Title: Little hanover street Cork 6
Post by: annie1mod on Saturday 20 January 07 15:26 GMT (UK)
I am looking for ancestors of mine that lived in little hanover street, any Cronins or O'connells. I am having trouble locating any info as I dont know if this area of Cork has its own place name or whether its just know as Cork City or Cork Centre......Or what the Parish is. Does anyone know what is this area known as?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Annette

Annie, Pity I didn't see this post last week, when I was in Cork.  I will be going again soon and will look the street up for you. certainly there is a Hanover St in Cork city centre, but I am not sure whether it has a 'little' in front of it.

It might be in a parish area known as 'The Marsh'.  I can't quite remember- will have to look it up.

I remeber where Little Hanover St is now!  When I am away from Cork, it takes a while for the geography to settle again in my mind, especially for those small places.  certainly in the olden days, the parish there would be what was called 'The Marsh'.  It is in an area which used to be marshland and from which type of arae Cork gets its name (from the Gaelic Corcach, meaning a marsh).  Now...I have to try to remember what parish the area would be in now and I wonder if it would be in the parish of SS Peter and Paul's?  I suspect that it would.  'The Marsh' may not have been recognised as a parish as such, because it is more a geographical area than an ecclesiastical entity, so on reflection, SS P + P may be the route to take.  You can look up details of that parish on www.corkandross.org

No prob.  Hope you find out something.  The street is off the Western Road/Washington st area, which then , if you keep on a straight line, heads right into the area straight across from Our Lady's Hospital- the hosptial would be about 40-45 mins mins walk from there, maybe less.
