Hi there. My mother-in-law has asked me to trace her and her late husband's ancestry in New Zealand (hubby was adopted by them). We're in Australia.
Below is what is known to me at the present time. And another reminder that I should have checked the IGI at http://www.familysearch.org first because they had data on the CULLETONs there and more info on the LYONS. Details below.
John Newman LYONS born abt 1850 unknown location, died before 1925 (buried Lake Cemetery, West Point, Devonport, New Zealand). He married (1) 3 Oct 1869/1871 to Anastatia FLEMING born abt 1850 unknown location (died bef 1918 in New Zealand) and they had two known children that I can find (probably more). Married 1918 (2) Isabella Catherine MEYRICK born 26 Aug 1873 Christchurch, New Zealand, died 1968 New Zealand.
1.Ellena LYONS born 1871 Pukekohe East, New Zealand, died 7 Apr 1935 at Matariki Private Hospital, Te Awamutu, New Zealand. Religion: Roman Catholic. Buried 8 Apr 1935 Lot 227, Te Awamutu Cemetery, New Zealand. Married 1896 at Napier, New Zealand to John OLIVER born 1857 unknown, died 22 Aug 1943 Auckland, New Zealand, buried 24 Aug 1943 Te Awamutu Cemetery, New Zealand. No other details known.
2.James Thomas LYONS born 1887 New Zealand (source IGI), died 17 Mar 1976 Auckland, New Zealand (going by Probate Record + death date on IGI). Occupation: Master Painter. He married 4 Feb 1925 St Benedicts Church, Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand (source IGI) to Florence Genevieve CULLETON born abt 10 Sep 1894 Helensville, Auckland New Zealand, died abt 1977 New Zealand. Florence CULLETON was the daughter of Peter CULLETON and Annie Elizabeth MARRIOTT. James & Florence LYONS had five children:-
i) Dennis John LYONS born 30 Jan 1926 Grey Lynn, Auckland NZ, died 15 Feb 1930 New Zealand (source IGI).
ii) LIVING male LYONS
iii) LIVING male LYONS
iv) LIVING female LYONS
v) Barry James Joseph LYONS (my father-in-law) born 19 May 1934 Auckland, New Zealand. Married 1961 NZ to LIVING HUGHES. Emigrated to Australia 1969. Died 30 Mar 2003 QLD.
My father-in-law was always told that their family came from Ireland and that they were related to former 10th Prime Minister of Australia, Rt Hon. Joseph Aloysius LYONS who was born 15 Sep 1879 Stanley, Tasmania, Australia to Irish immigrants: Michael Henry LYONS and Ellen CARROLL. However, I am yet to find a connection. This is yet to be proved or disproved.
Hoping someone out there can assist?
Kind regards, Allycat.

Dear Bronwen, Hi there. Thank you sooo much for that information. No, I had none of it whatsoever. My goodness.
A bit extra though, my mother-in-law believes that John Newman LYONS is buried at Lake Cemetery, West Point, Devonport, New Zealand. We still don't know when he died, perhaps before 1925.
Any cemetery details online?
Alison.

Dear Bronwen, Hi there. Just had a look at the cemetery link for which I thank you, then thought 'crikey' it will take a while to go through.
Thanks for Wise's Directory entry. Can you dig up any records for Anastatia FLEMING? At present I have no parents for her.
You will see from my original posting that I filled in quite a few blanks that I had initially. I could have kicked myself because I forgot (groan) to check if there were any records on the IGI. (There were...)
Have a great day.

Ok guys, I've since found SIX more children born to John Newman LYONS and Anastatia FLEMING (also known as Anastasia FLEMING). My mother-in-law found a little piece of paper with faint pencilled notations written by her husband in the '70s.
I'll just post it all again from the beginning:-
It is believed that John Newman LYONS was the brother of Michael Henry LYONS (father of former 10th Prime Minister of Australia, Rt Hon. Joseph Aloysius LYONS who was born 15 Sep 1879 Stanley, Tasmania, Australia to Irish immigrants: Michael Henry LYONS and Ellen CARROLL.)
John Newman LYONS born abt 1850 possibly Ireland, died before 1925 (buried Lake Cemetery, West Point, Devonport, New Zealand). He first married at Tuimata, Auckland NZ on 3 Oct 1869/1871 to Anastatia FLEMING born abt 1850 unknown location (died bef 1918 in New Zealand) and they had eight children. Married 1918 (2) Isabella Catherine MEYRICK born 26 Aug 1873 Christchurch, New Zealand, died 1968 New Zealand.
Eight children of John Newman LYONS and Anastatia FLEMING:-

Married 1896 at Napier, New Zealand to John OLIVER born 1857 unknown, died 22 Aug 1943 Auckland, New Zealand, buried 24 Aug 1943 Te Awamutu Cemetery, New Zealand. No other details known.
2.Mary LYONS born abt 1873 New Zealand, supposedly married groom surname ORR. No other details known.
3.Elizabeth Julia LYONS born abt 1875 New Zealand, married 1912 NZ to Frank CHILLINGWORTH and the couple had three children, two girls and a boy.
4.Margaret LYONS born abt 1877 New Zealand, married 1905 NZ to Albert Victor DYE born 4 May 1879 Auckland NZ.

I have just found this thread about John Newman Lyons. My husband's late grandmother Elwyn Lyons named John Newman Lyons and Annie Fleming as her parents on her marriage certificate. DNA has proved this connection. To date I have found a birth for her. She was born about 1879. Has anyone else found her? Fingers crossed.
-
Oops, not found a death record.
-
Hello,
Who did Elwyn marry? And where?
Added:Although the birth year does not 'marry' up, could this be the lady you are seeking?

Hi villagelass
Wasn't sure from the above ^ whether you had actually found the birth record for Elwyn LYONS ( ... as you've mentioned she was "born about 1879" ??
I couldn't see her birth listed in New Zealand records (although didn't look all that thoroughly).
However, in the Probate file of her first husband Joseph STOCKTON. Elwyn STOCKTON is stated as having been born in "Melbourne, Victoria". [Unfortunately couldn't see her birth registered there either).

Hi villagelass
Just further to the information already given here earlier for Elwyn LYONS (later STOCKTON and SMITH), Elwyn and her late (2nd) husband, James SMITH, are commemorated on the headstone for Elwyn's daughter, Josephine Elwyn MUNRO (died 1939) who was buried at Bromley Cemetery in Christchurch.
If you go to the Billion Graves website > search on " bromley cemetery > christchurch > MUNRO" you can see a photo of the headstone. Added: > The Billion Graves link is also given in the wikipedia info posted at Reply No. 10 here (although you may need to register to access it ? )
It does appear from their funeral notices that both Elwyn SMITH and her husband James Corbett SMITH (died May 1950), were both cremated.
However this link to Bromley Cemetery > tends to suggest that each of their ashes were interred there, some weeks after the dates of their respective deaths.

Hi villagelass
The Bromley Cemetery records for Block # 10 (No. 3324 - which may refer to an earlier version of plot number ?) show ... "Josephine Elwyn, wife of Thomas MUNRO d. 11 January 1939, aged 27 years. Also, her parents James C. * and Elwyn SMITH - died 19 August 1950 and 9 June 1951" :
Bracketed in the records with the above, is No. 3325 (- although it doesn't show up as a separate plot) ... and this simply records the name "Joe." [There is no date, no surname, or other identification. ]
Possibly it is meant as a memorial to Joseph STOCKTON (d. May 1918) ???
Joseph STOCKTON's actual burial appears to have been at St. John's Churchyard in Wakefield (near to Nelson) ?
Funeral Notice for Joseph >
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/TC19180525.2.23.3
[My note : The dates of death underlined above, may not be strictly correct ??? - they seem to differ from newspaper reports and the cemetery summary of deaths shown in previous post. ]
* James C. SMITH was, strictly speaking, the step-father of Josephine Elwyn MUNRO (she married as STOCKTON in 1935).
~ Lu
Added : Findagrave (NZ) has a photo of headstone for Joseph STOCKTON (very difficult to read ) ... but a transcription of same reads ... "Joseph Stockton who died at Belgrove 25-5-1918, 48 years. " :

Thank you Lu and Minniehaha for all the information you have provided. Amazing in a short time, very much appreciated. My error, we do not know Elwyn's birth-date, have searched here in NZ and Melbourne to no avail.
We know about Elwyn's life from marriage on wards and that of her daughter Josephine Elwyn Stockton. The JOE on the grave is for Josephine, this was the name she was known by. She died a few months following her son's death. Her husband Thomas Munro was a WW2 bomber pilot who lost his life and is buried in the C.W.W.G. section in the Ipswich cemetery in England; we have visited the cemetery.
Unfortunately Joseph Stockton's headstone was ruined by a groundsman who ran his whipper - sniper over it. We had visited the day before and commented we would return for more photos the following day. Nearly wept when we saw how he "cleaned it, for us." Thankfully we have good photos taken before hand. Joseph's life we have, thanks to papers-past and English folk.
The sale notice for Elwyn's house made interesting ready. My husband was always told that the grandfather clock promised to him by his grandmother, never left the house. Not in the sale, nor her crystal and good china.
The mystery remains where was Elwyn (known as Nell) born. The family who have appeared with the DNA match are all born in NZ. The children belonging to John Newman Lyons and Anastasia Fleming. No ancestry family has Elwyn on their tree. At the time of her marriage, she as a barmaid in a Nelson Hotel. Doubt Anastasia would have popped over Melbourne, for a birth when she had other children in NZ.
Many thanks again.
