Title: Porter, McIntyre,McMillan
Post by: Mackiwi on Sunday 21 January 07 00:09 GMT (UK)
Hi everyone,
Just wondering if there are any descendants of George Porter & Robina Henderson from Mauchline,Ayr, Stratton.
They were married around 1851 and George was an Innkeeper/ Spirit Dealer.
They had 9 children Agnes,David,Jane,Margaret,Mary,Sarah,William, John, George.
Agnes married Lachlan McIntyre, then William Downs McMillan in 1903 after Lachlan passed away in 1898.

Hi J.J.

Thank you for all of that, certainly looks like our family.
Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you, sometimes my world goes crazy, and it doesn't help when the computer joins in.
I see you have found 11 births for Robina and George, I only have 9 so far. More digging needed.

Cheers

Just in case you did not know George Porter, and his wife Robina Henderson, went to Canada, about 1852. where three of there earlier children were born,
John Porter, born about 1853. Canada,
Janet Porter, born about 1855. Canada.
James Porter, born about 1857. Canada.

They had taken there first born George Porter, born about 1851. with them. they returned to Ayr. Scotland. between 1857 and 1861.

I think in total they had 13 children.

Regards,
Jonn.

Thank you jonn, I now have 13, but........ now have to figure out if they had 14. As there was a daughter Jessie b. in Canada about 1855!!!!!!!! A twin for Janet ?? or was Janets real name Jessie.  :) :)
She married as Jessie to Hugh Train, they took over The Thistle Inn in Mauchline soon after George died.

And so the puzzle continues.

I see what you mean JJ, but I would have thought that even back then the name on their marriage  certificate would have to be the same as birth registration.  :-\

Not at all....we often identify nicknames used by finding a match for the parent's names...
Several great aunts used middle names on documents and censuses. Fun, huh?
But yeah, duplication of names can still occur, so you'll have to rule that out anyway...  ;D  J.J.

All adds to the challenge of finding the correct people  :) :)

Hello Mackiwi,

Janet, Jessie, are interchangeable in Scotland, there is no other child with the name Jessie, or starting with the letter J. in Ayrshire, that was born in Canada, called Porter, and none with the family.

Remember also the mother Robina, was actually born Jacobina, and she never used that name except in one census, she also died with the name Robina.

Regards,
Jonn.

Aha, Thank you jonn, I thought I would have to accept the Janet/Jessie one, but..... never would have picked Robina/Jacobina. Do you know which census?

Mackiwi :)

Hello Mackiwi,

The 1841. census for Sorn, Ayr. did you know her father was married twice.

You are full of surprises tonight. :)

After I posted I guessed it might be 1841. Then I discovered who her parents were and that she had a sister.

Now you tell me her father was married twice, well we can't leave it there.....please tell me. :) :)

Hello Mackiwi,

Jacobina's, parents were Robert Henderson, and Margaret Rice, they married 11/Nov/1831. Sorn, Ayr.

They had two kids Jacobina, and Janet.

Robert Henderson, then married Jean Johnston, 25/Jan/1839. Sorn, Ayr.

On the 1841. census ages were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest five. ie Robert Henderson, looks to be very young to have a 9 year old daughter. However it is the correct family.

Regards,
Jonn.

Hi all
Descendants of George and Robina Porter from Mauchline, Ayr, Scotland

I have just started researching the porter family, and am now quite excited at finding someone who seems to have some information about them going to Canada.  Any knowledge would be most helpful i.e. where in Canada was John Porter born?  He married Elizabeth Clelland on 1st Oct 1875, Clelland Park, Mauchline, and then married a Mary McQueen.

Hi & welcome to the family
Is it John Porter 1853 that you are interested in? If so he was born in Canada? After many years of searching I have only recently found one other person looking at the Porter family. I will flick him an email to read your posting and perhaps between the 3 of us we can put the family together.

:D
Wonderful news.  I have just started researching this branch of my family.
I recently spent a couple of days at the new Burns Centre in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire looking up the Porter Family and obtaining John P's death certificate, but only got as far back as George and Robina.

Look forward to receiving any further information especially about their life in Canada.

Now very excited!!!!

Hi,

I have been working on the Porter's for ages now..... I'm married to one :)  My Wife's (Great x2) Grandparents were George and Robina and her Great Grandfather was William, which was John Porter's brother.  I've done a lot of work on the whole family and I have a lot of information but unfortunately I couldn't find much on the birth in Canada.

Wow - I think we are the same generation line, and your wife and I are cousins!!!

George was my great great grandfather.  My great grandfather was John Porter and his daughter Margaret Porter married John Woodburn - my grandfather.

My sister's middle name is Rubina - and we have always thought they had mixed 2 aunts names together (Ruby & Bina), however they may have also used Robina's name aswell.

Looking forward to seeing the connections

Sorry I can't help with Canada just yet. What we have gathered does not show why they went to Canada or how George was employed.
They went to Ontario,Canada 1851 or 52 ? (where George and Robina married certificate not found yet)and returned to Sorn by May 1859.
My connection is through Agnes, daughter of George and Robina. She was married to Lachlan Macintyre from 1893 to 1898 when he passed away, there were no children of this marriage.
1903 she married William Downs McMillan.

Lots of new information coming online all the time, so we live in hope.

I know that Robina travelled with George's sister to New York during August 1852.  I couldn't find a marriage certificate for them but I believe that they were married on 4th August 1853 in New Jersey, USA.

I am a McIntyre, but not in your family tree (as yet).
Just wanted to point out about middle and surnames being transposed.
I spent a lot of time and money looking for my gt gt grandfather, William McGregor McIntyre only to find out, 18 months later, that he was actually born William McIntyre McGregor and took his father`s surname when he married (being born illegitimate).
It was a great relief, in a way, to be able to carry on my research.
