Title: Beurle in Chatham, Kent 1841/51/61 look up please
Post by: Sorcha on Saturday 20 November 04 08:25 GMT (UK)
Hi,

Have just discovered theat my great, great, great grandmother is Susannah Elizabeth Beurle, born Chatham, Kent around 1847. I know absolutely nothing about this woman apart from who she married (Alfred Birch, from Birmingham) and the children she had. This is her on the 1881 census in Liverpool:

6 East View, Liverpool, Lancs

RG11/3632 folio 23 page 40

Alfred BIRCH  Head  38  Glazier b. Birmingham
Elizabeth wife 34 b.Chatham
Alfred son 16 b.Birmingham
Ada dau 14 b.Birmingham
Clara dau 11 b.Birmingham
John son 7 b.Birmingham
Joseph son 5 b.Birmingham
Elizabeth dau 3 b.Birmingham
William son 3m b.Liverpool

She is known as Elizabeth instead of Susanna Elizabeth here.

I would be grateful if anybody can locate anything about her or the family in the Chatham area. I'm hoping that Beurle, and its various spellings will be quite a rare name and that they might be easy to locate for anyone who has the 1841 and 1851 census for the area.

Many hopeful thanks to you all!

In addition to the above, I have found out that Susannah Elizabeth Beurle's dad was Fidell Beurle.  I also now know that she married in Birmingham in 1863.  I'm hoping with such ar are name as Fidell Beurle somebody somewhere might know something about him, and Susannah!

thanks,

hello
I have had a look at the 1841 for Chatham without any success. You should bear in mind that there is no  name index so you have to look through each page and the writing is appaling in places so it doesn't necessarily mean its not there.
I lived in Chatham all my life up to seven years ago and I have not come across the name Beurle. Perhaps you could try 1837online.com and find the birth cert. Actually i will have a look for you now

Thanks for your help Olias.  The more I learn about this branch of my family the more I suspect there is more than meets the eye.

Do you know whether around the mid 1800's Chatham was  a port or was place where a lot of people from abroad came into England.  I ask this because talking to a very distant old relative, she says about a family story that the Beurle family came across the channel and were left by their father.  I'm now wondering if the Chatham thing is a cover up and that she may have been born elsewhere but came into the UK at Chatham.  I'm not really sure about how immigration worked at those times.  If you can shed any light it would be most useful!

Thanks!

Hello,
There has been a dockyard in Chatham for hundreds of years. It was a Royal Naval yard and probably the most famous sailing ship, HMS Victory, was built there. Obviously in the mid 1800s there would have been hundreds if not thousands of workers employed in the shipbuilding industry.
There is also a large Royal Engineers garrisson and I think I'm right in saying that the Royal Marines were stationed in Chatham. It was always a naval town and I would think that everybody had a strong connection with the dockyard. I dont think that it would have been an embarkation port.
Just a long shot but in Rochester, the next town, there was a Huguenot hospital could the surname be French? :-\

hello again,
I presume you have put Beurle in google. It appears to be German not French

I did put Beurle in Google and it appeared to be German, however, talking with a very old relative who has just got in touch with me, she reckons that the family came across the channel and were dumped by their father, Pedro, who disappeared.  She says the family are definitely from the continent and she reckons there is some sort of Spanish connection, especially as there was another relative, Fidell, anyway, I am sort of getting round to the notion that they have come in off the boat somewhere along the line and that the Chatham thing might be a red herring....there seems to be some evidence further down the line that they might have been a little economical with the truth when it came to official records.....

But I'll keep looking, they must be somewhere!!!!!

Thanks loads for your help!

Hi,

Chatham is way way too big to search without an address. DO you have one from a cert or something?

Kate

Hi Sorcha

It may interest you to know that the parish registers for Chatham are online:

http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/query/results/?Mode=Search&PathList=%2FZ4a_Medway_Ancestors%2F%0A&SearchWords=&DateList

They take quite a while to search but it may be worthwhile.

Best wishes
