Hello
I am looking for birth information for Gordon MCDOWELL. Potentially born in Raloo parish in abt. 1848.
His parents were a Robert MCDOWELL and Jean, also maiden name MCDOWELL.
IRobert MCDOWELLs are listed in the Griffiths for Raloo in Ballyryland, Ballywillin and Carneal townlands in that parish. I would like to identify if any of these was the Father of my Gordon, who emigrated to New Zealand in about 1870.
Many thanks
KESTON RUXTON.

I have looked through what McDowell's I have ,and cannot find anything yet for you.
Maybe if someone has a Raloo grave book/micro they might be able to look.
sorry Steve

Hi Steve
Many thanks for your help on this.
He is not likely to be in the grave book, but his parents Robert and Jean McDowell may be. Other family names I think would be Gordon and Andrew.
Many thanks

also daughter Nancy d. 1860 aged 4mnths, beloved wife Jane Mcdowell d. 11/04/1861 aged 42. Above named Robert d.16/04/1865, 48 years, son James Mcdowell d. 07/04/1917, 73 years. Mary Jane daughter of above James d. 18/09/1922, aged 41. Mary Barron wife of James d. 10/12/1934 aged 92.

a picture of Raloo grave gate for you, it was very over grown and a bit spooky too.
I had to walk down a VERY long muddy lane to find it.
When people are buried they are taken across the fields
(that is why my Da thought our Stephen was buried at a farm ;D)
My Stephen McDowell is buried just inside the gate (but no headstone)

Hi Steve
I noticed you had Robinson in your family names, I have Robinson and they came from Raloo, some of them did move to Larne in the late 1800's the name Porter also appears in my Lyle family.
I am interested in where your Robinson family came from.
Thank you for the photo's of Raloo graveyard.

oheeeeeeeee...... :o
I have only just found a link to the Lyles, the Robinson , Stevenson, McDowells seem to link into the Lyles as well
Lyles were in Carnmoney and related to Toreagh Raloo Lyles
Robinson's were all Carnmoney from 1600's but as the years went on they moved outwards....with a Robinson living in Raloo in 20thC
The Robinson also did the grave stones of in Carrick (19thC) and others bred and broke horses (traveling as far as Rasharkin) and Publicans

Hi Steve
My Robinson family were in Raloo prior to 1800, the earliest Robinson gravestone in Raloo is for David Robinson b 1683 d. 1765. On the Raloo Tithes for 1669-1771 there are 7 Robinson in Raloo at that time.
William Robinson son of John Robinson of Raloo, William married Elizabeth Jenny Lyle of Browndodd in 1826 she was the daughter of Matthew Lyle and Elizabeth Snoddy.
I think it is there grandson Samuel Robinson that married Mary Ellen Lyle of Toreagh daughter of David Lyle and Matilda McDowell
Other names on the Raloo Tithe 1669-1771 which you might be interested in are James Lyle, Ephraim McDowell, John McDowell and William McDowell.

The tithes in the previous message the date should read 1769-1771

Thank you Helena
yes Samuel seems to be one of mine...trying to work out the links...his wife was a teacher at the Toreagh School and her sisters Martha ,Jenny ,and Lizzie are related through marriage........
Thank you
Steve

If Samuel is one of yours and if he is the Grandson of William and Elizabeth, then he would be the son of Samuel Robinson and Annie Martin my 2nd great grand parents.
I have Samuel and Mary Ellen Lyle with one son John Lyle Robinson b.28/08/1890. I will look back through my records to see what I can find.
Let me know if you find anything that connects as I have a lot of information going back further.

Hi,
My McDowell line is with Margaret. She was born in 1850 to parents Robert and Jane McDowell in Gleno/Raloo, Antrim.
She married Alexander Townsend in May 1870 (Raloo Presbyterian). The witnesses were Jane McDowell and Gordon McDowell. Alexander and Margaret then left Gleno and arrived in New Zealand in Sept 1870.
Alexander and Margaret named one of their sons Gordon (Townsend).
Do you know if your Gordon McDowell had a sister called Margaret? Could Jean be Jane?
-
Hi
This might be your Robert and Jane, Raloo Graveyard
Robert M'Dowell died 21/4/1892 aged 67 wife Jane died 5th May 1898 aged 57 a son Robert is also mentioned
There is also a will index on the Proni site for Robert and Jane for both these death dates you can write to PRONI to get a cost to copy the will for you
In addition to the above there is a Townsend buried Raloo Church of Ireland Graveyard do you have this info

Thanks Helena,
I think (but could be wrong), that's not the Jane and Robert McDowell on my side or the post you did 16/9/07 that mentions Robert and Jane from the Raloo graveyard.
Keston,
From the Raloo Presbytarian Church records, marriage by James Whitford
1842 Feb 26th. Robert McDowell, son of James McDowell and Jane McWilliam of Gleno. to Jane, daughter of John McDowell and Jane McM_____ of Gleno. in the presense of Bryce McMurtry of Ballysnodd and James McDowell of Gleno.
I think your Gordon McDowell who married Sarah Carter is the brother of my gg grandmother Margaret Townsend (McDowell). They both lived and farmed in Maketu (Ramarama). They both came to NZ the same year (1870). Five of their children had the same names: Robert Henry, Gordon, William, Sarah and Eliza.
On Gordon's death cert, his mother is called Jean (but could it be mistaken for Jane, they sound similar in a Northern Irish accent). Jean/Jane was formerly a McDowell, ties in with above marriage record. The only Gordon McDowell I have ever found is the one who was a witness at Margaret and Alexander Townsends marriage. Are they brother and sister?

Hi
I think you could be right!! This is very exciting. I am at work at the moment but will send more this evening.
This is the last line I need to find and it is quite a break through. I have actually been to Raloo and the PRONI and couldn't make a confirmed connection.
I am sure you are right. I need to go into a meeting but I will be in touch soon.

Hello,
I am also researching my gggggrandfather GORDON MCDOWELL, born in ANTRIM. Married SARAH CARTER, at her mother's home (Jane Carter) in Parnell, Auckland, New Zealand 1877.
Any information you can provide concerning the Irish part of the family would be gratefully received.

Hi
I am descended from Robert Henry (jun.)'s brother Norman Percival, born 1907, I think currently in Ramaram, but it could have been Birkenhead as well.
My Mother is *, daughter of Norman Percival and Victoria Anderton.
We are second cousins. Randomly, I think my Mother and Uncle visited your aunt? Dawn in Havelock North last week to say hello.
I have more information on the family. Gordon came from Gleno or the parish of Raloo in Antrim as you indicate. Sarah was born in Parnell , Auckland.
I will try to message you my email address.
Thanks
KESTON.

Hello,
Was Robert Henry (Jun) married to Lizzie Bell from Drummully, Co. Fermanagh in Ireland?
If so I have a photograph that may be them.

Yes. She arrived in 1880 with her parents.
I would be very interested to see the photo. Has it come down through your side of the family?
