Title: Help!! No idea where in Australia
Post by: erika on Tuesday 23 January 07 22:50 GMT (UK)
Hi everyone

Tracing hubby's family and found that one of his aunts emigrated to Australia during WW1 and married there.

She was Winifred Lottie Graves born 1897 in Walthamstow area of London.  I think she married someone called ??? Jorgensen. Possible she had a few daughters subsequently.

Would be really grateful for some assistance.

Many thanks
Erika :)

HI,
I had a  quick look for you on the NSW Births Death and Marriages site:
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm

But was unable to find a refrences for a Graves marrying a Jorgenson or for children born to Winifred Jorgenson but it might be worth a try using different spellings.
Cheers,
Elderberry

Hi

On the Victorian BDM website - free to search but pay to view - there is a Winifred Graves marriage to a Jorgensen.  I only searched, didn't view so not sure if it is your Winifred.

http://online.justice.vic.gov.au/servlet/bdm_hom

Some rootschatter may have the information on disk.

Cheers
cando

Edit - the Victorian BDM website has been updated and the new url is v v long [I did read how to deal with long url's but have forgotten :- ]  Have a look at the Victorian Genealogy links at the top of this board and you should find the address there.

Karl Bertram died 1974, age 71 Father Karl John mother Laura Tucker Place Oakl Ref 23333
Cannot instantly see a death for Winifred - the CD goes to 1986. (but I am well known for missing spelling/transcription errors - someone else may find her).

A death certificate for Karl (if the right person) should list all the children. You can download them online at the site given by Cando.

And Karl Bertram was born in Australia - same parents
Carlton 1903 - but the reference is  4577x1935 - so perhaps he found it wasn't registered when he went to register a child?

Trish

Parents marriage
Karl Johan Jorgensen born Norway  married Laura Tucker born NZ  1903 ref 1320

Don't we just know from experience Trish, how determined some of those old buggers were to do their bit.
Fibbing and fumbling to get into the forces to defend the right!!

Yes, Trish, that is quite likely I suppose.
The ship Levuka was a steamer built in 1910 in Glasgow
It seems to have been named after Levuka Fiji. so it possibly viited the South SEas en route.

hello

the  Port code doesn't  mean  country  of  origin

as  per  provic  source  it  says

Quote
The Port code (B, F or N) indicates which series of microfiche to look at and does not necessarily indicate the passengers' nationality.

Far as I know Jenn, F means Foreign port, B British and N New Zealand - where the boat came from - not where the passengers were born. If the lass came from England, one would have thought B for British Port - but if she had a stopover in Asia - F would be the one  :)

I could be corrected - I often get it wrong

The codes may very well mean both series and home port.
with the categories coded using the point of origin for ease and common-sense
