

Stan, would it be possible for you to check those marriage indexes for me now please, for any Peter Stephenson marriages?

Any and all searches that I have done to find any records pertaining to a Peter Stephenson, have so far turned up nothing.

I have also since found that John's death was not registered, however a fellow RootsChatter found a death announcement for him in one of the local papers. John died in 1867 aged 72 years.

Link to that thread here: https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=844561.0

All help as always gratefully received.

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David
