Hello,
I am having a lot of trouble locating marriages, births etc for Jews (esp. in London).
In the 1841 Census I have found my great x 5 grandfather Abraham BRAHAM and his wife, Hannah in St George The Martyr. He is an artist born around 1791 outside of Middlesex. His wife Hannah is born in 1786 outside of Middlesex as well and dies in 1856.
I would really like to find their marriage and get some clue as to what her surname was or parents but I am not holding out much hope as I have tried almost every resource on the internet without any luck.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. :)

Hi honey-roma88
I can't answer your question I'm afraid and you've probably tried all of these but I'll post them anyway in case you haven't !! :) ..... you say he was an artist in the 1841 census and Hannah died in 1856 .... were you able to get her death certificate ? did they have any children ? if you could get birth certificates .... it would give Hannah's maiden name !! do you have any family stories ... sometimes theres an element of truth that may give you a clue !
Tell us what you know and where you've looked before and lets see if somebody can help you !!

Thank you ever so much for that. There are a couple I haven't tried there so that's great to have somewhere else to look.
Cheers :)
-
They had quite a few children all born in Chelsea I think.
Nathaniel Henry (1823)
Esther (1826)
Eliza (1829)
Rosa (1831)
William (1833)
Edwin (1835)
Benjamin (1829)
There may be others. Hannah died in 1866 - I got that bit wrong, sorry. Abraham was also called John in the census.
-
Which census do you have already honey-roma88 ?..... just to save us going over old ground .... as it were !! :) :)
-
Sorry - not very good at this am I. ;D
I have Abraham and Hannah on the 1861 and 1841 census - I'm having a bit of trouble locating them on the 1851 census. I don't know when Abraham dies so he may be on later census'.
Thank you for helping me. :)

Hi , you can write to the Synagogue in North Finchley, they will do a comprehensive search for a marriage but there is a charge, mine cost £15.00 a few years ago. Let me know if you want the information.

Hi, Can we have ref. for 1841 &1861 census. Does the 1861 census give place of birth?

Thank you everyone who has answered this. Thank you patrish - I will look into that tomorrow.
Unfortunately it just says that Hannah and Abraham were born in Middlesex, England in 1861 and bizarrely both say that they weren't born in Middlesex in 1841. ::)
I don't know where to find the reference for 1861 :-[ - It's in Lambeth, Waterloo Road Second: John (70) and Hannah Braham (64) with their son Benjamin Braham (32) and a Thomas Jones (27). Sorry.
-
I found Benjamin in 1851 !!
1851
31 Francis Place St George Southwark
Benjamin Braham 28 Head Middlesex Engraver
Mary Ann Braham 20 wife
William Braham 18 relative
Edwin Braham 16 relative
William Barham 3 Mo son
Emma Corvin 16 servant
George Long 23 relative

Dates are a little off but don't forget the 5 year rule in 1841 !! ::)
-
I'm getting a little confused with your dates I think ........... ???
Where did you get the birthdates for Abraham and Hannah and the children you listed Roma ? did you have them before you looked for census ? it's possible also they may have come here from another country .... have you checked into that angle at all ?
Annie :)
-
Sorry about the dates - that's definitely my fault. They dates may have been got from the 1841 Census so may be very off, it may also be my appalling maths skills. ;D Hannah was almost certainly born in 1796 though as I have found her grave stone and it says she dies age 70 in 1866.
They may well have come over from another country. They were Sephardic Jews - I know that.
That is defintely the right Benjamin and that Edwin and William are his brothers. :D Thank you very much for that.
-
Where was Hannah buried ? In London ? does it say anything on the gravestone that may give you a clue ?? :-\

I have Hannah Moses marrying Abraham Braham on 22 Feb 1874 at Lambeth, Surrey. I have Abraham's parents also, and their descendants to my wife via their granddaughter Grace Ruth (mentioned in the census).

Sorry I didn't see your posting earlier.
The transcripts of the marriage records of the Great Synagogue record the following. Names in italics are translierated from Hebrew.
2 August 1812
Abraham Braham - son of Nathan Papea
Hannah Moses (Hendela d/o of Ya'acov Bramedsham)
23 May 1799
Nathaniel Braham - son of Abraham Pepea
Lidia Barnet (Leah d/o Baruch)
Hannah possibly had a sister, Rosetta (Raze) who married Goodman Abraham (Peretz s/o Behr Barber) in 1801
Abraham may have had an older brother called Moses Nathan (Mosheh s/o Nathan Papea) who married Silah Moses (Sarah d/o Yitschak Bramedsham) on 21 April 1803.

I entered the marriage of Abraham Braham and Hannah Moses from the wrong field in my database when I gave it as 22 Feb 1874. I do have their marriage as 2 Aug 1812.
However, I don't see how Nathaniel Braham and Lidia Barnett could have been married in 1799 since Abraham was born in 1791. Should it be 1789?
-
You could be right that it should read 1789. The transliterated surnames of the fathers are possibly incorrect too. You can read what the editor had to say here. Old cursive Hebrew can be very difficult to decipher.

However, after reading a few pages of Todd Endelman's The Jews of Georgian England 1714-1830 on google books, I think anything was possible!
